I tried to keep these historically arranged. If I missed some, feel free to add them below. Note: These are WWII related sim's only, and are linked from websites (some images may not load for you - try to reload).

Personally... I started out with Silent Service II http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Freaks me out how bad the old ones look. I mean they are not like that in my memory at all!!!

Totally off topic but it makes me realise how dodgy evidence in court is when its from memory, our memories can play tricks on us after time!

For me, all of them look fine. Got lot of fun with Gato!

You are aware that there are ATARI emulators right? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif Easy enough to find your favorite ROMS.

You dont remember them like that because at the time, you were blown away by the graphics.

I also play the NASCAR sims from Papy and I remember when I played the first nascar title from papy, I was totaly blown away by the graphics. I thought they were SOOO good, that they could never get any better. The other day I saw a screen shot from that original game and its hard to imagine how I even played it. The graphics were TERRRIBLE!!

Also-
What the heck is going on with that first game "Submarine Commander"? I cant even tell whats going on LOL. If this wasnt a sub sim forum, I wouldnt even be able to tell that was a sub game!

I think in that first one they are experimenting with volumetric shadows.

I only played three of those: Gato, Silent Service II and Aces of the Deep. SS2 and AoD are my favourite sub sims to date. In my opinion AoD just barely wins out over SS2 because it had all the ace stats and was just a bit more immersive.

I also remember something called 'Sub Hunt' - might have been for the Intellivision. Does anyone else remember that one?

The only "legal" site I know of for downloading abandonware is
http://www.the-underdogs.org/
They are very careful to only allow downloads of abandonware, shareware, or programs where the publisher has given permission for free download. In the event the software is still a purchase only to get it legally, he usually lists where you can still buy an old title. It does not list warez or cracked games, and will turn you into authorities if you try to upload any to their site.

Note again...this site monitors itself contantly to make sure it's not listing anything for download that is still purchase only stuff. It's the only one that I know of that does this.

Now the legal part is over.... I checked under SIMS, and it does have AOTD listed for download. You can also find Silent Hunter on there, but that is still a current title for purchase, So you will find a "Buy" icon there instead of a download link. Good people here, as well as an excellent museum of gaming software. Hope that helps!

This link should take you directly to the Subsim area.
