The new water requires PS 3.0 to run. Only 6800's have PS 3.0. 99% of people won't be able to. Don't feel lonley.

if my memory is still working, i remember Hunter82 saying that PS3.0 is just a diferent (more economical iirc) way to render the water, and that other card could get the water also, but with a higher resources used....hope i didn't mixed anything up... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

PS 3.0 requirea a completely different processor architecture in order to run. PS 2.X will not do the job. Unfortunately only the 6800 series Nvidia cards have that capability now. Ths difference is quite amazing with the water, about like the difference between "excellent" and "perfect" settings is now.

the nvidia 6600 series also has 3.0 shaders...for about 200 bucks or a little over.

Vertex Shaders are the most important for water and cloth textures-and after doing some research PS 3.0 should allow devs to make their water look better than if they were using PS2.0-but at the moment we don't know if maddox will work that hard at using VS3.0 for the water-and what the difference will be over 2.0-it's a **** shoot-and one that probably won't be distinguishable-but that's just my guess.

and your 4800 won't do it.

With the new nvidia cards you have the option of not using pixel shaded water. Thats right its NOT PS. It uses shader model 3 SM_3_0 to do a form of displacement mapping. It acually adds geometry to the water surface unlike PS which gives the flat surface a fancy moving effect. While the ATI cards have the best vertex shaders in the business Oleg is unfortunately using a feature not supported by the ATI cards. This feature is allowing the vertex shaders to do texture lookups. For more information see here:

Well that looks grate. Good thing that I bougt 6800GT few monts a go. I was going to by X800 XT but only XT i found was PCI_Express. ATI start new portsupport too soon, too heawy. I will not buy new Mb only because new craphigcard.
