S! all of you !

It happened to me once again and I decided to write here. Perhaps it will help.

My wingman again crashed into me in some easy formation flying...

Could 1C change the default distance between the planes in formation? If the game engine doesn't handle formation flying very well, this could be an easy solution...

I also noticed that planes do not keep in formation I ordered them to fly in (except default formation, of course).

I order finger four formation, and after a while, everybody si happily flying in echolon right... crashing into each other... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

Plz fix this, should be simple and this is very annoying bug!

thx

I occasionally issue the "Loosten Formation" command and it helps. The ai will sometimes revert to their default formation and require an updated command.

Many times this has been asked, pricipally by jetbuff I think, before 1.21. Oleg could have done it then, it`s a reasonable request.

All I can say that maybe in the New Year he will either program better routine for AI avoidance of collision, or simply increase the spacing a notch.

But do not hold your breath till after Xmas.

My solution: Widen your own formation.

"Loosen formation" is a good solution when you lead a flight. But it's of no use when you fly as a wingman. Also collisions between escorts are at least as big a problem as collisions within your own flight. Most Bomber campaigns find me out of escorts by the 20th mission or so because of collisions. I'm running FB on an older computer so I have to run the campaigns pretty sparse. If you have the horsepower to run a lot of planes in the missions then it may take longer.

This is a huge problem & needs to be fixed! It makes playing campaigns as a wingman too frustrating. It makes playing bomber campaigns too frustrating. You'll be flying along in a stuka & see your escorts blaze past you wide open & then you see the leader suddenly yank into a hard right turn straight into #2. Now we have two escorts instead of four. & when they meet the enemy they get decimated. Now we're down four escorts. It doesn't take too many missions like that before all your escorts are gone. It makes me want to throw my joystick through the window!

I don't see this happening at all in the missions I make - has to be something to do with the ones the campaign generator spits out.

Some suggestions:

Ditch 4 ship formations and use 2 plane ones, with the 2nd fighter flight in the squad escorting the first. First flight escorts the bombers. Alt and more importantly speed seperation with the escort target is the key. The closer they are to the bombers speed the closer they'll get before breaking into the escort circle - sometimes they'll actually run into each other directly [all 4 planes hitting all 4 bombers] if set to the same speed. For some reason the collision avoidance AI often doesn't react quickly enough, especially to planes with a slow rate of closure. Vet and Ace AI tend to be much better at it than Avg or Rookie AI too.

The other way around it is to skip 'escort' commands entirely, and set waypoints by hand for the escort flight - a zig zag over the bombers/transports waypoints usually works. This requires a bit more work but can actually end up with better results - the 'zig zag' flight in front will find and intercept enemies in advance of the bombers, and the 'tied' escorts will join the fight from a speed / alt advantage when the bombers come along by it.

It is a bit of a mystery why DGen isn't doing this already.
