Off topic, but remotely related, since it involves Germans and engineering: I wish Celeon could see those new TV ads for VW, starring Peter Stormare [the thug from "Fargo" and also starring in "Prison Break".] He dresses all in white [like the Pope in Celeon's sig line] and does some really [intentionally] lame hip-hop parody while they smash a pimped out car. Does anybody know where I could download these ads? I checked the VW site but no luck; they only have links to the music in their ads.

Why is it that just because the Golf (among other things) is made in Germany that it is better then anything else. That commercial is funny, but it creeps me out! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

It's an indirect reference to Germany's heritage of being good engineers and crafting fine automobiles. During the war, they had, for instance, the best gunnery optics, binoculars and advanced weaponry.

Today I just read that the Consumer Reports magazine has picked all Japanese cars for their top picks for 2006. This does not bode well for North American car manufacturers. The Japanese and Germans are increasingly being perceived as building better cars. Sadly, I think the domestic manufacturers are also recognizing that as well. Now I'm seeing Korean cars being rebadged here as Chevys and Pontiacs. Not a good sign for our economies.

Doesn't matter where they are made, the plans and specifications come from German designers and engineers. And they have higher standards. Just by openning and closing the door on my BMW you can tell it is a solidly built car. Same goes for "V-dub" and Audi's.

Much of it has to do with "Mass Produced" versus "Quality"

USA Mass produces everything and it shows in a decrease in quality, whereas the Germans and Japanese have perfected quality control.

I'm trying to come up with a list of items that the USA quality produces anymore and I'm drawing a blank.... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

It use to be that the US built the best TVs, not anymore
Although Phillips developed the CD player, it was the Japanese that perfected it.

Furniture...That's it!!!! We produce quality furniture, along with the Canadians I might add (The_Silent_O owns a Canadian built bedroom set...and it's sturdy http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/heart.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/inlove.gif).

We produce quality action films in Hollywood...the the foreign films are better written these days!

What else ???? Oh yeah...Boubon! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/clap.gif But not Scotch! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/51.gif

Yeah, that's right, a woodchipper. Stupid me. What would somebody be doing out on a lake in winter with a meat grinder? I guess I was inadvertantly using it in a figurative sense; it was in a sense being used as a meat grinder.

Yucky stuff. I watched the "Iceman Tapes" on A&E recently [there's one thing the U.S. is still good at: true crime shows] and the subject talked about dispassionately "disassembling" human bodies for disposal.

Peter Stormare went from sticking a body into a woodchipper [Fargo] to chopping off toes [Prison Break] and now to unpimping cars. Hey, he's mellowing in his old age.

I wouldn't necessarily consider those consumer items...but I understand where you are coming from. yeah, when it comes to leading edge scientific stuff...we're there.

It`s a global issue I guess. It might be true that some countries have less of a tendency to get sloppy but with nowadays consumer oriented society one can hardly hope to sell quality items for a reasonable price.

Ok then Celeon is happy http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

As i was browsing the Diehl-bgt website for information on the Barracuda torpedo lately, i was surprised to find out they list the Predator B among their "core competences". http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

As i searched further information i found out that they are the main sub-contractor for the entire Predator program. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
