Whats with the two metal channels on either side of the windshield!...that can't be correct can it?? surely the navy wouldn't ad a pair of braces there would they??

Those are the brackets that hold the glass for the reflector sight.

They are the supports not only for the gunsight reflector but also a flat armored glass panel. The curved plexiglass windscreen was not armored, as was true for all aircraft with curved windscreens, so a flat armored glass panel was installed behind the windscreen. The F6F-3 early models were the same way. During the production run of the F4U-4 the curved windscreen was changed to a flat windscreen made of armored glass. Interesting note, the first batch of -4's retained the curved windscreen of the -1D.
