View Full Version : THinking of offering a complete server image.

I'm thinking of building a .torrent file with a COMPLETE IL-2 dedicated server image. This software is freely available but no-one has ever bothered to release a complete image. Would there be trouble with the legalities of this?

I've had quite an experience just trying to set up a server, because not all the files are posted or the files are broken and there is no viable route to determine how to make the server run. If a complete image were available these experiences could be avoided.

Let me know if this is possible.

I think you should explain this in a different way, it makes no sense to me, maybe not to anyone else either. What is a 'server image'?

Also you will have better luck asking in the Community Help forum, here:

What a good idea!

Great idea, let me know if you do this, I'd like to download it. I've had similiar problems trying to get the myriad of patches, many that are corrupt, to build a server.

I'm interested in this. I want to set up a server, but I gave up trying to find files that aren't corrupt.

This is an excellent idea, Patches. You could just make it a self-extracting archive, like the patch downloads.

A complete 4.08 dedicated server is around 2.3 gigabytes, which is a whopping download, but should work as a torrent.

I will just add, though, that all the required downloads and patches for getting a server are still available. You might need to go to a few different sites to get them all, and there is a workaround for the corrupt 2.04 download, which I have posted here:

I'd happily be a quasi-permanent seeder for it on torrent.

Ok. That's done. With the .torrent tracker I use, though I cant do a self-extracting archive so you'll need winzip or something similar.

Anyhow I published a .torrent on torrentbox.com and if you contact me at Twitch303atComcast.net I can give you the .torrent file itself.

If you search torrentbox.com you should be able to find it's called 1946_Dedicated_Server. Also I put together a dedicated seed for the torrent on some rackspace.

I'll need to download it again and test the archive, but please notify me of any file troubles.

Basically Major, what this means is that I have compiled all of the files from all of the self extracting archives into a working and tested server 'image' which is another way of saying 'files'. I did that and then I published it so that the files would be accessible. As far as I understand, theres nothing wrong with doing this, although tracker sites for this type of file publishing, called a torrent, are usually a little seedy. I found the best one I could but my advice would be to set up a tracker specifically for Ubisoft files and to make a distribution which works for the server files.

At any rate, there is a misconception. And that is, most people think torrent files are illegal, theyre not. Its like any technology though, and people tend to abuse it unfortunately. However most good linux distributions like gentoo linux http://www.gentoo.org use this technology legitimately, which is what I belive I am doing. I could help with any informaiton related to setting up a tracker for large files as an official source for Ubi downloadables, only need ask.

Anyhow I did go ahead and post the image, my only regret is that it might make developing a dedicated server much easier, and that increases my compettition for the
-=TimeMachine=- server. ha-ha.

Please notify me if any of the Forum people have a hard time understanding this.

I do have an unused account floating around that i set up originally to download my photos from, on this site

http://rapidshare.com/

you could if wanted send me the file and i could upload it onto it, then people could use the free download link to access it.

Patches30

Sure, Taylortony that might work except it's a 1.4GB archive. I broke it into 650MB sections so that you could back it up to CD if you wanted, but a direct download may not work. All that aside I will be offering the archive as a direct download probably from http://gss.jointtacticalcommand.com
and from my file archive at http://www.coolermod.net/files
But it will take some time to load, I'll let you know when a non peer-to-peer solution is available.

Also the first attempt at this failed because my file archiver died and didnt tell me the archive was bad. I'm working on a more secure archive now, but it will be about an hour before it's published again. I'm sure the folks at ubisoft have had the same experience, (RE: bad 2.04 server archive).

Anyhow, the offer still stands, I just have to make a new file for publishing, one hour tops.

Great idea man!
What about hardware though? What OS is in the image and how portable will it be?

It's not an OS image, it's just a zip of the absolute latest dedicated server version. This means you don't have to start with version 2.04 and download all of the incremental patches.

I doubt there will any legal issues with that. This should have been done a while ago. Needless to say that if it was up to me, full server install should be placed on bonus DVD or something.

I have some spare web space, and bandwidth available too.

Maybe you could burn it onto a DVD, I and others would pay the cost of time, materials, and postage.

I'm glad to report that everything is working. I downloaded and tested everything with a seperate computer, and the image is A-ok. Also things should speed up now with the amount of community support behind this. It would be good to make a DVD, but you know, I allocated half of a MB per second to the dedicated, and theres a lot of seeds now. Things are good and the downloads are faster.

Although, the archive was built with winace which is an .ace archiver, it achieved the most secure archive I could build.

On sourceforge.net there is a program called torrentflux, which with any PHP enabled system you can seed a torrent indefinitely.

Anyhow, everything works. I'll be available for help configuring the server, it already has little things like dotranges and stuff set, I would appreciate it if the existing missions are only used for load-testing, as that is what they were adapted for. But I wont make an objection if people adapt these missions which are in the 2 folder under missions/net/dogfight/

Ok! well I am pleased this worked out. Thanks all.

This is all fine and dandy.
I appreciate all the efforts put into it, but my request for a DVD version is motivated by three facts

1) i have 56K at home (i live in the country with only 14 people within a mile of my house so no-one will put anything faster)

2) I get high-speed Internet at work (and it's in my contract to use it on my breaks)but because it's work - NO TORRENTS

3) I want to give a server a try, but even though I only have 56K I'm an MCSE and run a 2003 server at home, so it's only for my son and me. Hardly enough for me to do the Full Monty if it's not practically handed to me.

Thanks for the effort - it is appreciated.

Well, ideally I would say yes, I can put together a DVD. However I do not have the resources to manufacture such a disk, and I dont have the authorization nor do I have the store from which you could aquire the disk and pay the cost of shipping. This type of thing would need to be worked out with Ubi or 1C: Maddox games, not because the software issues but because of the cost of producing a DVD. Such a cost would require authorization to produce and arbitrate. In a perfect world I could say sure, here's a DVD just tell me where to ship it, but it's not a perfect world. There were risks associated with producing the torrent image, a loophole really. But producing a DVD costs money, whereas the torrent image only cost the time it takes to produce the file. I apologize but I don't currently have the resources to do that.

On to other things, this image was a current dedicated server called -=TimeMachine=- on hyperlobby, and it remained to be configured the same way. At this point I need to ask if anyone would rather have a file which contains only the self-extracting zip files as they were produced. The drawback to this is well, that it has not been compiled and tested and there are no guarantees that it will assemble, However if I did that I could archive the archives and make smaller files, and maybe just possibly find some bandwidth to accept the 56k connection. If that's a solution let me know, but so far as is logical, I don't think any new deliverables will be produced by Ubisoft on this project in terms of a DVD, I think theyre by now setting thier sights on the release of Storm Of War. In short terms, I think what you're asking isn't possible.

Hi!

Is there any update on this? I tried to download it just then but there were no seeds or peers http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

Can this PLEASE be put back up, or better yet on some web space?

I cannot figure out how to get a proper server, the patch hosted on UBI is just some files with no executable... useless!

Thanks.
