View Full Version : What did you do in IL-2 today?

This is the topic where you can brag about your IL-2 adventures, both online and offline.
Think of it as a pub where pilots and aces proudly tell their daring tales http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

You can include screenshots and/or tracks if you want.

I've been offline for the past 2-3 days, and today I tried out a few single missions and the Lightning Strikes P-38 campaign.

Single missions were nothing too special, one was a FW 190A rocket attack on flying fortresses at 7500 meters and was pretty hard since they had a mustang escort too, though I managed. I scored 2 B17's, one in the first head on pass which later crashed, and the other I took a wing off with the FW rockets, whatever their name is I can't remember. Soon I was chased by 2 or 3 mustangs and descended into a steep dive, but not before one of them destroyed my aileron controls. As I continued diving they didn't follow, but it came at a cost of my ailerons falling off (irrelevant since the controls were damaged anyway), and more importantly, my rudder falling odd too D:
Now with only elevators, I decided to gain some safe distance from the battle and belly land, using throttle and the torque to keep my wings horizontal I managed to ditch the 190 with no structural damage at all and am pretty proud of it http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif Hopefully the aircraft will be repaired since resources are precious in this time of war...

--
The other single mission was a Russian one with a very interesting setting, I was supposed to steal an FW-190A4 from a German base and fly it to our Russian base. The mission was very easy but I also got very lucky at the beginning. Taking off I was under fire from a vehicle that was directly on the runway and I almost crashed into it on takeoff. I turned directly towards 2 Bf-109's flying to intercept me and with a very lucky press of the trigger I damaged both of them in a head on pass! They were very close, one turned and the other went into a spin but recovered. Both were lightly smoking and both fell out of the sky within 10 minutes. I had no more trouble as Russian planes intercepted the other Germans that were following me farther away.

--

Now for something more serious, I did 2 P-38 missions from the Lightning Strikes campaign. The first mission involved recon and ground targets of opportunity in Normandy. As we took off and crossed the front I was immediately rather seriously damaged by a flak hit, with the left engine completely blown away and the right one giving off faint smoke and my fuselage full of holes.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v626/ROXunreal/il-2/p38damage0.jpg

However I felt able to continue despite this serious damage until later I noticed the other engine was losing power. In the end my speed was at a maximum of 250kmh and I couldn't gain more than about 200 meters of altitude. My wingmen were far ahead of me and completed the mission already, wrecking havoc on a car column. I made one low pass and was lucky enough to destroy a light tank and 2 cars. Feeling proud to have managed to contribute at all with a plane in such a bad state, I turned and headed home, hoping that my engine won't die at least before I cross into our territory. The engine held its own, and at 250 kmh I managed to get to safety and land.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v626/ROXunreal/il-2/p38damaged.jpg

The next mission objective was was to bomb a german arms depo. As soon as we crossed the frontline we were ambushed by 4 FW 190's. As the fight was some ways away and above from my position I continued at speed towards the mission objective to drop my cargo. Suddenly a damaged FW flew directly in front of me almost as if it was handing itself on a silver platter. I shot ti up and it crashed, and I continued to the mission objective. Dropped bombs and destroyed many cars and AA guns, but was again damaged with thick black smoke coming from the wing (P-38 has fuel tanks in outer wing?)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v626/ROXunreal/il-2/p38boom.jpg

Going home, I suddenly ran out of fuel.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v626/ROXunreal/il-2/p38damaged2.jpg

But thankfully I was over liberated territory and managed to land in a field just as my wing caught fire.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v626/ROXunreal/il-2/p38fire.jpg

Having still survived the mission and landed on our side of the frontline, the mission was still not regarded as completed since I apparently have to land at an airfield to be so, which makes no sense but ok. I quickly reloaded, destroyed the target again and didn't bother going home just ended the mission and Applied. (I have no instant success though I DO fly back home every time, except times like this where I actually complete the mission but still cannot advance because I didn't land at an airfield, even though the filed I landed was in our territory. So I just reload and do the mission again quickly because the previous one should have been valid anyway.)

These were my Il-2 adventures of the day, now it's your turn http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Was pretty happy with my 6 kills for one shot down and one death by P-39 flat-spin.

Until an F4F-Vs-A6m map came on and I got pwned, badly... Just too many good zero drivers about I guess, I need to practise my F4F a bit more.

Great pictures and story! Thanks for sharing! How are you enjoying the campaign?

Sadly nothing to share in the last few weeks. The only thing I've really done is I started it up and flew a Yak-9T around for a while practicing gunnery with the 37mm cannon against Ju-52s, Bf109G-6s and a few FW190s.

Managed to bring back a Beaufighter to base with one engine while wounded in the dynamic campaign. For the next mission, it turned out that I had spent time in a hospital and it was three years later; had me escorting the USS Indianapolis against enemy planes (flying Seafires this time) so that it could carry the atomic bomb. First really interesting mission I've played in a dynamic campaign (and the campaign ended after like 4 missions).

I was also flying a Dauntless in its dynamic campaign and managed to shoot down 2 Zeros with the rear gunner during the Coral Sea mission. Couldn't find the enemy ships but I did find two more Zeros at low alt when I was a couple thousand feet above them (where it said the ships were supposed to be) and shot them down, this time as a pilot.

Not to be totally Il2-less on Thanksgiving Day, I decided to do some more offline stuff for an hour or two tonight.
Not dogfighting as usual, but ground attack with the Jug and Lightning.

I played the 3rd mission from the RAF France campaign by FlatSpinMan. I wound up fighting off two bf109E-4s by myself, me in the Hurri mkI. I got the wingman first, they past below me and I came in on his 6 and got a good burst into his engine. I was able to get some hits on the leader a couple of times, but nothing life threatening for him, but he just climbed and came back down on me a couple of times, but I was able to maneuver away from him. I realized that I was fairly close to home, so I made a run for it. He chased me the whole way, diving on my 6 and then passing me, where I would take a couple of shots at him. He put a few holes in me, but nothing bad. Finally I made it to base, and the AAA opened up on him. Just then I heard a hit on my plane, and the engine started to over rev. I throttled back and then I see the "enemy aircraft destroyed" message. Looking back I see that he went down, most likely nailed by AAA but I got the credit since I nicked him a few times. Made a safe landing and called it. I love missions like that. I had to stay on the ball the whole time, or he would have hosed me.

Are you sure you have NO Instant Success to OFF? The game should allow to continue even if you don`t land on a runway (but land in friendly lines), as long as you don`t get killed. You can even still get captured or escape if you land in enemy terrtory. Have this Off. You won`t see the mission Success writing but it will still work.

It`s easier, but also MORE realistic. Win\win!

I realized the static campaigns that come with the game are crap, so I started a new dynamic campaign with the Lowengrin generator for the Bf-109G (2 I think, or 6). Had fun with that for he first mission, a ground attack mission where I was the only member of the squadron to score a kill.

Next mission was a patrol and I crashed into the ground chasing an already downed fighter. Not my smartest moment. But I think Im getting better.

At the moment, I'm doing Cracken's 'Thunderclaps wildly beat' Avia B'534 offline campaign (from M4T here (http://www.mission4today.com/index.php?name=Downloads&get=3786)).

http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae65/ajv00987k/il2fb2009-11-2715-31-19-39.jpg

I've only done five missions. Got some ground kills, but the only air kill I got (a bomber) was stolen by an AI pilot. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif The last mission was a big furball with I-16s. Hairy to say the least, since my engine cut twice through negative G - fortunately I managed to restart. I got off a few bursts at the Ratas, but didn't do much damage to any, and having run out of ammo had to evade one for a few minutes - no flak around to draw him into either. He gave up so I made it back to base, but messed up the landing. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/bigtears.gif

This is a nice campaign: plenty of veriety.

I've also been practising my helicopter landings in FSX. Not easy...

I flew an Il-2 night attack mission to Stalingrad, in PhilK's The Cauldron campaign (mission 5). After the political instruction lesson and a short briefing I was ready to go. There was really a war going on - I could see tracers above the city from the airfield even before taking off. It looked impressive in the dark.

After dropping the bombs, I sighted a Bf 110 attacking a pair of friendly U-2 recon aircraft, which had acted as target markers for us bombers (as described in the briefeing). I went after the enemy and shot him down, but had my engine blasted in the process by the rear gunner (surprise http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/53.gif ).

I took straigth course for home base. Soon the engine started to lose power, but luckily I could just make it for the nearest field, and landed without further damage.

I decided to give "Baptism of Fire" a try, a Seafire campaign during Operation Torch. First mission I ran into D.520s (as there are no D.520s in the game LaGG-3s were substituted) and managed to shot down 4 of them. I almost had 5, but ran out of ammo. Pranged on landing, though. I should have flown a few practice missions as it's been a while since I had to do carrier ops. But, I lived. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I have the habit of having several campaigns going at once, it seems I rarely finish any. I think I'll concentrate on a couple that are almost done, and go from there.

Had this in another post today and thought it fits better here.

Ok TO time 7:45, form up and head across the Chanell at apx 5000m. Flight is 8X 109's escorts, 4X 110's escorts and 20 HE-lll to bomb West Malling.
All going well as we near the coast just south east of Hastings. Ok there's the Spits, 2 flights of 4 to intercept escort. There above and about a klick out.
And thers the Hurricane's, two flights of three to intrcept the bombers. About level and 2 klick's west.
Everything is under controll and then the merge.

Now I know the Spits are going to engage me,
and not long into it Im hit bad. Oil on the screen and smoken gray, time to head for home. Split-S and run. Lots of things for the AI to shoot at. But as I head out over the Channel all 8 Spits and 3 of the Hurricanes as well are chasing my beatup 109 while the 111's are HAMMERING West Malling. 0 resistance.

I know they hit it hard cause as I was enjoying a cool dip I swiched views and watched the show.
Dont know how to take or post screanies or I would. Tried this same mission from the Brit side and while flying a Hurricane did not bad.

I think the bubble-top Spits look quite nice, though it somehow makes them appear less aggressive.

I've just run a QMB torpedo mission with a SM-79 on the Crimea map. For some reason, the ships weren't firing at me, and I managed to get a destroyer (I think) with a hit about 1/3 way back from the bow. I saw the explosion, but it didn't sink.

It was definitely Soviet, or at least flying a red flag, so why there was no flak I don't know.

I not a fan of clipped wing spits in general, but with the bubbletop it looks 'right'.

Its almost like the offspring of a manly spit thats mated with a femine mustang, flys that way to, my new favourite plane, although that title generally only lasts a few days, as i still have a lot of new goodies to work through...

I continued the Lightning Strikes campaign.

The third mission was air support for our tanks that got cornered off by the enemy's armor. I must have done this mission 20 times because I was sop frustrated that I couldn't score a hit with the bombs due to the poor weather and wind messing with my aim.

(this is from a failed attempt but it looks cool so I'm posting it)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v626/ROXunreal/il-2/p38tank1.jpg

In the end I did manage to destroy 2 tanks with my bombs, but with subsequent rocket passes I didn't manage to hit anything.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v626/ROXunreal/il-2/p38tank2.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v626/ROXunreal/il-2/p38tank3.jpg

Out of rockets, I decided to try the 20mm but to no avail, their armor was too thick. The other pilots from my squad managed to finish off the 3 tanks that were left and we went home.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v626/ROXunreal/il-2/p38tank4.jpg

--
Next mission was an interesting one, we were to scramble and intercept enemy bombers on route to our airfield. They were Ju-88 and Heinkels, with a 109 escort. I don't remember how it went down because I forgot to record that mission, but I think I managed to down one Heinkel and one Ju-88, and land with only minor gunner damage. Very exciting mission and very frustrating that I didn't record it.

--
We took off again for a mission specifically targeting the enemy's railway, we were to attacks any trains spotted. My squad finished off one train before I even got to it, the next train had AA cars and I was also under flak from the nearby town. However I managed to avoid serious damage and destroy the entire train with HVARs in 3 passes.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v626/ROXunreal/il-2/pc8train1.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v626/ROXunreal/il-2/p38train2.jpg

On the way home I saw one of our guys fighting against 2 Bf-110's. I managed to shoot up the first one enough for it to fall while avoiding the second one that was always trying to get on my tail. I would however always out turn him with the P-38's airbrake and continue shooting at the first one when my tail was clear.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v626/ROXunreal/il-2/p38train3.jpg

As the first one fell, I lost SA about the second one and it jumped at me from below, I could have been shot down or seriously damaged if I didn't evade at the last second. We made two head on passes but I turned away before he was in range because his guns were more powerful than mine and because of rather high probability of collision between two engined fighters. Then I got on his tail and shot him up with the .50 cal, and finished the job with the cannon at close range, he first caught fire and then lost a wing.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v626/ROXunreal/il-2/p38train5.jpg

On the way home I spotted another train in a town and destroyed its engine, but then ran out of cannon ammo and decided to call it. Landed home with minor damage.

Well, today, on the Queensland1 Server (by.sturmovik.de:21000, where atm the up1.8 is at a testrun (only Zuitis mds), i flew a mission in a zero, with bomb, as preparation for the attack on midway.
After a boring 80km flight, about 20 km before reaching midway, i was looking for an ai-flight of vals and zekes on their run to midway. I was flying at 5000m as i spotted a contact at my 3 o'clock northbound, just vanishing in a cloudbank.
Immediatly i turned north on a intercept course.
About 6 min. later i spotted the contact again, just topping the cloud cover at about 3500m.
In a lon shallow dive i positioned my zero at his deep six, it was a pby.
Closing fast i approached him from his low six and opened fire from about 80 m distance. Turning and climbing i avoided the ineffectual return fire from the waist gunners.
The right engine of the pby belched black smoke. The second, slashing attack, this time from the high 10 o'clock position sepeated the tail from the front fuselage.
There where 5 chutes.
Turning back toward midway i still looked for the vals and their escort, to no avail. As i still carried the bomb i went to deliver my load. When i approached midway i saw many tracers, the vals where there already.
Again in a shallow dive i approached the midway-airfield and dropped my bomb at a hangar, destroying 2 aircraft.
Recovering from the bombrun i saw 2 wildcats downing a val, i turned to attack. In a heavy turning fight i brought the first f4f down with a maneuver kill. The second had no chance and one of my last cannon rounds cost him his elevator control, splash two.
Having done my work i turned for my long flight home hwen after a few minutes i saw a wildcat on my deep six.
As i couldn't outclimb or outrun the f4f i turned to fight. There was the second wildcat, directly below me, trying to get a spray'n'pray hit in a vertical climb.
Had i waited just a few moments later he would have cought me unaware. A diving attack on the f4f i spotted first resulted in a pk. Ok, one left i thought as i followed him in a diving spiral.
Big mistake!!! When we passed 500m we where joined by 2 more wildcats.
The following turn'n'burn brought us to sea-level when i was out of speed, energy, ideas and luck. The last turn was too low and my left wingtip touched the sea. I died in the resulting cartwheel without being shot one time!!!
That was very exhausting and very much fun.

Flew on the Ubi coop tonight, a mixed bag of missions, though I actually got to land a P-39 in one (a rare occurance for me to last that long). Then the Luftwaffe turned up, so we took off again!

Most interesting mission I was flying a Mosquito. Came in low on an enemy airfield, and Bombed aircraft taking off. I turned to strafe them, got in another pass, then FW-200s appeared so we went after them instead. Got on the tail of one, filled it with holes, but as I passed over it, it rolled. Crunch!

A quick check for damage. One engine knocked right off, time to head home:

It was still reasonably flyable, though the remaining engine was smoking. Runway in sight...

... but losing power in the remaining engine. Not going to make it, so gear up...

... and belly land on the beach instead:

That is what I'd call a satisfying mission.

Had fun online again, after gunning down to 109's in my Mustang III (Italian Stallions map, Skies of Valour) I ran out of fuel and managed to glide over the lines and pull off a neat landing on a sealed road. Unfortunately when I pressed 'prtscrn' to take a screenie the bloody game crashed! I got some nice comments in the chat bar though.

Here's the screenie, I just discovered that it was on the clipboard! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

It's not really a good idea to use PrintScrn online, as it can cause freezing etc. I started an .ntrk save once I saw the Mossie situation above, and then took screenshots from a replay: easier to pick a good angle for the shot too.

Saving an .ntrk online should have less effect on how the PC behaves, from what I've been told.

Cool Mosquito story Andy http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I finished the P-38 campaign, it was easy but interesting and diverse. Most involved ground targets like cars and V1 launch sites, but there was an intercept mission and two fighter sweeps at 6000m. Favorite mission was an attack on an enemy airfield where I destroyed insane amounts of ground targets. First got some hangars and parked planes with the bombs, then shot some HVARs at AA and other parked planes, then after most AA was neutralized I took some time to destroy every parked aircraft I could see with my guns. After that I shot down 2 Bf109's on the way home, very productive mission! In two other missions one of my engines caught fire, one time I was very far into their territory so I feathered the prop and made a run for it hoping my plane won't explode. Amazingly the engine was on fire for a very long time but didn't damage my plane in any other way, I got to my territory and landed safely in a field. Did the same thing in the last mission though I was much closer to safe land.

After the last mission I counted all my kills. I had 14 aircraft and 84 ground targets, which were as follows: 34 cars/trucks, 13 rail targets, 14 parked planes (all in the airfield attack mission), 12 tanks, 9 anti aircraft and 2 artillery targets. Great campaign!

Am playing Storm Clouds now in a D9. First few missions were fighter sweeps and fighter bomber intercepts.

Last two missions: the first one was recon and ground targets of opportunity. I was flying alone on this one, and as I crossed the lines I downed an allied Storch (the pinnacle of skill!)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v626/ROXunreal/il-2/dorafi.jpg

and proceeded to destroy most of two truck convoys, which was not easy since there was much turbulence at low altitude.

Somewhere in the action an AA made my fuel leak but it was nothing serious. I proceeded to shoot down a recon spitfire and got its elevator in the first pass, blowing its engine a while later. (edit: or is that the fuel tank?)

Next mission was intercepting some A20's and Tempests attacking our industrial targets. The mission was failed before I even got there, but I managed to shoot down 3 tempests. I blew off the tail of the first one

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v626/ROXunreal/il-2/doratemp1.jpg

Gained some altitude and then came down on 2 tempests chasing a 109. I missed but a bit later made head on passes with both of them, destroying the second one's engine.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v626/ROXunreal/il-2/doratemp2.jpg

The leader and I then entered a very long and exhausting turn fight which was hard because the Tempest turned a bit better than my Dora. Finally after maybe 10 minutes I managed to dewing him with the MG as I ran out of cannon ammo.

This campaign is much harder, especially against Spits and Mustangs.

My current tally is around 17 or 18 aircraft, 9 trucks and 3 light AA tanks

Yeah, the Spitfire's fuel tank is in front of the cockpit. You can see a notice saying '100 octane fuel only' and a filler cap there on most good skins.

Very funny, Owl.

I'd be careful though, the guys at AAA might not see the joke...
