with a strong wind sea gulls will advance aginst the wind without moving the wings

only similar thing ever heard similar was on tv when i was a kid

a guy would take a hair drier and a pingpong ball, he didnt levitate it instead the ball was sucked to the mouth of the hair drier

i rmenber it clearly because it was opposite of what you would expect

of course it could be a false memory because i remember clearly having flown as a kid as well

do you know something of this effect?

They tack into the wind much like a sailboat. They dont fight the wind they harmonize with it.

Either that or they eat a hell of alot of beans.

Once seen a gull eat so much cheese (in inch sq. chunks) that the last piece was showing at the top of its gullet and it couldnt fly away. Also seen a picture of a gull I think it was a larger species than our local Great Lakes gulls that had the two back feet of a rabbit sticking out of its gullet, and it was flying with no apparent probs.

do you know something of this effect?

Yep, it's one of Bernoulli's laws.

As for the gulls - it's called "dynamic gliding".

Ever cup your hand and put it out a moving car? As you move your hand it creates lift, and when u tilt it, your hand dives.. something to that effect with birds.

Bernoulli's law

Heres a better explanation
http://scienceofmotherhood.blogspot.com/2006/08/bernoul...-things-science.html (http://scienceofmotherhood.blogspot.com/2006/08/bernoulli-helps-explain-things-science.html)

They had a good bit on tv last night about Bernoulli's law and how a curveball works.

segulls are actually "lighter then air" except when they eat to many stolen picnics sammiches and natchos... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Seagulls are overmodelled and some have small jet engines mounted under their wings.

Same reason a Spitfire and FW190 have to flap their wings to move forward...?

Yeah I was on a gig a few weeks ago where I was taking my lunch break along the Chicago River in down town. Seagulls were evident; cruising the river by the Mercantile Exchange, gliding- almost motionless at times as they scanned the water for a snack. Its the same effect you see when they have that Doolittle Raid (no pun intended http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif ) footage and the B-25's are taking off the carrier in high wind conditions. The bombers were moving as fast as the carrier, plus the indicated wind speed. So although not technically flying, the force over the wings were 40+ MPH standing still.

See this

I was waiting for someone to come up with that visual as I thought that would be something you would be able to relate to Raaaid.

Oh man, it's so fun to hop into Flight Simulator, crank the wind up to ridiculous speeds, and see how far you I can go flying into the wind with the Piper Cub before I crash or get ripped apart. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

One of the demo party tricks they used to do in the Auster was take off, throttle back, allow the wind to carry you back down the length of the runway and then land back ....on

Problem with Raaiid is that he`ll spend his time thinking about his own breathing continuously. Too much thinking.

Stop thinking! Just let it happen!

better you paint it green with a ribbon on top, stick it up the middle of a large size pickle jar and offer it to drunken sorority sisters at a frat party.. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

The first one that can pull out the "magic pickle" without brusing it is the winner.. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

reminds me of a movie where some guys at their school dance wizzed in the punch bowl. It was brought to the attention of the assistant principle who was a women about the funny taste and she kept sampling the punch over and over again and saying..

"wait I know this taste! I've had this taste many times in my mouth before"

Is it true that if you throw Alka-Seltzer up into the air a Sea Gull will think you're throwing them a piece if bread and then die because it explodes their stomachs?? I knew it was true, I will believe anything.

Hey and remember that video that Bearcat (or someone) had up about making the carrier speed be really fast and making the aircraft look like they were VTOL http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

That was rather cool I thought http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

will advance aginst the wind without moving the wings

actually, it is rapidly changing the dynamics of it's wings at all times...

also, in the air, there is no such thing as wind, I have been told by a pilot...
It's a volume of air moving along in a direction...
