Yes, I know it's not IL2, but for those with FSX, this is a must have. Flies like a dream and looks fantastico.

My own Comp can´t handle FSX, but I´ve had the chance to try this baby at a friends place who bought almost everything out of Shockwaves shop, and I was very impressed by the flight model. O.o

The only things that put me off are the lack of a fully modeled interior.
Considering that the Samdim Design TU-144 (which is much much larger than the B-17) has a fully modeled passenger cabin and cockpit, I would have expected something similar for a payware product like this, and FSX´s absence of a realistic damage model makes flying by the book redundant, as you can run the engines on war emergency power endlessly on the ground with cowl flaps closed and having the cylinder head temp scratch the 500 degrees mark for hours, and then still take off normally and experience not even the slightest loss in engine power or any other signs of damage.

Flight model wise awesome, but for lack of interior and the engine limitations of FSX, not worth it for me... but maybe I´m just expecting too much. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

What's the bomb load like?

Since we are never going to see aircraft like this in IL-2, I say roll on BOB, and I have been so glad for FS9/X which have allowed me to fly Skuas, Battles, Whitleys, B-36s, Victors, Vulcans, B-58s, and the list is endless. Thankfully, with BOB, we may be seeing Shockwave's talent being applied to combat models. Their models for FSX, like this B-17G, are incredible. Glad for all of them.

No. But you can with the CFS-3 version of this model.

Shockwave first released their B-17s in FirePower for CFS-3, and then ported the model over to FS9. More recently they improved it for FSX.

FS versions only have the cockpit as an interior view. The FirePower versions have the nose, waist, and tail guns as well as the upper and ball turrets, and all the MGs are operable. None of the versions have a representation of a Norden bombsight; FirePower uses the default CFS-3 crosshair.

Shockwave used their talents to update "Rowen's Battle of Britain," which was released a couple of years ago as "Battle of Britain II: Wings of Victory." Shockwave is currently developing a Flying Tigers sim based on their BoB2:WoV engine. They are not at all associated with Oleg's upcoming "Storm of War" series, which Oleg will debut with his own interpretation of The Battle of Britain.

So if I have CFS3[which I do,it's been a drink coaster for the last 5 yrs http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif]I can download/purchase WoP and fly a fully functional/gunner/bomber positions,B-17?

No. Wings of Power planes only work in FS9 or FSX.

If you want the flyable B-17 with working machine guns and falling bombs, you need to get a copy of FirePower for CFS-3. But the good news is that Shockwave has a DVD pack that has both "Wings of Power: Heavy Bombers and Jets" for FS9 and FSX (it has B-17F, B-17G, B-24, B-29, Lancaster, Arado, He-129, Ta-183, I think the Ta-152, maybe some others) and "FirePower" for CFS-3 (all the above planes as combat ready plus at least as many more additional).

The DVD is titled "<span class="ev_code_RED">Aircraft Power Pack</span>" and costs about $30. As a bonus, you also get on the same DVD: Shockwave's new version of their P-51D for FS9/FSX, and their original FS9 Mustang converted for use CFS-3.

$30 is a bargain for all the planes you get, and those bonus Mustangs certainly sweeten the deal. Go ahead and see what Shockwave is charging for the download version of the B-17 or the P-51D and you'll be convinced. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Shockwave's Online Store -- see the Solo Online series (http://www.shockwaveproductions.com/store/)

Edit: I just want to add that Aircraft Power Pack can be found at places like Best Buy and GameStop, so no need to pay the extra $8 shipping by going through Shockwave.

The CFS-3 Mustang on APP is a brilliant failure, IMO. The quality of the cockpit is excellent, and the plane itself is a lot of fun to fly. On the other hand, they forgot to give the plane brakes and the patch they released later had the wrong .air file so it is unusable. I don't know if Shockwave has ever fixed the bonus Mustang for CFS-3.

They thinkered with the WOPII Mustang for several months, however, and used their first Mustang as the test bed for the FM before releasing the updated 3D model on the "WWII Fighters Special Edition" retail CD. It works like a champ right off the DVD. The WOPII P-51D's inclusion on APP is unadvertised and put there as a surprise. Or maybe as an accident ... who knows anymore with Shockwave.

My favorite Shockwave release is still their P-47 download for FS9. But I'm a Thunderbolt fan through and through.

MAW to be released June 10. (http://www.medairwar.com/) It's a huge, free mod for CFS-3. The website for it is worth a look.

One, of course, can speculate that Shockwave's talent for producing add-ons for FS9/X may be transferred to Oleg's BOB since outside sources can make models for it.

"Wings of Power: Heavy Bombers and Jets"

These are however not by far of the same quality as the new B-17 from shockwave. Especially in the cockpit texture department.

If you think the download version is worth a full $32, go for it. I had the original Heavy Bombers and Jets for FS9 and then I got the Aircraft Power Pack later which has FSX compatible versions of the same planes.

Here are a couple screens I made with the original Heavy Bombers and Jets in FS9, before I got APP:

When I installed Aircraft Power Pack (into FS9; I don't have FSX), I noticed right away that Shockwave had corrected the 'munchkin' pilots from the original version. Anyhow, I'm content with the version I have.
