I'm thinking of getting one, I just want to know how many in the IL2 community have it. If not that many do, I'm not going to bother.

I do, as do at least two other members of my squad. I think it could be significantly more, and I know a couple want one.

Yup I got it too..

Before I got it I couldn't get on with the cockpit on view very well, could never get used to padlock and found the snap views to limiting for my own taste, but now its a different game IMO, being able to track targets and check six easily while manouvering - fantastic, recommend it to anyone, even RBJ /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

I never got past 30 min with padlock never liked it in cfs either. And tried mouse view for about an hour, and decided screw it and ordered the TIR, and have never looked back.

Well in time anyways LOL at my 6 all the time.

But with all the fuss I'm going to go ahead and try the latest drivers. Just to see if they are better than the 2.0 version that came on the disc. 2.0 can be a bit squirly.

I use TrackIR - have been since IL2 - the integrated dll in FB is much nicer as well.

I still think the need for such a hardware device is really needed because the view system isn't so great.

I'd like to see future flight sim with a much better visual tracking system.

Meanwhile - TrackIR is great - nothing better than looking around without using your thumb http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Especially when you get older like me - my thumb was killing me! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I have it, but i'm confused by your question. Why do you care how many have it? Is there a magic number where you say, that's enough, i'll get it now?

No, the thing is, I'm doing a bit of research in advance. I look at the reviews of the product, and I see how many people have it in the sim. If many do, my FATHER will see the point of me getting it. He won't let me buy anything if it is used by only a minority. My joystick for example, I bought the microsoft precision 2 joystick, but before I could hand over the cash, I had to wait one hour just so he could go online and check the reviews, It's not my fault my Pa wants to control a 16 yr. old's expenses, with my own money!!

Ah ok ,that makes sense. I think at some point. The majority of flight simmers will be using TrackIR. It's just so natural to fly with it. What can be more normal than looking left to see left. You don't even have to think about it. You've been doing it all your life.

The one about 'How long do you spend playing FB' has been hanging around a bit now.
It seems that TrackIR use is on the increase if these boards are anything to go by.

Cheers.

I have one, and it really is a multiplier when it comes to the fun part of the sim.

I don't use mine while engaged with the enemy (I'm a bit of a spaz), preferring a hat and PL, but for scanning the skies or just looking about it's fantastic.

There are a few things to know about the unit besides how it acts in the sim:

1) It's very simple and durable - no moving parts, easy set up, and small. I can't think of a reason other than a lightning strike that it would fail. The "dots" are inexpensive, and if you spend two bucks you can get a strip of the stuff and sew a square to the end of your mic boom and never worry about running out.

2) There's a hidden benefit to buying one. I'm not usually altruistic in my buying habits, but it was nice to know that the primary use of the TrackIR is for the handicapped - it just happens to work great for sims. Economy of scale through gamers means that the less fortunate get a great help for far less.

It's nice to have a dual-purpose bit of technology where one of "duals" isn't military!

I guess you could categorize the TrackIR as "common" but not "popular," in the sense that when looking at a flight sim computer rig the inclusion of the unit wouldn't be a real "woooo" kind of thing, but the exclusion wouldn't be that big a deal, either.

P.S. It works great in MOHAA:Spearhead on the levels where you drive the tank!

Also, thank your Dad for taking the time to get involved with your buying habits, walking you through the research (and making you do your homework). It will save you literally tens of thousands of dollars throughout your life if you get the lesson he's teaching....

It's a must buy with FB and the built in support that FB offers. It's the best, especially with a great onlin ecommunity like this one to help you fine tune the software.

That about sums it up for me too, I also don't get disorientated anymore as to which way I'm panning, the position of your own head is perfect instant reference, like you said it there, its just natural.

On another note, I've read quite a few comments in other posts about the need to keep your head robotically still when aiming etc, however in my experience so far its not the case, was to begin with, but I put that down to both my inexperience in using it (way too much head movement than required) and my setup as was within the profiles. Not a problem now at all, it is very configurable to suit your 'style'.

Roger Boosher,
I have the 3d glasses but havent used them much since, it slows down my system a bit. Specially FB. I used them with Il2 but havent really used them with FB.
Regarding Track IR, I really would love to get it. I really adds a level of immersion that cant really be compared to anything.
In a way imagine that brings you a tad closer to feeling like youre flying the real thing, just like wearing the 3d glasses do.
I would buy them, but first I have to save money to build Bluefalcons rig...

Take care and good luck...

I can see what you mean about getting your pap's approval.. Great job Boosher, you respect your Pa and you'll go a long way !!

I'm another super-fan of TrackIR. The best part about it is - and this has been hinted at on the naturalpoint website - is that the more people that buy it - the more funding they have for R&D of a 3-dimensional TrackIR! In other words, no more complaining about struts and bars blocking the Revi glass or whatever - the next generation of flight sims will track not only your head space in x and y but also z (depth) - I can't wait!!!

And when setup correctly in IL-2 FB that supports it natively it will work wonders.

I have it. It took a month or so to tweak it. It was the best addition to the flight sim experience that I have ever experienced. However, I don't get the full back views like some people have shown. Mine is only the views that you get with the panning etc. Maybe since I only utilized version 2.01(??). I don't know. It cracks me up when people call it a cheat. Its just a tool that is utilized by someone which requires alot of practice. I think these people should quit whining(I am a FW 190 whiner so there - lol) and just go get one if they feel it gives a person an advantage. I will never fly a sim without it again - NEVER! Its that good.
