Hi yall. Normally I just have fun offline with invulnerability. Now i'm starting to make myself vulnerable and whatnot. It's a lot more fun.

Today, in QMB I had 3 B239 squadrons against TB-3s and MiG 3Us. I was in the Tb-3. Well, the MiGs acutally LOST, and so one fighter began to harass my squadron as the rest went to base. He managed to get my first engine smoking. This is where it was fun. I felt the adrenaline as I rushed to use the fire extinguisher and feather the prop. I couldn't keep up my plane, so I crash landed. TOO MUCH FUN!!! I just love emergency situations like those! Prob is I can't have every situation exactly how i want.

That was fun!

I know what you mean Godsock. I was online the other day in the TB-3 and as closed in on the target the enemy fighter's found me. It was just as much fun fighting them off as it would have been to get a good bomb hit on target. I didn't survive the run but man it was fun trying. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Thanks yall. I can't wait to see if some other bombers or something come out. I'd like to be able to be the fighter, then switch to the bomber. But that's not possible. Oh well . http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

It's still fun? Do you guys have any breath-taking stories of crash-landing bombers?

Just as an overly obsessive and annoying side note, I don't think its possible to feather the props on the TB-3, as they are fixed (solid wood). Regardless, great to see more bomber pilots getting interested.

Still my most breath taking story (you probably had to be there, but here it is anyway) is when FB was first released, and flying an online coop with my squadmates in the He-111. We had just enough to fully crewed out 2 He-111s for a night mission over Leningrad. As we approached and the search lights lit up, the flak began popping all over, we were attacked by Mig3s. The ferocity and intensity of that flight was simply amazing. We lost a number of crew to enemy fire, an engine fire due to flak, and were forced to dive out of formation to try and extinguish it (it did go out!). The flight home was extremely tense as we labored to get home, our pilot (ZG77_Spectre) constantly updated us on our situation, which was extremely poor. We made it to withing a few km's of our base but were forced to belly land as we had to much fuel and not enough power to make a safe landing on the airstrip.

Awesome...anyone else?

I just had the perfect situation in my TB3, but then the pilot got killed and it wouldn't lemme bail!!!

Those are both great stories!I have'nt had much flight time in the He-111 but I'm kinda suprised they don't have a "dump fuel feature?"It seems to have everything else!

I remember once being on Slammin's server, I was, as usual, flying my B-17G. Along with me, there were 3 others flying the 17 on my (red) team.

Now, on this special occasion, the formation of the 3 others was ahead of me and already over enemy territory (PTO map). I was hurrying to them, but sadly, the all got shot.
I was half way to the enemy base when a 190 attacked me. I immediately engaged heavy evasive maneuvers, and after a tough turn fight, the 190 got shot and crashed into the sea. I resumed my course, but when I reached the big mountain just at the coast of the enemy island, a La-7 attacked. Again, we battled in a turn fight. The La pilot was clever enough not to remain too close during our battle, but in the end, he also got killed.
I continued on and bombed the enemy base, destroying 2 players on the ground. A sI tried to get away, another 190 attacked, but after a relatively short fight, he was killed. I was flying back to base, passing over the big mountain now nearing the enemis coast line to get out of their territory, when another La-7 engaged me. We fought hard, and in the end, he got killed too.
Now, after 4 fighter attacks, my plane was leaking fuel like mad, some of the crew were dead, and numerous holes covered the hull. As I tried to finally run, I saw another fighter coming for me... I thought " that's it, I had a lot of luck, but this guy will kill me " ... when I saw the 3 other B-17s of my team coming in! It was the most beautiful thing I ever saw... 3 Fortresses flying in close formation, moving in at top speed. I passed by close under them, and as the enemy pilot saw the formation, he withdrawed from me, realizing that a bigger threat is now at hand.

I was flying back to base, at high alt (about 2500 - 3000) and was nearing the coast line of my base's island when suddenly, due to the leaks, I ran out of fuel. The engines stopped and my bomber became the biggest god damn glider of the day.
I tried to keep her in line, headed straight for the runway now, descending more and more towards the ground. I was close to the runway when I saw the ground coming very close, so I deployed the flaps... and they helped me to make it over the last few meters... I lowered the gear in the very last moment, and YES! I exactly touched down nice & soft on the very beginning of the runway!
I brought her back safely... that was the best run I ever made, I had more luck onthat single flight than I normally have in days.
It was even better than in the movies, where you only can watch, but this run was my very own adventure, my very own little legend, hollywood-style.
Never ever before or after that mission did I experience such tremendous luck, fun, thrill and happiness flying the B-17... and it truely was something of the stuff that legends are made of.

And before I get flamed about "too accurate gunners" - yes, on that day, they were very accurate, but still within normal parameters, believe me, I did my part on getting them in a good position to shoot.

Overall, I destroyed 6 planes on that run, and damaged one (the last attacker that wiithdrawed), it was a very succesful run, very intense from the first minute to the last.

I fly the Heinkel a lot online, it's so much fun, especially when you get all hell beaten out of you and still make it home. I wish there were more multi engined bombers in the game, I really do.

I am REALLY hoping that Battle of Britain will even things up. I would be in gaming heaven if, in addition to the Spit, Hurri and 109s we could fly all manner of Sterlings, Blenheims, Heinkels and Dorniers.

Cheers,

SSS

To all who fly bombers online - SALUTE!

I don't because I still am aspiring to be a competant fighter driver and have my hands full with that.

My favorite servers are the ones with the formations, of B17G's. I flew a while back on a server that had a squadron of B17 drivers. These guy's were awesome! They coordinated well, flying close formation and literally doused 12-20 fighters per mission. I had only one success that I was really happy with in an A9 with a head on shot to a Fortress cockpit at 12 o'clock high approach (then of course got greedy and tried another pass, stupid only got 40 points, should have landed). Also that night had one good shot with WGR21. My favorite weapon, but very, very hard to use against all bomber types in all conditions.

Anyway, I must say that I think the B17G defensive fire is modeled extremely well. The thing that people should keep in mind is that German fighter aircraft almost never encountered less than several multiple flights of B17G's and B24's (think like 400 - 800 aircraft in a raid). Due to time/attention constraints it is'nt possible (nor probably desireable) to actually simulate reality in few facets in FB. Strategic bombing in a B-17G is like a 9000 - 10000 meter thing, often with high and low fighter escort. Online you guys are forced into using your big ships as tactical bombers without the benefit of 20 - 800 buddies in bombers and another several hundred escorts and U.S. 9th AF is vulching German airbases. Not so much fuel left in 109G after climb to 30000 feet from the ground. It should be this hard to kill a Fortress. I find it an interesting challange...

Thanks again Bomber People, you bring an enjoyable and challange aspect to the game and signficantly increase IL2-FB dimensionality.

But the curve into seventy Fortresses lets the sins of ones life pass before one's eyes. And when one has convinced oneself, it is still more painful to force to it every pilot in the wing, down to the last young newcomer."

Hey Future,Great story the way you describe your decent I felt like the belly gunner seeing the ground coming up 'to fast'then seeing the flaps come down& just giving the big girl enough lift to make a nice touchdown! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gifThanks for sharing! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
