Hi everybody, I just wanted to introduce myself and say that I am a keen enthusiast of the Battle of the Atlantic. For me my primary motivation in buying this game was that very reason, I am a history boy and as such very very fascinated with the Battle of the Atlantic and of course the U-Boat war.

I never knew that SH3 existed till a few days back when I happened on a video on YouTube showing a Type VIIC in action, I found out the game was was Silent Hunter 3 so without hesitation or pausing for breath even! I ordered myself a copy and I am hoping and praying that it arrives tomorrow.

I have been reading some of your adventures here, and of course reading over the kinds of problems you have had. I read a lot about the "Grey Wolves" mod. And After I play the base game a bit, I may well consider branching out into Mods.

I am actually a flyboy/Brylcreem Boy when it comes to Simulation games. LOL most of my simming has been done up in the air at 20,000 feet. Now, Im hoping to do some simming in a 20,000 Leauges under the sea fashion. I am not sure how easily I will make the adjustment, but, the interest in the game and the U-Boats is already there, so I think that should carry me through.

I am very excited about starting a "career" as I go from new Captain to U-Boat Ace. I am very keen to see how far I can last in the war, and how many patrols I can rack up before the war ends, or I get blown up... whichever comes first... probably the latter! lol

The only thing I will ask is, I have read some books about the Type II coastal boats and I did see that you can have a IIA and IID in this game and I just wondered, does anybody play out the IID when it becomes available to them, or do you just jump straight into the VII series?<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Hello Demigod, and welcome to the forums. SH3 is a great game, prepare to be seriously addicted to it and to these forums.

Most people play the VII and IX boats, I think it's only a minority that plays with the II boats. I never had the patience to bugger around with such small boats, and I usually begin my career in a VII boat.

Don't forget when you get the game to patch up immediatly to version 1.4, that rules out a lot of bugs in the 1.0 version.

Good luck http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Welcome to SH3 http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Personally I enjoy the IIA/D patrols till I can afford a VIIB.

Once you've played a bit be sure to check out the mods that are available. Grey Wolves 1.1a or NYGM 2.2 are great ones to start with.

If you enjoy the career aspect of things, look into Wolves At War (http://www.wolvesatwar.com/) as an option. It's a way to play though WWII as a captain in a historically accurate flotilla. We're in Mar-May 1942 currently, so it's getting dangerous! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Hi, thanks for the welcomes! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

I am getting the CD-ROM version of the game, and I am in the UK, so will I need the european DVD patch? Or will I be ok as is? Just want to check as I don't want nothing to come between me and my sinkings!

I gathered that the guys here use the VII and IX boats. Personally, I can see that they are good picks, particularly the IX boats, as they have the range and the firepower, but its all about strengths and weaknesses and which you prefer. Personally I would be inclined to be in VII.

I would love a XXI when they become available though, but if I don't get one on the first go round, good incentive to play a second I think. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Thinking about it, I would probably stick to the IIA till get enough renown points to upgrade to a VII. In any case, I am really looking forward to playing this game, and it has such good scores everywhere, I think I should be fine.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Yes you'll need the European DVD patch(es). You will be o.k. to get going straight out of the box, but it is nevertheless URGENTLY recommended that you patch the game to v. 1.4 (i.e. all three patches 1.1-1.3., either added indiviudually or they are also available as one big download, I think - 1.4. means "summary of all three patches"). Collectively, they take care of quite a number of minor and not so minor glitches which make the as-out-of-box game somewhat erratic at times.

For using the supermods, it is ESSENTIAL that the game is patched to 1.4; all supermods assume that your game is patched and may not run properly when installed over the unpatched stock game.

Welcome to the forum, and enjoy the game! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/partyhat.gif<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Welcome! When I first got SH3, I went right to a VIIB, but after doing about 15 patrols I decided to go back to the beginning and I started in a IIA. It was a shock to only have 5 torpedos, but I snuck into the Scapa Flow and got me a destroyer and cruiser, so I was happy. It is a challenge at first, but you really appreciate that German engineering once to trade up. Good luck and good hunting!

Apply the EMEA DVD 1.4b update from http://www.silent-hunteriii.com/uk/updates.php immediately after you install the game. Ignore the dialogue box saying it's installing 1.3 - the patch installer needs to be patched.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Welcome to SH3 and the forums here! You'll find that SH3 is a cool game, with lots of details and loads of replay value. I'm still at it ever since the game arrived in early 2005!

I play the Typ-IIA/D abd Typ-VIIB/C/C41 boats. While the Typ-VII is a good all-purpose boat, I enjoy the challenge of the Typ-II (especially the Typ-IIA). With only 5 torpedos, you have to make every shot count!

The other thing with the Typ-II boats is that the patrols are short. Thus you can play lots of short patrols, rather than a few monolithic missions with, say, a Typ-IXD2.

The Typ-IID gets the option of a second Flak gun, but otherwise there is not a lot of difference. If you're in it for the challenge, then you'll stick with the Typ-IIA.

On the other hand, I don't know of any Typ-IID specialists, so maybe here's a niche market for you!

Good luck with whatever you choose, and once again welcome to SH3 and our community. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Be sure to check out the Community Manual (http://www.communitymanuals.com/shiii/index.php?title=Main_Page) for the game - it's a lot more comprehensive than the one you get with the game http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Welcome to a fellow flier and history nut. The transition to U-boats was fairly smooth. I find myself using some of the same tactics. Flank Speed Ahead, Fire, Fire, Fire and then dive to escape. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/winky.gif

Socko wants to know what all this talk it about other boats http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif The Type IIA is the finest killing machine ever produced. He ranted on like that for several hours using words I can't print here. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif Again welcome to the game and the forum.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">
