Hi,
I'm about to buy a Sony 23" widescreen monitor (1900 x 1200). Does anyone else have/use one and can PF run in widescreen mode to fill the screen ?

Thanks http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

My laptop 15.1 widescreen does not fill the screen. So, in your case you will have effectively something like a 21'' 4:3 screen.

even so the image will be distorted if not 4:3 unless the game officially supports it (Unreal Tournament does for example, Pacific Fighters does not). Still, nice to know there is such an option in the config file.

you better send that screen to me so i can evaluate it for you a few years http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

my current one gives me a quasimodo profile from trying to scan for enemies.. or seeing what i write for that matter.

17" screens placed on a table 1.5 meters away ain't ideal for chainsmoking flyers!

and as a proof of the lack of real or even adequate widescreen support for the time being:

If you watch a lot of movies i am sure that would be a good buy. But if you have only games or desktop applications in mind, buy a 4:3 monitor.

Not so. You can edit the resolution in the config.ini and set saveaspect=0 and you will get widescreen image on a widescreen monitor without "stretching".

I run a wide screen 30" LCD TV monitor and this is what my screen looks like. Note the pictures are not distorted.

Here is a normal aspect ratio SS to compare them to...

Yes, with saveaspect=0 you get rid of the "stretching" but not of the cropping.

Wrong again. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif I get 16x10 aspect ratio using 1280 x 768 or 16x9 aspect ratio using 1280x720. Did you look at the pictures? Note where the text is on the screen. If it were cropped to 4x3, or stretched, that text would be right at the edge in the upper right corner.

PF does not "officially" support widescreen, but it does indeed work. There are many people who can confirm this, but really all you need to do is look at the screenshots.

BTW... the pics above are 16x10... here is one that is 16x9 (the
creator of this skin is not known to me, I just liked it and it's a 353FG scheme)

I am surprised that you insist my friend. I do also have a 16:9 monitor as well as a 4:3 one. The game engine produces 4:3 graphics. To depict them in a full 16:9 screen you have to either crop or stretch. By choosing 1280x768 (or 1280x720) and saveaspect=0 you ask for a cropped image. By choosing 1280x768 and saveaspect=1 you ask for a stretched image. Swine explained that perfectly in his post http://www.jg51.net/forums/viewthread.php?tid=2662&page=1#pid22153.
To see the difference you need to have a screenshot of the same cockpit for the same zoom level in widescreen and 4:3. In widescreen you see less instruments.

I stand corrected... the image is enlarged to completely fill the screen, then the top and bottom are indeed cropped. Having said that, I still much prefer it, as it does enlarge the image and utilize the entire screen (in a useful way).

My apologies http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Here are comparison shots-
1024x768 wideview
http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b39/wilburnator/1024x768Wideview.jpg

and 1280x768 wideview

1024x768 gunsight view

1280x768 gunsight view

So I suppose it's a matter of preference. I peronally don't miss cropped part, I never even noticed it. Some people may feel that it's a restriction of their view. I use a hatswitch to look around constantly anyway, and if I venture into full real I have TIR.

For me, the widescreen experience on a big monitor just makes the simulation have that much more impact, and it allows me to utilize all 30 inches of my screen without distorting the image.

hu? i have a LCD display, native resolution is 1280*1024... the game at first use 1280*960...

I took too screens of a track, at the same moment, and surimposed them :

http://img221.imageshack.us/img221/1783/test25yn.jpg

The 1280*1024 image was included at half opacity.

First, you can see that the plane have the exact same size.

Second, you can see at the bottom, that you actually see more of the island on the biggest picture. Nothing have been cropped, i'm actually having an enlarged field of vision!!!

If you have a 30inch monitor and TIR the last thing you would care about is the row of instruments that are cropped out http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

It's the only reason why I haven't moved from my 22 inch 4-3 monitor to a 16-9 aspect LCD.

I hope they will support it natively in BOB.
