as anyone who saw my thread earlier will know i have recently decided the LaGG-3 (Particulary the Series4 (1941)) is my new favourite plane - not too uber and not too crappy - an OK speed OK manevarability and pretty damn good armament (IMO).
as i am relatively new to this plane i was wondering if any old hands could give me some directions or share some tips about how to get the best from the old bird/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif
BnZ seems possible - it has a good dive speed - but maybe not the power to get away - i don't know if it has the turning circle to TnB .. i know 90% of tactics depend on the e/a but there must be some general things people can tell me....about the 1941 version in particular - but IT and 66 series will be useful too ...

thanks /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

why is it funny that you never flow it in FB may be in IL2?

Funny... I never really thought about how I fly it. This is just MY way. You might find better methods.

I find the Lagg 3 is an excellent turner and can easily pop-off any Jerry fighter in turn fights. It`s good to barrel roll with or scissoring. I do some loops, but not much, they don`t really have the power. It has relatively good acceleration, but I find it`s good to gain as much height as poss (about 2000 or more) to give yourself some extra advantage.

The guns are good. I usually fire a small burst with my mg (which is often enough to smoke their engines), then I`ll kill with a short burst with cannons. Personally I don`t combine my guns on one key cos the Lagg does run out of ammo quick. Oh and I ALWAYS take rockets. I fire rockets first, then mgs, then cannons.

Biggest problem is in catching a run away bf109, or escaping them. if they don`t want you to catch them you won`t. Even when I tried using my height to catch a lightly smoking AI pilot he just dived and extended away to his lines, I had to give up.
Again, if you need to run home and the enemy want you it is VERY HARD to escape. Especially 110s the twin engined fighters are the nightmare of Lagg 3 s4, you can`t out run them and their guns kill your machine with one touch!. What I do is run, turn, run turn, dive really low- sometimes they crash. And ALWAYS ask for help, with luck your wingmen will save the day. Also ask for backup from HQ which has saved my bacon more than once.

Damn, This waffle went on longer than I expected, Sorry. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif

You gota love the LaGG's. The 43 seem to have some extra speed now and dives great. Haven't taken up the 41 yet.

i like the Lagg. First took it up on a whim, then kinda grew to like it. Being so rugged is good in campaigns (tho haven't flown it this way in 1.1b yet -working on a I16 tip 24 camp.)

I just try to always have an altidude advantage9as in "Hey Dude, I'm up here!" , boom & zoom & always plan for an escape route. With the new stall I think it will pay to learn exactly how far you can push it.
In ORR Shrike said he uses flaps to out turn bad guys, so that is worth playing around with. Best thing is the Laggs firepower, & she holds steady so you can take longer shots. I use the Mgs at longer range to try to damage Me109s. Then close & let 'em have it.

Because the Lagg is slower than the 109s i try to be very careful about my energy state & just use my turning ability when I am ready to take a shot. Also she doesn't have the agility of an I16 or yak 1 so you can't use turns as effectively .

I did in the previous IL2 , not in FB. Was really rewrding to see those Emils spinning towards the earth. Neverthless , a slow plane , small guns , well t least that was then , didn't tried it after the patch.

I like the Lagg, it is an average plane, no big surprises with that one.

Its a nice & capable plane. As someone said, not too ├╝ber and not too crappy. The finnish pilots had respect for it when it arrived.

In fact, while the LaGG (1941) has the turning circle to TnB, I don't think that's a great idea since it loses energy very quickly and lacks the power to accelerate again, which makes you a sittin'duck after having made one or two tight turns (quite dangerous if you have more than one opponent).

BnZ is the right solution since you have a good dive speed and a strong armament.

But, as a whole, with equal pilots, I think the Me109F4 is better.

With the 1943 type, you have a lighter plane with extra engine power, and that allows you to have enough speed to get away from most opponents close to the ground, but you can also TnB (but not too much since this one also bleeds energy very quickly) because with this one you have enough power to regain speed.

In my mind the 1943 type is, under 3000 m, about equal to the contemporary german fighters, perhaps a little inferior (but not too much) to the Fw-190A5.

The LaGG-3 and Mig-3 are great fun in the beginning of the campaign. The LaGG-3's weapons kick, especially when you are competing with the 109-F2, which can't do much to a LaGG-3 unless you are careless. Because you can turn well, but bleed energy quickly, I usually try to start with alt advantage, dive on target, make adjustment, fire, climb and repeat as needed against fighters. Kind of like big turning high yo-yo.

I hate flying the LaGG-3 against bombers though - it's too hard to get your closure rate up for a 6-oclock attack. The mig3 is a much better interceptor, even though it's more flimsy.

Both the LaGG3 and Mig3 present a good challange when fighting the start of the campaign. Unlike the I-16 where you can win fights, but never have the initiative.

I love the bird. It is very stable platform which makes aiming very easy. And the guns... aguably the best in the game. Excellent for fighters and more than adequade for middle bombers.

I dunno about after patch, but I loved online playing FB in Lagg-3 1941. I play against my friend and give him really hard time when I am in it.

While online, I try to stay high and in vertical as much as I can. You can outfly (vanilla FB) most od the fighters that way. Once we lose speed and get into TnB... he's toast.

Best,
Kursula
