Seems the SBD-3 got a bad rap as far as performance and stability in a dive as compared to other aircraft designed for the same role.

However my experience with it in the game so far has been one of pleasure and success. Its easy to fly, good maneuverabilty at the right altitude and **** accurate in delivering bombs on target.

Far better experience than with the Ju-87, much easier learning curve.

Just my 2 cents.

Many pilots were not happy when the Helldiver replaced the Dauntless.

Our bomber squadron loves it. Last night they actually had to engage Val's as they had returned to base. They shot down three.

Yes, the USN Divebombers did not have anything nice to say about the Helldiver. called it an unstable monster mostly. The SBD-3 was a respectable bomber. Mechanics really hated the Helldiver.

Some SBD drivers even shot down airplanes--it's maneuverable, and it does have twin .50s in the nose. It was not unheard of early on to send up some SBDs as CAP, but it proved to be way too slow for that.

haha one time i was doing a dive bombing run on a Carrier, and i pulled out low enough to find the planes taking off
so i dove in on it, dropped my bombs, hit the tail and blew up the 3 other planes waiting to take off, and immediatly pulled out of my dive right onto the tail of a zero that had just gotten off the deck, i shot it down and put a fuel tank in flames! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
I love my SBD

Yes, I understand that after tne USN dropped the SBD, the Marines used them to great effect in the Philippines, supporting McArthur's Forces. It's pinpoint accuracy made it the, "right plane at the right time". Similar to the A-1Es in Vietnam.

I do like the dive bombing characteristics of the -3 with it's telescopic sight. Very easy to put 'em in the basket. But I do find it's lack of speed to be a terrible handicap online. Overall I like the D3A1 (Val) much better. It seems to have better overall performence, at least when I fly it.

I guess I'll buck the trend and say that I cannot wait for the Helldiver. Speed baby, speed!

Yeap, the VAl is a beauty.
But 370 lb of payload against 1600....

I´m sure the Dauntless flys a lot faster with onlly 500lbs atacjed to it http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

That was the first version of the Helldiver to reach service BTW. Everyone hadted the original SB2C. However, by 1944 it had all but replaced the Dauntless, had a better range, better speed, the engine reliability was right up there, the firepower had been increased, and most of the teething problems that the plane had with it were ironed out. It was never as manuverable as the Dauntless but it allowed the US carriers to strike further afield than they had before. A major advantage when the Japanese had held that crown for some time...

I have been wondering about the Val's bombload since we got it. Surely the real thing could carry more? And remember that the Val's payload is in kilograms, not pounds. The in game total payload is 815 pounds, which still seems incorrect.

Oh yeah!!! The Dauntless rocks!! Helldiver!! Avenger!!! And of course cant fergit bout the rising suns torp planes!!! ALL FLYABLE!!!

" Each carrier had an airwing.Only 25% of these planes were fighters, which intercepted enemy air strikes and escorted the dive bombers and torpedo bombers on strike missions. The remaining 75% of the air wing were dive bombers and torpedo bombers."
