Is it lame in full realism mode to let the Watch Officer determine range for you?

I realize that only works at long range, in good weather where you have spotted them and they haven't spotted you yet (outside 6k M), but it still feels like sort of a a cheat.

Finally, what tips are there for finding range. I know about the persiscope, but I think I'm way off due to the bobbing of my periscope. Looking for ways to double check that result.)
