They are totally overdone. I watched warplanes taking of from a dry grass strip during an airshow..and there was no or just a very small dust cloud! So stop this eyecandy...concentrate on FM, DM and AI performamce !

I think they are great. Leave them in.

Especially on tarmac.

Anything else the developers can do for you ? Just ask I'm sure they will go away and pamper to your needs.

Are they overdone? Yeah a little but so are the muzzle flashes.

I still like them both. If I want to see realistic muzzle flashed I'll go shoot my 8mm Mauser from 1944. Or my M-44 from 1943.

Truely heres the deal though in order to make the muzzle flashes look cool at night they have to be big. So rather than make then have two flashes one for daylight, and one for darkness or in dim light. They just made them bright.

I think also the dust clouds serve multiple purposes. One is they look cool. Two is they tell you when the aircraft in front of you is beginning their takeoff run.

It also makes it easier for bombers, and vulchers to see you taking off. Of course you can actually see better in real life.

I agree with throt, but i think this effect must be removed from pavimented airfields. It's just unrealistic watch that earth smokem behind the aircraft while you're taxing over a cemented area...

Perhaps in a dry, sandy soiled summer field its accurate - but I agree with the first post: I'd ike the dust toned down a lot or got rid off completey.

I love the dust clouds and I don't really care that they appear over concrete. It may just be too hard to treat the little patches of concrete as a seperate zone and make the dust disappear over it.

The one thing I would like to see is some kind of culling applied to the dust and explosion effects - similar to model LOD. I don't know how much of a stretch it would be in the IL2FB engine, but from reading I don't believe it would be too hard to stop drawing transparent dust or explosion effects if the framerate drops below a certain number. With clouds, early morning fog, dust effects and smoke from crashed planes going, that's an awful lot of transparent textures to draw - enough to tax a Geforce 4 under heavy conditions. Certainly most recent games incorpoate such auto-detail/fps level features.

The only thing I don't like about the dust clouds is the dirt and grit get between my teeh everytime I fly an I-16 or a I-153.

Leave 'em in. They're useful to see if someone's taking off in front of you, and I don't get a fps drop with them.
Cheers!
P.S. Nobody ever whined about the dust from vehicles. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Every once in a while, I want to see something pretty. The dust is pretty. . . . And I like having the help in FR so that I know when to takeoff.

Don't touch the dust! Please! I love it!

As for the dust on the concrete run- and taxiways, well, I guess somebody has been slacking off in keeping them clean. And if any CO finds the one responsible, then that one will be in real big trouble. /i/smilies/16x16_robot-happy.gif

with the dust cloud u might as well put icons on as well, cause it makes treetop level flying null and void now, i used to have a chance to get in <50m and hit a target or run away but not now

The dust comes up when your really low, just stay a few meters above the ground and your fine.

At the risk of sounding sarcastic (who me?) could you not fly just a little higher. The dust/spray trails only appear at heights above ground of 5m or less. What's wrong with a 10m alt for low level attacks?

U mean u can fly ant 10m and not 5m? shocked!!!, but its not as fun, yes FUN! i find it easier to keep ultra low than 15m or so, if im not on the deck i tend to drift up) i can out fly most at almost zero altitude, and its fun to drop bombs at low level with a 1-2 sec delay, if it dont kill your attaker it cautions them http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

The difference is that dust, while not being a constant effect in RL, is a natural real world phenomenon. Icons are not.

I'll admit that always having dust on every surface may be a bit over-done, but I kinda like it. It also helps when you're flying bomber escort and your squad takes off first. You can then see easily from the air when the bombers are rolling and when they're all up.

I can't believe that no-one has mentioned this :

Turn on rainy weather. Then takeoff on a grass AF. Hmmm ... dust clouds. Errr ... shouldn't the dust be ... ummm ... gone? Or maybe that's mud I see flying in the air /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Dust MAKES FORMATION (sorry i had to shout lol) takeoffs vearly imposible even if your using external veiws in some cases. So how about we get an option to turn them off, or even an option to just limit them from the air feilds?
