View Full Version : How does one start a multi-engined plane?

I managed to do it online once(by luck), but I still haven't figured it out(this is when "separate engine start" is chosen in the difficulty settings guys).

Toggle engine, toggle right, toggle left, select all, select #1, select/unselect #1, etc. etc. What the heck is the correct sequence of this mess, and then once they are all on, how do I control them all with one throttle?

Thanks. The search is useless.

i think:

i map 'select engine' to 1,2,3,4
'Select all engines' E

for starting:
press 1 then I (ignition) which starts one
then 2 which UNSELECTS 1 and SELECTS 2 and I to ignite
and so on
to throttle i press E and then throttle

i think this is right it is a bit annoying how engines are selected when the key description does not mention 'unselect'
it is also easy to get in a mess especially when you forget which are selected and which are not

Well, I started by reading up in the manual and doing the tutorials.

But it's actually pretty simple. You need to bind keys to specific engines. I use CTRL1 - CTRL 4, and CTRL 0 to control them all at once.

Engine start is easy:

CTRL1 - I

CTRL 2 - I

CTRL 0 - apply the prop pitch, or what have you.

Be aware that all the keys for seperate engine start are user defined.

Toggle engines one by one and make sure throttle is at zero (nasty shock in 262 on engine start at full throttle) then hit the all engine key (user defined) and firewall that throttle/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

If CEM is on you must start them one by one. Select one engine, start it, unselect it, select & start the other engine. Then you reselect the first one & you have control over them both. Am I making any sense? - got kinda lost there myself but you get the point right?

Thanks all. I figured it out finally, but the quick response is appreciated anyway.

As for Icarus, I didn't see it in the manual(I did see that it stated "you must start them separately"), but I must confess I didn't run the tut's. That'll learn me /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

For what its worth I only read game manuals when I have a problem I cant figure out from "hands on."

And I never touched the IL2 or FB tutorials (are there any for FB)/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Also useful are the "select left hand engines" and "select right hand engines" keys. As anyone who has tried to taxi a tb-3 will attest, brakes + rudder alone does not make for easy turning. Being able to throttle up the left hand side as a unit and throttle down the right makes the beast a bit less ungainly on the ground.

Ditto the 262 /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

I use an exploit to turn the TB on tight runways. Taxi at full throttle all engines, bank it over as the ailerons take effect and drag the wing tip lightly on the ground, it doesn't do any damage and enables near 90 degree uberturns (for a TB anyway)

Even massive bomb loads are safe from scuffing due to the wing size.

Just be gentle!
