When I look around in game I use the "free look" by pressing F9 and then use my hat switch to look. I programed a button on my joystick to center the view after I am done scanning. I saw in another thread a discussion of NewView. I am interested in NewView and how it is used. Can someone explain? Thanks.

newview is a free utility for enhancing your hat views- it allows the hat to mimic trackir- you can set up better control and pan deeper into your 6- get it from here

under game addons

some people like viewplus which is very similar but is also free so you can try both to suit

I'm curious; how is it different from the in game tracking with hat (f9 toggle between it and fixed snap views) and what advantages does it incur...?

it's a lot more flexible than the in game views.

However that flexibility comes with a price. It's a pain to set up correctly.

I also, I hate the head movement drift, anyone know of a way to turn that off?

go here for a newer version.
it would be nice if we can get some good Russian translation.

> Additional settings > Speed parameters > Joystick movement (View bindings) - X = 0
Joystick movement (View bindings) - Y = 0

To easy configure NewView use NV2Mouse (http://forum.sukhoi.ru/attachment.php?attachmentid=44852), he shows the movements of HAT without needing to open the game:
