they seem to give off a shower of flares when hit. Was this some sort of defense mechanism?

It's the bullets hitting the amour plate.

and indeed, this armour plating was some sort of defense mechanism http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

hit the engine from below, that will look different

My technique with the Il-2 was always "Import a 109K from the future and knock them out of the sky with the 30mm!".
The other pilots in my squad in 42 were a little confused...and jelous...http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

A short 7.9mm burst to the oil cooler under the engine will eventually disable the Il-2. Once it starts smoking, move on to the next one. the smoking one will crash in five minutes or so.

1/4 inch plate armour, that will spark up http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Martosaurus, for emphasised effect try attacking an IL2 with a HurriIIb (or whichever has 12 light MGs).

Well, of course this technique will only work on AI or on unsuspected human. Once they see you (online that is) they start jinking around and you are lucky if you hit the plane, let alone a bloody tiny oil cooler.

Shower of flares? That sounds to me as if the IL2 that is hit just drops it's "napalm"like ordonance (I have forgotten the name of that weapon), like bombers drop their bombs when hit.

The Il2 has some funky ordinance. The napalm like ordinance was either VAP_250 (two pods each with 18 phosphorus cannisters) or AJ-2 ampoules .. these are teh oens that create the amazing looking green fire.

Another possibility is the PTAB-2.5 cluster bombs (up to 192 per load out)which were basically a mass of anti-personnel/light vehicle bomblets.

I have however seen the effect he is describing on Il2's and it is not related to ordinance ... it does in fact look just like incendiary ammo bouncing off the plane and fizzling a bit like fireworks. You get the effect in the same situation that you would otherwise see the sparkly flashes of deflection hits on other aircraft.

IL2 is one of those rare planes

they show added animations when attacked - these are bullet & shrapnel riccochet

The cassettes loadout is the absolute best anti-armor ordnance for clustered or semi-clustered hardened armor.

I discovered this too few days ago, while reviewing a track of a CAD mission

Yes, the Sturmovik was intended to be one of the few flyable planes, anyway to be the star of the game, so it has some extra things.

IIRC the Sturmovik's rear gunner is the only one who warns you "break left" or "break right" if an enemy is incoming, and also if you are going too low: "ooooh niet!!!!!" http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

In this video you'll see the same flares (ricochet).

I would like to see them in more planes (see -> BoB).

I have also noticed that the A-20 gunner now says things in Russian which are officially translated as "Dodge! Enemy fighter approaching!" (Actually what he's really saying is probably "Oh s#&t! 109 in sight! Time to get my 'shute and head for the exits!")
