Hi gents,

I got a little over excited with my new machine (see sig) and thought I could tune up '46 with all the advanced stuff like the new shader special effects and detailed water.

In dogfights, QMB and Online missions I can set the settings to what I want and I still get acceptable performance, but if I try to start a campaign (especially DCG missions) the framerate drops below 10!

What are the items which have the biggest performance impact? I'd say the new special effects and detailed water?

Anyone else with a similar system having performance issues with campaigns and/or DCG missions?

If its only a problem in the campaign then it isn't the video at all. Its definitely the CPU and all of the calculations it has to make...all of the AI on the map...every shot being fired between opposing artillery and tank formations, every plane (except yours) and so forth. If you have a fast GPU but a slower CPU then you're FPS is constrained by how fast the CPU can do...the video card will just be waiting around for the CPU to catch up.

Thats why its absolutely essential that if you build a gaming rig...particularly one that is for flight simulation...that you match and spend proportionate amounts of money on CPU and GPU in combination (and RAM too) otherwise one is wasted.

The other thing being that a detailed DCG campaign is going to stress your CPU more than any other application. A good couple of hours of IL-2 gaming is nearly as good as a full out "burn in" (normally these are done at a manufacturer where they run diagnostics that stress the hardware to the maximum to ensure system stability).

I've got a pants CPU (P4 1.5mhz) and a weak GPU (Nvidia FX5200) but more RAM ((1gb, up from 256mb) made me a happ(ier) camper. Also stuff like the FS_AutoStart program that shuts down background applications to allow your computer to concentrate on what matters helps.

Second that with FSAutostart. I couldn't even use the Finnish campaign until I found this (512MB).

Sound is the biggest FPS killer. Try turning off the sound in conf.ini and see whether you get a fps boost.

You might also try switching from DirectX to OpenGL (or the other way around, as the case may be).

I know one instance when as you start a campaign the campaign will play with different graphics settings than the settings you have as default. I had typeclowds=0 in conf.ini, that is the clowds I have are the old ones, less FPS demanding. But starting a campaign I noticed that the campaign plays with the new clowds which was very bad performance-wise. So I asked around and Tully told me the fix: before starting a campaign, fly a bit (1 second is enough http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif) in Quick Mission Builder. Then start your campaign. The old clowds were back!If you start the campaign without doing that at the beginning, the QMB trick will not work if you try later during campaign. Not sure if there are other graphics settings which the campaign change at start. Water? Effects?
Still you've got a powerfull PC (at least in comparison to mine http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif), and something is weird about those 10 FPS even with a crowded mission. You run perfect settings? And how much FPS you get say in a QMB mission?

The FPS I get on average in multiplayer and in QMB are between 25 and 40 (depending on the action) with above settings at 1280x1024.

I'm no tech but the first question to answer is: for your PC, is 25-40 FPS a reasonable rate, and I have a feeling it's not. So the best is ask the tech guys in Community Help Forum about how to improve performance.
One thing is obvious from conf.ini file:your graphics settings are high. You can try lowering to:
TypeClouds=0
Forest=2
Water=1
Effects=0 or 1
But the clouds, trees in the towns and the water will not look so nice then...
And all other advices people posted above (about freeing memory before running the game etc) will help bring some more performance...Especially the tobacco-alcoholic one http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Yes according to the readme Effects=2 needs at least a P4 3.0Ghz, so I thought giving it a try with me new system.

I have reduced this back to 1 now, but there's not really an improvement in performance.
I will try and see what reduced water and forest gives.

You know, Yskonyn, If you don't mind an empty sky, you can just turn off clouds. I see you play off line, so having them on handicaps you since the AI pilots can see right through them anyway.

Anyway I've tried lowering to

In QMB the FPS goes above 40 now, but averages between 35-45. Quite ok of course, but no significant improvement over the high settings.
(All tests on the Okinawa map)

In the Campaigns I still get 8 FPS while on the ground and around 15 when flying, no improvement whatsoever over the high settings!!
(All tests in the same mission generated by DCG)

What does this mean?

The above settings ending in NV are for Nvidia cards. Set those to =0 and test.

What ATI Drivers are you using? You may want to post a Dxdiag so we can have a look.

If you are playing on one of the larger maps and you are adding big formations of planes with lots of ground targets, 1gb of ram is likely the problem for the big slowdowns. You really should have 2gb of ram to cover all the bases.

I am using the cat 7.4's
DirectX 9.0c (april rel).
No errors reported.

I've changed the two inputs, but it doesn't seem to improve much, if any, only 2 fps.
I switched from Anisotropic to Trilinear filtering and that upped my FPS to around 12-15 fps on the ground with 3 wings of 4 aircraft lined up.

Does the
AirIntensity=High
GroundIntensity=High
settings make a lot of difference when using DCG to create missions or are they ignored?

I was wondering, if these are set on High (like I have set them) and you are using DCG to create missions, which already increased the amount of active objects maybe you create overkill?

(Number of objects in the mission. They all probably need a bit of CPU ... )

It may be then that the mission is very crowded as suggested. If you could locate the mission in the Campaign folder, open it with notepad and count the number of items under [Wing], [Chiefs], [NStationary] and [Buildings], that might tell how crowded is the mission. Or even try to paste it here to see if that's indeed the cause.
One test. Start Full Mission Builder and open the guilty mission. After it opens, go to file>play. Play the mission and measure FPS. Is it the same 8-15 FPS?

Too many objects?

Loading the mission in the FMB and playing it yields the same performance, but then again, why wouldn't it? The mission is already compiled and running it either via the campaign menu or from the fmb will still load the same mission, no?

A little alcohol only improves endurance, it's the candying up the nose that's the worst.

I counted 20 flights, but I don't know how many AC per flight. So it might be somewhere between 20 and 80! aircraft in the mission. If it's more like 80 than 20 than it's heavy. You can count the total no. of planes looking at each entry like this:

Fuel 100
weapons default
and adding the numbers.
Seems it's a crowded mission...

Sooo, we might have a cause here. How can you limit the amount of objects DCG creates and still; does DCG uses the AirIntensity=High
GroundIntensity=High settings on top of its own settings or not (hence creating a possible overkill in objects)?

Well its impossible to find out testing missions because DCG will generate a different mission each time.
Maybe we can get a general overview in the amount of objects generated with the switches set to Low or High, but it won't be 100% accurate.

EDIT: Ok, Paul has been contacted, but I've done my own research in the mean time.
The two conf.ini entries don't seem to alter the amount of objects when you let DCG generate a mission. Remove them, set them to Low, set them to High, still the mission generates between 76 and 89(!!) flights with the same settings in DCG (squadron density Heavy).
I have now tried the density at Full, Dense and Heavy and surprisingly the amount of generated aircraft is still roughly the same, so I am beginning to wonder if the listed flights aren't the AVAILABLE ones, but may not spawn in-game if you set the Squadron Density lower. If so it's impossible to test any further...

Ok gents,

I've got a reply from Lowengrin and apparently he tested my findings and aknowledges that there indeed is little difference in the amount of aircraft being generated in Moderate, Heavy and Dense. They all come out at around 76-89 aircraft in my tests.
He will look into it.

Still the question remains how people can get decent performance in campaigns if they play on heavy or dense squadron settings and I can't!! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/51.gif
