Yeah...come across several who got wasted in their victory rolls and displays.

Remember a story about an american who was going to transfer a p51 to another airfield here in sweden during the war. (many americans and germans emergencylanded here)
At some point after takeoff he lost it and started a dangerous display at low level and almost killed some groundcrew with his lowflying and then crashed and lost his life.

If I recall correctly he was one of the pilots who earlier had escorted B17's to russia.

I'm pretty sure that's me strafing ground targets when my TrackIR goes haywire. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

F-5 was the photo recon version of the P-38. No weapons, just cameras. F-6 was the recon version of the P-51, USAAF also had a few Mosquitos, but I can't recall the American designation off the top of my head.

Thanks for the info, Vocatx. Just another of the many things I didn't know that I didn't know. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

the pilot of that aircraft is Auger. You can read his adventures at airwarfare: http://www.airwarfare.com/AWX/features/auger/index.htm

nice photo edit, but the shadows on the a/c no longer match the shadows of other objects in the photo.

I have seen this photo in a few books, I believe I first saw it in warren bodie's "the lockheed P-38 lightning" btw if your going to only buy one book on the P-38 that would be the one to buy, its cheap too........under 20 dollars for the paper back.

as far as I know the pilot was just goofing off/showing off and he did not crash. no book as ever made reference to the pilot crashing in the above mentioned photo. had he crashed I would tend to think that there would be before and after pics of the crash.

Just my opinion, but a name like "Auger" is not good for someone who likes to fly close to the ground! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif

Just for interest's sake.....was that a court-martial offence in the US airforces, as it was in the RAF?

wow...if this photo is authentic the pilot never heard of douglas bader or what low level aerobatics could result in, i highly doubt its authenticity but if its for real i give this pilot less than a 50/50 chance of surviving the war. photo recon pilots were very brave and most if not all were highly experienced pilots, it would be very rare to see one pull a stunt like that after a long and physically draining flight over hostile territory.
