View Full Version : I give up with this game..

After the initial excitement with Silent Hunter 3 I have decided to uninstall it.

Why? too many dam bugs.. first all my compasses are all out of sync.. compass reading says one thing.. observational periscope says something completely different, and attack periscope something different again.. I used the patch and the mod fix but this did not help.
http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/compsmash.gif
The nav tool buttons at the top of the screen in map mode hardly work at all.. sometimes requiring several clicks to activate them.

Still keep getting "dud" torpedoes even though I disable the "dud" in the realism settings.

But that's nothing compered to this next problem.
When I try to play in career mode.. I do hours and hours patrols.. I've even played a straight 17 hours on this game.. then when I want to stop.. I make sure I am in a quiet calm open water with no enemy for 100 miles.. save the game and exit.

The next day when I reload the game to continue my career as soon as it loads after 5 seconds.. it says: "U-Boat destroyed, mission failed"

So my entire progress is lost.. this happens every single time.. with every single saved game I have.

I created new profiles.. started whole new careers.. at different times during the war.. but the same thing happened whenever reloading any saved game.

So I give up... it's really poor form that I pay 40 for a game then have to become a mod expert to get the thing to work properly.. even then it does not.

So I'm removing it from my hard drive to avoid further wasting time and courting constant disappointment and frustration.

Off in search for something else to play.. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/compsmash.gif

Some of those problems are you, not the game. You know that the periscopes show bearing relative to the boat and the compass shows compass heading, right? They're not going to be the same unless you're heading straight north. Duds are faulty torpedoes, if you have duds turned off and your torpedoes aren't going off it's because your magnetic shots are too deep or your impact shots are at too much of an angle. Even a straight 90 degree impact shot will bounce off if it's too deep and hits the bottom curve of the hull. No duds doesn't mean every torpedo is going to explode, you still need a good shot.

The savegame bug sounds pretty brutal, I admit.

Funny very few of the rest of us have your problems. These problems were all pre-Patch 1.4b, have you patched up to this.

If so, a few questions
1) What system do you have - does it meet minimum requirements ?
2) Are you up to date with WW2 naval systems and terminologies - This might cause confusion with 'newbies'
3) Are you knowledgable on the WW2 UBoat war ?

You might find you're missing the finer facts, which can be resolved via the forum, and further reading. (ie: Your dud torp might not be dud, but it hit the ship at wrong depth or angle - thus it would not explode).

Hang on a bit b4 you remove it, Once the problem are sorted out, you'll be around for many a day.

1. Yes I more then meet the minimum system requirements.

2 Yes I installed the latest patch soon as I installed the game.

3. I do know the difference when my nav instruments are out of sync thanx, http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif so no its not a newbie issue.. I can be heading "straight north, zero degrees" in sub.. then with observation periscope I can see the front tip of the sub when looking down and so can line them up so it too should now read north.. except it does not.

4 Yes, the worst thing is that all saved career games just instantly fail me by destoying my sub on reload. So I can not make any progress at all..

Perhaps I just have a dud copy.. I'm glad your all having a great time with this game.

Maybe I just need to go back to store and change my copy..

Peace.

It looks like you might have been duped by the retailer (who might be non-the-wiser) and purchased a pre-release copy.

It sounds like a development version has found it's way to you. Take the police to your retailer http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/compsmash.gif

I bought the game when it first came out and i have never seen a bug whilst playing the stock version http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif I appreciate i may have been lucky or blind http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif but i cannot help but think it will be your system causing you the trouble.

Please post your specs so we can take a look and maybe even offer some advice.

If not take your whine elsewhere http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/winky.gif cause either your thread is a cry for help or whinge. if it is a cry for help please ignore this sentence http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif

Just a lucky guess... Your watch crew sometimes don't notice airplanes.. so maybe a bomb impact puts a sudden end to a career? This is

especially bad in high time compression. Also, are you submerged in a minefield? That could be self- explanatory http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

This is trial and error stuff to learn about. You don't read it in the manual. I spent hours and hours and hours learning about the likelihood of torpedos failing to explode, while having duds off, based on the queer angles at the bottom or the side of the hull, even with 90deg shots. It made me an expert at depth settings, that's for sure. You reason it's either duds somehow or the angles and ultimately figure it's angles. It has to be. This is not history so much as practical application.

That being said, I've had huge problems with this sim regarding repeated crashes. I've literally had to go though weeks of the occasional crash, (getting thru 3 years of missions though)followed by crashes every time on loading, then uninstall/reinstall a FEW times, including 1.4b, then it works but then the campaigns don't, then U/R again and finally after a week of attempts I get back to begining campaigns again.

I have just the mimimum in terms of RAM(512) and I think that's the rub. I've found that shutting down background Outlook Express(e-mail) helps with the stability and the crashes on crew reordering.

The thing is both in terms of game play and the historical interest connection, I love this sim. It's just at the edge of what I can handle graphically with my machine, albeit an advanced one for three years ago. It's hard to keep up with the jumps. Just to get more RAM it's like $300.

So there's some more feedback on the issues.

You are not by any chance reading the torpedo gyro angle are you?

I am only asking because there isn't any compass on any of the scopes.

Perhaps you can give us a screenshot of what you are talking about?

Here is a screenshot of my own sub taken a while back.

Sorry for the large size.

http://www.mnsi.net/~mhumenny/LookingBack.JPG

My heading in the lower right corner reads 20 degrees, my scope bearing is 180 and torpeo gyroangle is 157.

The compass in the lower right corner is of course not part of the scope view but the general interface. So with what compass is it not alinged with?

I have a gig of ram and shut down all non-essential processes and it doesn't help. I just had to reinstall and lost a 37 patrol campaign. Hence my love/hate relationship with this game.

I've got 2 gigs of RAM on an Athlon 64 3200+ and this game just flies. I don't even bother to unload background stuff. This game definitely loves RAM, the more the better.

Looking at your screen shot, you are looking out over your flak gun position, so you are in fact looking aft (that bearing is 180) from whatever course you are sailing and that is what's showing on your scope. Your actual course is roughly due North but you are looking almost due South, not a game issue on this one.
I also believe that the gyro angle is meaningless unless you are locked in on a target, and I didn't see one in the shot, but I might have missed it.

Wow I did not expect such a flurry of replies.. thanks a lot for all your time and minds and efforts..

If I could play the game for 17 hours straight..(real time) with no lag or lock ups or freezes then I obviously met the system requirements...this id hardly the most demanding game there is and I have played far more greedy beasts without a problem. Useing that excuse offers no sulution to the u-boat explodeing on r-loading every single saved game..

I mean come on get real.. I'm in Wilhelmsaven parked in my in my own dock in career mode.. I save the game.. re-load the saved game and my u-boat is instantly destroyed?!! A mine field in my own port? a stray torpedo perhaps? IN EVERY SAVED GAME EVERYWHERE?! I doubt that theory very much

Well I can't take any screen shots now as I removed the game entirely.. and went and got my money back. Perhaps I'll buy it again elsewhere and try again.

Peace
