Used to see lots of them... People used to wave at them from the mountain as they passed by http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

South Africa was confident that it would be used €œprofessionally, efficiently and effectively,€
We'll wait and see....

Lekota later told AFP the vessel would be €œfar (more) effective in policing criminal syndicates than we could ever do (before).€

This guy's a joke. there was a stink about purchasing these when the money could be more effectively used "combating Internal corruption".

They're porbably nice subs (I'll go have a look), but what are they really going to do... Torpedo... quote: "the americans that are going to attack us" unquote.

Are they going to have raiding parties on board http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif that are going to ambush illegal fishing vessels http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif

Man the mind boggles...

Yep, we send some over in ww-2 http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Now seriously, im not sure. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

I believe they already had some class 206 u-boats but.....im not sure anymore http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif

what can tis Frigate do? it doesn't have any visible weaponry. maybe some missile silos?

and what is the purpose of frigates at all?

That photo was made by its manufacturer and it wasnt armed yet. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

I believe this one (dont know the class) was made for an foreign country. Maybe south Africa , Greek, Norway...dont know.

EDIT : Its the Isandlwana "F 146" an stealth corvette not an frigate. My fault http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Sold to the South African Navy in 2003

An frigate is a bit bigger than an corvette and has more weapons and greater range.

Here is another one of an frigate (Sachsen class) already in service.

http://img230.imageshack.us/img230/9592/sachsen20002640x4265ek.jpg

It has stealth capability and gives an radar reflection of an small motor boat or similar. On older radar systems it isnt visible at all.

Frigates have many purposes : Sub hunt, patrol, guard other ships, recon, combat with other ships.

I dont know what weapons the SA Navy mounted on that corvette. We deliver only the ship but not the weapons.

Here is the weapon list of the Sachsen class :

1x 76 mm OTO-Melara cannon

2x 27 mm Rheinmetall cannon

1x Vertical Launch System (VLS) with 32 missile slots for ESSM and SM2-IIIA

8x ship to ship - missile HARPOON

2x RAM (Rolling Airframe Missile) 21 slots

6x Torpedo launchers MU90

2 Helicopters SEA LYNX Mk 88

2x 27mm cannon

2x RAM (Rolling airframe missile)

2x Decoy launcher TKWA / MASS

unknown amount of mines

heavy ship to ship missile RBS 15MK3

no information on the amount and type of helicopters avaible.

In 2000 I asked some SA government officials why they needed U-Boats then on order. What enemy threatened SA in a manner U-Boats would practically aid in the national defense.
They had no answer.
Unless they picked up a 206 used since then they did not have any U-Boats. I had taken a couple slides of their tired old Subs but they are buried somewhere.
I call their U-Boats Magpie items. Some people are just enthralled with shinny neat toys and find ways to insist they must have them.
There are no military powers any where near SA that U-Boats would aid in the defense of the nation. Any enemy for which they could be effective would either be so far away that they would never have a reason to be engaged or the few would be so powerful on the sea as these would not be an effective defense and none of those have ever exhibited any hostility toward SA nor is there anything to suggest it is remotely possible they would.
If you had spoken with these officials you would see the magpie class is the only reasonable explanation.

You don't want to speak to these officials. Place them next to a slug, and the slug wins on intelligence every time... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

A local arms manufacturer will be arming our frigates, so weapons were not included in the contract.

Lekota .....this guy's a joke.
Watch it Bluejack, we know who you really are and where you live. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/shady.gif We're about to arrest a dissident named vanjast, you don't want that to happen to you too do you? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/784.gif

Sorry DD, I'm on a roll here..

Now, this will be interesting... I'm at a loss as to what local weapons we're going to put on here... maybe a dining room table with an external marquee for party members only http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

And I've just seen the helideck... one or 2 puma's an Airforce do not make, I'm afraid. We're running really low on suitable choppers for this ship.

Another point is the length of the ship, it's not much bigger than the Strike craft we got from Israel, which were wholey unsuited for these local conditions. As these ships passed Cape Point they spent more time 'under water' than on top. We looking at the same situation again. If so it's not much point putting a weapons system on board. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/bigtears.gif

Are you inferring the water conditions at the Cape of Good Hope are not the same as the Mediterranean?

No one would believe that!!!

Unless, of course, they have actually considered it!

I'm afraid that the leaders in South Africa are now the same as the leaders in most of the other African countries, wanting the shiny toys to look good to their peers.

@ wulfy:- Yes, my cousin was a weapons operator on the strike craft in the early 80's and he commented how they had to literally 'seal off' all hatches when hitting medium size swells. Even targeting became a problem. The strike craft was of such a length that a medium swells upwards (standard seas down here) the ships bow spent more time trying to crash dive like a sub.

That new destroyer/ship that we have, although stands higher out of the water, looks to be a bout 30-50% longer than the strike craft. I think that it would probably 'bob' around like a cork in similar seas. This might prove difficult for a weapons system.

@K61:- there already has been a corruption scandal about local weapons system manufacturers with our navy ships. Political leaders tried to cover this up, but had to let go as it became world wide news. These 'leaders' are only in it for the $$$ in their back pockets, like most of Africa. When real people tell them they crooks and ignorant... well!!, the 'Robert Mugabe's' comes out of them.

As I always say.. Name one country in Africa that has a decent track record.... silence.
