Yea, the Vichy...that's about it.

I would argue the French soldier fought well, but of course were outmatched by the new form of warfare called "blitzkreig" which depended on close working relationship between German aircraft/armour and French generals and politicians. The Poles fought too. And they fought with distinction using French planes in Battle of France.

Yes, the French faught in WW2 - against the Americans! I read a book about it. The book was printed long before the recent French/American problems we've been having.

It was in North Africa. The Americans lost over 800 men killed by the French! Eight hundred men, soldiers, husbands, died in combat against the French. The Americans were trying to get them to surrender but they refused. The Americans even tried some daft idea of fireworks to spell out "surrender" in French on the beach. They succeeded in only illuminating their own position and artillery zeroed in on them.

Latest joke: If you want to find a Frenchman just follow a German.

The french campaign was not a walk in the park for Luftwaffe. French fighters shot down 350 enemy planes. some 80 during the "strange war" between 3rd September and 10 May. And I think that had the French better strategy(they held their best fighters in reserve, Luftwaffe put all their Me109 in the fight) who knows... by the way Moelders was shot down in the french campaign...

great fun !!

I wish my fellow citizens of the USA would stop to think before slandering the memory of the French airmen and soldiers who got themselves killed fighting against Nazi Germany, both before and after the 1940 campaign. The poor preparation and political ineptitude of their leadership wasn't their fault. The young men who died in often second-rate aircraft didn't shirk their duty, and it wasn't they who designed the Maginot Line and the strategy that went with it.

Show some respect for these men. They earned it.

their popularity nowadays is a poor reflection of the work they did in ww2.
does this mean no-one has even "started" modelling it? :- i hoped there might be one in the pipeline ( if only to fly in the far future)

also found out something cool about the beau the other day - aparrently the 6 mg's could be reloaded by the navigator/observer in flight - if we ever get one, i hope that will be modelled - would be damn useful!!

I think you'll find that's the 4 cannon, in early
versions when the Hispanos were fed by 60 round
drums. In later versions they were belt fed.

Some versions of the Beaufighter (Mk. 21) had 4 .50s
rather than the 6 .303s.

Also the USAAF used them in Italy (not anywhere else
AFAIK) in limited numbers - maybe 2 squadrons.

The local airbase here was home to a Free French Halifax
squadron in WW2. There's not much left of the original
field, as it was levelled and reworked as a USAF
B47 station in the 1950s. You had to be pretty brave
to fly in Bomber Command in WW2, especially in Halifaxes,
given the loss rate.

Hmm, are we now blaming all the occupied countries of world war 2 for not figthing? That's not fair, as far as I know Poland fought, so did Tjekkoslovakia, France, Yugoslavia, Greece, Denmark, Norway, Holland, Belgium and others alike. The only reason they were overrun so fast were becourse Germany was prepared and they weren't, but they did fight.
But for how long can you fight a superiour enemy and how much will you sacrifice to stall him? Becourse these battles couldn't be won only stalled for some time.

Oh yeah, and there were actually figthing between the Germans and the Sirius Patrol in north-east Greenland during the war/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Ever heard of the Normandy-Neman Air Regiment? French pilots who made over 5,000 sorties, and shot down over 270 enemy aircraft on the Eastern Front. In the end they received the Soviet Order of the Red Banner and Alexander Nevsky. 4 of the 83 pilots became heroes of the Sovite Union. They flew variations of the Yakovlev aircraft, and at the end of WWII the USSR gave France a few Yak 11s and Yak 3s (if I remember correctly). Oh and France just returned one of the Yak 3s to Russia (museum).

You're right about that, but Russia had something none of the countries I mentioned had... The largest landmass of any single country (sorry, the Sovjet Union had) and they could withstand the fast moving war the Germans used.

One more thing, if the US had stayed neutral during the war, then, in my opinion, Sovjet would have conquered the Germans singlehanded./i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Nic: your grandfather fought with the Free French from 39 to 45? Funny, I didn't think the French were conquored till 40.
What, was he merely planning ahead like the rest of the French Army?
The fact is, there is a romantic notion of what the French (and the populations of many other occupied countries for that matter) did during the war, and it does not jive with the truth. Whether it was the embracing of the Vichy ideals, turning over Jews, or merely co-existing with the Germans the French were hardly paragons on nazi opposition.
Don't feel bad...many a country are still in denial about the roles its peoples and armies played.
No use getting emotional about something you can't change.
