View Full Version : How low can you fly?

UberPickle
01-03-2006, 12:19 PM
Well, I've been experimenting in the qmb and I have been able to fly down to 20 feet above land for 30 seconds in a Me-262 and wound up having to pull up real quick. Another experiment was when I was fighting some Hurricane MKII while I was flying a MiG-3 and we both wound up playing rolling scissors right above the forest (bad idea I know, but we all know what happened to me).

So, my question to all of you is: How low can you go and how low have you gone for an air to air kill?

When I landing I go pretty low...

Low enough to prang my prop http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

You don't glide long over water http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif I had a nice swim home http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

was in a rolling scissors in a P-40 once, over the sea, and at one point my wingtip went into the water, but I didn't go in. The guy I was flying against was on comms with me, and he was like "wow, that was cool, you skimmed your wingtip through the water!"

I've also skimmed the water with my landing gear in a J8A and a Cr-42 and a TB-3.

I'm with Tooz--I've skimmed water with the wingtip (and pretty sure I did the same on the ground once in an Me 109, but didn't SAVE, so no proof). And by the way, ever since I got Track IR, I LOVE getting into a low alt rolling scissors. What a BLAST, although I often auger into a hillside or the forest, lol!

It is possible to touch the ground with your prop in IL2 without damaging it, but it requires a very steady hand.

I would post a screenie, but I've been without my joystick for nearly a month http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/cry.gif

If this thread lasts any length of time on the front page you'll be seeing lots of screenies and tracks of this sort of flying, both combat and staged. I've lost count of the times I've cleared by IL2 tail by flying so low that the B&Z pursuit crashed into the ground http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/59.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/34.gif

Once I used to be impressed by real low flying, but since I`ve had rudder pedals i`ve found low flying surprisingly easy. I`ve flown under bridges quite calmly and easily these days.

In combat I often near kiss the ground in attempts to escape enmy aircraft. In one case i chased down a damaged 109 (online) so low, that when it exploded on the ground, my Wingman though I`d gone up with it! I thought i had too. I`m not sure, but I have a suspicion that the blast from the exploding enemy actually buffeted me from striking the earth!

In TB-3 v TB-3 dogfights I'll always try and knock my gear off by clonking the ground with it. I think that I can get some extra speed and less drag that way, but it might be just wishful thinking. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Cheers!

Heres a challege for every one!

You must be flying a carrier aircraft and you must have the landing hook dragging in the water whilst flying under a bridge for 30seconds!

http://s93008310.onlinehome.us/images/pf/corsair07.jpg

I've managed to get even lower during a dogfight in a P39, where I scraped the belly on the ground but was just nose high enough to not ding the prop. No damage done to the plane, but I was definitely on the ground for a moment.

Unfortunately, I no longer have those pictures online, but I'll see if I can dig them up someplace.

Back from two weeks in deepest Somerset for xmas I was very keen to get back into the old cockpit, and being overly very keen in a P38 to follow a Hs-129 I thought was trying to dive away I got caught in the explosion as it hit the ground! I swear i got some damage from that, though the issue is muddled by the fact one of his friends took a potshot at me shortly afterwards and i may have picked up some holes from him too....

Press Print Screen (usually while watching a track play back, which also lets you pause and manipulate the camera), then open Windows Explorer and go to C:\Program Files\Ubi Soft\IL-2 Sturmovik Forgotten Battles and in the root of that directory you will see a file called 'grab0000.tga'. Each time you hit print screen a new file will be made, incremented by one (grab0001.tga, grab0002.tga, etc).

Those are raw output and quite large. Go into your favorite image editor, resize, and save as a jpg to cut down on both diplay size as well as file size (and rename it).

Then upload it to a webhost (<- the tricky part) and post it to any forum you like.

One thing to remember is that the naming starts at 0 every time you restart the application, so existing grabs will be overwritten unless you get them out first.

Start with plenty of altitude, pull up vertical (make sure you're rudder is completely coordinated and your elevator is totally neutral), let it coast to a stop, set throttle to zero then fly the tailslide. I could never manage more than a couple of hundred metres before the nose flipped around, but some of the better pilots could do amazing things. Ride of choice for this was the I-16.

Got some new ones for ya!

About a year ago before I was online at home, I'd pop round to Bear_Boradins place to LAN party with him and his family; his dad and sister would often join us.

We had been trying to replicate the Breitling fighters, but had been well and truly knackered out by the strain of close formation flying and decided on a whirly go round in some spits. the story starts with the tail chase

1) I'm leading in the MkVb so that the other two hopefully won't have too muchtrouble keeping up - BBs dad is lagging with BB (Paddy) just behind me as I drop between the trees for a bit of fun...
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a52/tomtheyak/LANP01.jpg

As we cruise down the runway at 0ft I'm thinking that we must look pretty good and hoping the Pops is keeping up..
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a52/tomtheyak/LANP02.jpg

Unfortunately Pops misjudges the trees and pays the price; aerial horticulture is a risky undertaking!
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a52/tomtheyak/LANP03.jpg

Knowing exactly where he'll spawn I lead BB around low so that we'll be hidden under his nose as we run in and hopefully we'll scare the poo outta him as we roar over his canopy at silly low level; hehehe I'm a mishievous little sod!
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a52/tomtheyak/LANP04.jpg

As you see I'm lifting the nose to clear him by a couple of feet (don't wanna take it too close; crashing makes me grumpy) and I assume BBs gonna follow suit...
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a52/tomtheyak/LANP05.jpg

Seems Bear_Boradins got other ideas tho... Blimey!!! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a52/tomtheyak/LANP06.jpg

I mean, thats just ridiculous! I cant look!
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a52/tomtheyak/LANP07.jpg

And yet SOMEHOW HE'S MADE IT!!!!! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a52/tomtheyak/LANP08.jpg

There's a loud expletive burst from down the hall as Pops gets the poo loosened and he suddenly shouts;

"Hey, my engine stopped.... it won't start again either...."

I'll leave you guys to figure it out!! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/34.gif

Someone told you how above. Save your flight as a .ntrk by hitting quick record when you fly it. Using "Q" will make sure the mission records accurately.
Then, before saving screen shots go into the settings for your graphics card - if you have an NVIDIA - and set AA to 8 and AF to 4. This will eliminate jagged edges ("jaggies" according to Danjama) in your stills.
Next, open the game and watch the track. When you hit a point you want a still of hit Pause, get the angle you want, then hit print screen on your keyboard. Remember, with your AA & AF set that way your FPS (Frames Per Second) will be very low and there will be a second or so delay between hitting Pause and the actual pause, so think ahead.
After you have saved all the shot you want exit the game.
Go to My Computer.
C drive.
Program files.
Ubisoft folder.
Forgotten Battles folder.
Therein you should find by scrolling down a series of files named "grab0000" "grab0001", et cetera.
These will only open with Internet Explorer as they are .TGA files. Create a folder for them then move them from the FB Folder as they will be over-written when you save images from the next .ntrk.
You will need to acquire a program such as Amber Image Converter which can turn the .TGA files into JPEG / Paint or other image types.
Voila.

Two options:

1) Google it!

2) Get Irfanview from here: http://www.tucows.com/preview/194967

Just click the box that represents your OS and download. when installing it will give you an option of which files to automatically associate with Irfanview; choose TGA and you'll know what to look for in the Il2 Sturmovik folder because it'll have the Irfanview (little red animal) icon.

You can then save as Jpeg, bmp, whatever.

You'll then have to upload to a host site cos Ubi.forums won't hold images. I use Photobucket (http://photobucket.com/) but there are others.

Upload your image to that site host then look for the link below your image that says IMG in its title and copy and paste that link into your post.

Voila! You should have an image up in the thread!

Yes, very odd. They e-mailed me a link to download and install the full version, and I downloaded and installed .... yet the tag did not go away. The version still functions, so it cannot be the trial version. Mayhaps I did something wrong.

On another note: While writing the exorcism for that other thread full of babbling loons my computer crashed and I lost a lot of good work http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_mad.gif. Most frustrating.

01-09-2006, 05:34 PM
The "jaggies" are the jagged edges along the edges of objects on your stills. They can be removed by going into your NVIDIA settings. You will find that by right clicking on your desktop and selecting:
Properties.
Then:
Settings.
Then:
Advanced.
Click on the NVIDIA tab and this will open the settings.
Set the top bar to 8x
The lower bar to 2x or 4x

Your computer will ask if you're sure, tell it yes.

Do NOT try to actually fly at those settings. Your FPS (Frames Per Second) will be very low and will make trying to fly an aircraft very difficult. Use these settings when you are going in solely to save screen shots.

The problem is, I discovered, that the low FPS makes it hard to catch certain things in your stills. I am going to post some tailhook dragging shots later, in the clear ones you'll find few to no sparks. The low FPS causes the playback to miss them. To show the sparks I had to use normal settings.

But, overall you get much, much better images on your stills with the AA & AF set like that (AA is the top bar, AF the lower bar).

That was a lot harder than I thought it would be. That was the fourth attempt. Each of the three failed attempts I had been certain I had been dragging that hook through the water; my altimeter at points had indicated that I was BELOW sea level! The best I had managed was a quick dip here and there.
After the 2nd I realized I was going too fast at between 120 and 130 knots. The 3rd I was going 100 knots. That was still too fast. 80 - 90 knots got it.

Slo, look at the difference between the 4th pic and the rest. Those are jaggies.

Stackhouse25th
01-09-2006, 07:19 PM
Low enough to the point the plane bounces on the prop. IE, when you're that low the prop strikes the ground and instead of bending you bounce into the air.

S!

MLudner
01-09-2006, 07:26 PM
Are you sure it was off of the props, not the fuselage? I did that barnstorming a hanger in a P-39D2, but fortunately I was pulling up when it happened and so my props stayed clear of the ground even though the fuselage bumped.
I tried to catch the moment, but with the filtering up I could not manage it. I'm gonna catch it later on normal settings.

Could you post a shot, if you have it?

LStarosta
01-09-2006, 07:51 PM
Here's another idea if you wanna get rid of jaggies.

Boost your resolution really high and you can use less anti aliasing to achieve a similar effect as if you were using higher anti aliasing settings on a lower resolution.

The result?

Less jaggies, and you don't get a big framerate hit as if you were using a higher antialiasing setting.

Actually, on another thread I had asked that and someone answered that you set your graphics to OpenGL and Landscape to Perfect. Previous to that I had blundered into conf.ini file and set the Water to 4. Those Buffalo shots were on that setting. As you can see: no relflections.

I haven't been able to fly in that setting yet, but it caused a heavy slow down while mission building last night and I had to reset it to DirectX and Excellent. I'll try flying like that at lunch and see what happens.

My card is an NVIDIA Ge5200. Could it be I need a better one? My computer has a Gig of DDR SD RAM, which should be more than enough.

That's some really good flying http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Now, I tried OpenGL + Perfect.
No reflections.

I tried setting water to 3 or 4, but the config file will not save the changes. I tell it to save, go into the game and in QMB go skimming over the water.
No difference. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif
Then I exit and go back to the config file and it shows water 1. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif again.
Try telling to save from the file menu. No difference. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

Where do you get the map with all the hangars lined up? Is it a custom map or is it one of the original ones?

It's a custom map I made just for stunt flying http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

You should see the obstacle course I'm setting-up. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif It's already looking insane and it's not done yet.

Anyway, I just can't get reflections for some reason. I can get the water to look better, much better, but no reflections of my aircraft in it. I set water to 4, OpenGL, Perfect; all to no avail. Odd thing is that with normal setting I can see trees and what have you reflected near the shorelines, but never my aircraft. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

However, I get such a low FPS - even with a Gig of DDR SD RAM - that I can't fly using these settings. Screen shot taking only.

Could my graphics card be the problem?

I've gotten to -2 or 3 meters below the ground, but I can only sustain that for a milisecond until the aircraft fails. I do it often, tho!

Impressive - you guys are very good pilots indeed http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

But who was the joker who said that he always uses his secret wing and crewmember head removal button (or something like that) found only in his personal TB-3 to make it fit trough a hangar while doing stunts, and had a track of the "delicate" (his words) process too??? I LMAOd for a week after seeing that "stunt" I'm telling you... pure slapstick http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
