Hey Gents,

I'd like to get your advice on dropping bombs on shipping.

What is your preferred descent angle, speed, and height from which to drop the bomb(s) to both successfully hit the vessel, and be able to climb away without being destroyed by the blast.

Thanx. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

If using an SBD I try to dive nearly straight down. I think they proper procedure was to dive at about a 70% angle, but I figure why not go straight down or close to it.

I chop my throttle to 0% just as I start the dive and then I open the dive brakes. My speed is whatever the plane gets to in an unpowered dive.

I like to start the dive at a minimum of 10,000 feet, but I'll go higher if I can. I probably wouldn't go much above 12,000 feet unless there was a specific need to do so.

Set your time delay for a few seconds if you are worried about the bomb blast. In the game, the delay neither helps nor hurts you as far as the damage model of the ship is concerned.

I try to release at about 1,500 feet, but I often drop lower than that because I want to get as close as I can before releasing.

Thanks Zues,

I guess I should have specified what type of aircraft I was using...just for the sake of interest, say I was using something like a fighter that was being utilized as a bomber for that mission?

Also, how do you set the time delay on bombs?

Lastly, (and this is kind of off-topic) I see you have some Rufe campaigns that you've created.
Whenever I've taken that plane into combat, it seems like the central float gets shot off if the enemy so much as looks at it sternly. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/icon_twisted.gif Seriously, it seems like one shot from a .22 cal. pistol could take the $@^^&$ off. This is, of course, quite absurd. Have you been able to get past that shortcoming in the PF version of the plane?

Thanks

I would come in shallow with a fighter; no more than 30 degrees. They weren't made for dive bombing and don't have a dive brake to keep the speed low.

You won't do much dogfighting in the Rufe campaigns; they really aren't capable of it. You do bomber intercept and light ground attack missions for the most part. You start most of the missions with a catapult launch off of a heavy cruiser.

No advice, only tracks (http://www.esnips.com/doc/80ec35fd-0bc9-4337-8c02-f79753fcfe56/DKoorSBD-diveruns-408).

Zues,

I downloaded and began your Straight Shot campaign. Great fun so far! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/metal.gif
The Rufe is such an interesting plane (perhaps more so for me, since I have a seaplane endorsement on my private pilot's license) and it makes for some cool alternative flying in the sim.

I'm curious now about your other Rufe campaign. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/clap.gif

Straight Shot can be played with just PF. Straight Into an Icy Hell requires the full game because of the map I used.

I know you are going to get alot of different responses, but this is what works for me.

- Approach the ship head on. Fly an opposite but parralell course to the ship at about 3~3.5 Km.

- Right after you fly directly over the ship, roll over inverted and pull back on the stick into your dive while lowering the dive breaks. Cutting throttle to half or 50% is optional. Actually, if I am taking alot of flak, I sometimes leave the throttle open.

- While in the dive, aim for the bow of the ship, as it will move after you drop your bomb. Aim for the very front, and your bomb will probably land somwhere in the middle of the ship. Also, take into account that your sight is offset. Just by practicing with a certain plane you will find out where that is. Usually though, aim a little to the right.

- After releasing the bomb, raise your dive brakes and get outa dodge.

This works for me. Try it, see if you like it. It is pretty simple, and for me it improved my hit rate significantly.
