View Full Version : Fishing Boats Must Die! [Sorry, Chrystine]

I came across this little target on my way out to my patrol zone near Rockall Bank. He must have been heading home with a hold full of kippers. Since in previous encounters I have discovered these may be armed, I approached to investigate. It turns out he was unarmed, however, since he had a radio, I decided he must be sunk lest he give the enemy details about my boat.

This was also a nice opportunity to give my two new flakzwillig their baptism of fire. I jumped from the upper to the lower one several times, so I'm sure I pumped more ammo into that little tub than necessary. I couldn't help myself, I was caught up in the moment! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/59.gif

I tried to get some shots with the tracers in the air but didn't pull it off. Perhaps another time.

Can you ram one?

EDIT: As in, ramming it and sinking it.

You can ram them, but you won't likely get credit, renown or tonnage for doing so. It's best to use flak guns on these smaller vessels. With the 20mm AA gun alone, you can sink ships up to the size of tug boats. The 37mm AA gun is more lethal, but has a much slower rate of fire. I like the twin 20mm AA guns as you see here in my photos. You can jump to the other one while the first reloads, then jump back again, and so forth.

I haven't had any experience yet with the later war bigger flak guns. I'm sure someone will attest to how much fun those ones are, especially the U-flaks.

No apology necessary€¦
I€ve come to despise those little €˜front-line€ spies.
I don€t think it any coincidence that if you encounter one on the surface it€s rarely long before Destroyer(s), Corvette, gunboats or aircraft start showing up at your position.

They deserve the guns€¦
No ammo €" they deserve the saber€¦
Don€t feel like boarding, they deserve the prow in the fashion of an ol€ Greek Trireme.

No loss of sleep for me seeing those rascals €˜fishing€ from the floor of the Atlantic.

€œ Can you ram one? €¦ As in, ramming it and sinking it€

Yeah, you sure can. It€s tricky to do it on the surface, as they€re rather €˜slippery€ little water-weasels.
Works better to come up on them submerged €" then either surface just prior to impact, or at-least going to snorkel depth for the impact.
I€ve sunk a total of three fishing boats by ramming, two from snorkel depth for the initial impact which crippled them enough to simplify the coup de gras on the surface shortly afterward.

Best,
~ C.

I reduced the coastal traffic in my Rnd file to 10% so I do not see them as often.

They drive me crazy. I hate it when I go to great lengths to setup an attack. I'm all ready, in perfect position, pop up the scope - ****! Small coastal merchant!!

In my current patrol I surfaced to kill her with the deck gun. 2 minutes later 5 fighters are diving bombing me. I let the deck gun crew polish off the ship while I fend off the planes. As soon as she's down I crash dive. 30 minutes later and I now have 3 destroyers hunting for me! Arrghh, I should have just ignored the thing.

Has anyone ever caught one on their deck?
As in running submerged, matching the fishing boat's speed and course, then blowing ballast! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Better do it in a IX or XXI as they are the widest boats.

So far on my latest patrol, I've come across two of these guys. The first was picked up by my soundman. This thing was chugging along at a good clip, and sounded just like a warship. So I decided to track the sound, and prepare to attack. You could imagine how pissed I was, after all the prep work, to see this runt come into view. I should have sunk him just for pissing me off. But I was a sport about it and let him go.

The second encounter was last night. I was in TC, when I get the message "Ship Spotted!" It was dusk, and the contact was long range. As I swing the UZO towards the contact, my blood begins to boil! Not again!! Anyway, he was pretty far off, and I had'nt been seen, so I let him fish another day.

Yep, tried it. Took ages because the bloody thing kept changing course. When I finally was in the right position, I blew ballast, got them on the deck and they fell off. And they sank. Got the kill though. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/59.gif

You got the kill!? What you did was essentially ram her, which does not count as far as the game is concerned. Are you sure about this!? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

Yep, I am sure. I also rammed a Liberty once and I also got the kill. Including the unit destroyed message. There are some pics posted here somewhere of that action.

Kaleun, its fish and chips day for me! I have a feeling when i go to the fish shop my dinner will have gone up in price again http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_mad.gif

Im going to send the RAF after you!!

I am completely convinced that these little "fishing boats" act as sensors in the game algorithm.

Everytime I see one, especially near the english coast...a fast destroyer is not far behind.

so yes they have radios and yes they report your position, therefor, yes they are valid targets.

Ha ha! So funny! Oops, wait a minute, I love fish & chips, too. Whenever I visit the U.K. I just love to get some fish & chips [in newspaper, of course] and a side order of mushy peas. Strangely enough, over here in Canada it is almost impossible to get mushy peas, a delicacy I discovered on a visit over there.

My most memorable fish & chips moment was when I visited the Imperial War Museum [worth the air fare on its own!] After visiting the museum I wandered around the East End and found a battered looking little chippy that served such heavenly fish & chips. I still remember the experience over ten years later! Another dish I've never had over here is plaice & chips. My wife's family live in Norfolk, near the coast, so we can always get the really fresh stuff. Yummy!

A few patrols ago I was in my Type II off the Scottish coast in a real pea-souper of a fog. We got a hydrophone contact, which took me what must have been several hours of game time to track down by the sprint, drift & surface method. Imagine my anger when I find this little tub of a fishing boat putting along. I tried jumping on the AA gun but the weather was too rough.

We hurled every piece of refuse aboard and every German invective I could conjure at that little tub after we were unable to ram her. The crew just flashed their hairy backsides at us from under their kilts, sassy Scotties, and flashed us the "V" sign.

I've always found it appropriate with fishing boats to confiscate their catch. I then order the vessel's crew into lifeboats (hard cheese I'm afraid if they don't have one) and give my own crew some flak gun practice. Works for me.

I think I spared these guys because in real life, I'm a pretty big fisherman myself. My buddy is a USCG certified captain, and is licensed to operate vessels up to 100tons. I'll be going for my license soon. This year my friend started a small charter business, and wants me to be a partner so to speak. Ultimately he wants to buy a larger boat to run ocean fishing trips, and I'll run his current boat for trips in Long Island Sound. The course plotting in this sim may actually help me alittle, since my friend told me there is a big section on plotting and navigation on the test.

I guess you could say I have a wierd cyber connection to these fisherman, and leaveing them alone just seems to be the right thing to do. BUT! All bets are off if they rat me out, or like in some of your cases, fire on me. Then there will be no mercy. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/784.gif

Bring your 20mm C/30 in case your mates are being nasty and, er.. if you should happen to get into trouble with <STRIKE>the coast guard</STRIKE> pirates.

This thread inspired me to make this pice of art. The wheather was too bad for guns, so I had to find alternative means of dispatching them English spies http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Nice pictures. I've not been very successful in deliberately ramming something so small. They seem to have some kind of magical instant reverse ability.

On the bigger subs which have AA guns on the same level as the bridge watch, I find it somewhat unrealistic that you cannot fire your AA guns. In reality, they are above most of the water so there really is no reason why you shouldn't be able to man them. The game links the deck gun and flak gun settings together to the weather, when in fact since they are two separate stations they should be handled differently.

I edit the files and bump up the wind speed for each boat. It is then up to my discretion as to whether it is too rough to man the guns. My criteria for this is how much water is coming over the deck gun area. If large waves are breaking over the deck, then I do not allow the men to use the deck gun. As the flak gun on the bigger boats is up high, I am more likely to allow them to use those AA guns.

cool man , good luck on the test, even though you dont need it , that 100 ton test is pretty easy , the test for the masters license wasnt all that great though, but the plotting is a tad bit different than on here... calculating sets and drifts, but the plotting test for the 100 ton was a breeze.
