Truth be known, with the AAA stuff (and other) and the beta being out, who really cares.

Hate to say it but Oleg and Co appear to have lost (in public anyway) any thought of 4.09, and who can blame them.

The modding community has taken this farther than was even planned, and long may they continue with it.

You could have added another vote, '4.09, bothered?'

All I would like is the dedicated server patch.

What about the people who have remained loyal and are waiting for the legit 4.09?????

Credit to you gents, but I think Mammoths will walk in the Sahara before 4.09 http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Point is for me, I am very happy with the beta but think it's a shame not to have the server patch or the winter map, regardless of the works of art some of the modders are doing.

Dream on! The mods are fun but they are zip compared to BOB.

Agreed. I'm afraid Oleg & Co. may have been put off by the triumphalist attitude of some segments..

OK, you can roll eyes if you want BUT no-one [unless you can tell me any different and have inside knowledge we don't have] has seen SOW ,knows if it will be released and if the average computer would be able to handle it if it was released.
We are in a world wide recession ,computer games and luxuries just may be bottom of the list.
The mods haven't been out very long and if they are capable of doing a good job before SOW comes out [2009 ish,]and there's still 2008 to go [so more mods and development time] well alot of people may think along the same lines.
I wonder how many people will hold back buying SOW so they find whether their computer will run it,what bugs will be found and patches required to make it usable.
I will probably buy SOW but i won't be in such a hurry if the mods can fill the gap and allow purchases and decisions to be made when it suits.
If SOW is as good as it is fanfared to be then of course the mods won't compare, but the gap between F/B and SOW is being bridged to an extent that the urge to "leap" from one to the other isn't as vast.

Proof will be in the pudding so to speak, lets see if SOW is ever released [i truly hope so] but don't underestimate the effects good mods could have or should i say don't overestimate what SOW could be.
SOW should be better than modded F/B by a long long way but costs of computer upgrades and other stuff and real world problems could make the mods a very viable option.
People who can afford it will get it but those struggling now will obviously be looking for alternatives.
As pointed out above looks like Oleg has given up on 2.09 lets hope that SOW carries on.
Don't bury your head in the sand and assume that SOW will be the holy grail.

When Rise of Flight is released, MG will suddenly trot out 4.09 and the dedicated server to help keep themselves in the spotlight.
Makes sense I suppose.

ROF released some screenies of a european city today, and its very well done. Best I've seen yet in any combat flight sim. Hopefully we will be flying this sim in a few months. It should make the wait for SOW much more bareable.

There are some great mods being produced and I continually fly CanonUK's beta BOB map with Compans textures. I'm sure the final product will look great at elevation but I feel they have taken a step back with photo realistic cities for fps reasons.

To suggest that a modded IL-2 will hold its own against SOW's new engine is putting your head in the sand. I doubt there will be a problem with bugs in the initial release as IL-2 had very few in comparison to its complexity, most updates where minor bug fixes and additions.

There is no doubt you will need a very highend system to run SOW with alot of bells and whistles enabled BUT you will be able to adjust the options to suit your machine. I'm sure even a disabled SOW will still completely outclass any IL-2 mods. Initially the IL-2 series will have the advantage of far more theaters. Personally I would sooner fly in a immersive SOW world than a modded IL-2 with all its limitations. IL-2 will lose many of its modders to the more mod friendly SOW series.

*shrugs*

I never go online anymore and in fact skin more than fly these days so the only thing missing for me from the Beta is the winter map. The beta sound dll's do not work with my Athlon processor but as i said I rarely fly so who cares.

I am happy to wait.

As my interests lie in historical research and skinning I doubt i will ever bother with mods or with SOW. The mods do not interest me because they mainly seem aimed at the "cheap thrills new plane every day give me atomic cannon" brigade. SOW does not interest me because I am very much a trial and error skinner and SOW is going to be far to hard to skin for unless you really know your stuff.

I'm actually thinking the other way around here; the basic skinning will be easier IMO since the models will actually become dirty and weather themselves so basically all you have to do is put out a basic clean paint scheme and the game will do the rest http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

Really? I was under the impression the original skinner would have to create the various light/medium/heavy weathering layers for the game to overlay as the aircraft got "older" in game ? But I actually have no idea that was just an assumption on my part.

I have not heard anything about the graphics glitches on some machines with the beta and the weird problem where the sound DLLs caused the game to crash on slightly older Athlons being fixed yet.

Unlike the mods (where if a mod works on most users machines its good enough to go) an official patch needs to actually work for nearly all users.

I think Xmas 2008 is somewhat optimistic http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif It would be nice though.

Some of these same people put their hand on their heart a few short months ago and said SoW by Christmas. I wouldn't place much store on their predictions.

I never quite understood the push for more and more late war rare prototype "uber" planes when we were missing historically significant planes like the Fokker D.XXI, Swordfish and Avia B534. We do not even have Wellingtons and Lancasters.

Then again I would be more than happy to strap on a virtual flying helmet and jump in a Gloster Gamecock or Bristol Bulldog so I am biased.
