Alright Gentlemen, since I see that the riddles here are of interest to you, I have a good one. The people who might know it please be patient and speak after the ones who will have a guess.

There goes nothing...

In a monastery, there is a certain X number of monks. These monks have some very specific and VERY strict rules.

1) They cannot communicate with each other in any, but ANY way. (be it verbal, manual, signals, writing, whatever you might think of)

2) These monks, every day at noon, they gather round a big table, where everyone can see the others face and eat. (Of course as we said, communication is forbidden).

3) They cannot see the reflection of themselves (be it in the mirror, water, spoon, whatever you might think of).

These are the simple but very strict rules.

Now, one day, just before dining, there comes a notice from the archbishop, saying the following;

"There has been a strange illness going about the countryside, and for it, we know the following;

1) The symptom is a clearly visible red dot on the forehead, which is by any means not plapable! The only way to detect it, is to see it.

2) This illness is considered a mortal sin by the church, and the only way a person (and especially a monk) can redeem himself is to commit suicide. (suicide will not be looked upon as a sin in this particular case).

3) We know as a fact, that there is AT LEAST ONE of you infected with it. There might be more, or even all of you.

It is therefore your highest duty to detect wether you are infected and commit suicide the soonest!

End of Notice."

Now the big question is:
"In how many (Y) days will the infected (X) monks commit suicide?

The X represents the number of monks which can be whatever you like and the Y is the number of days that we are looking for. We know that X is equal or greater than one.

Disclaimer: The church and bishop and the way they are looking upon suicide is purely fictional and is for the purposes of the riddle. In no way does it reflect the personal views of the author.

That's it guys, hope you like it! Good luck and good mind twisting!!! The answer will come as soon as someone asks for it!

Tip: There are no tricks in this riddle. Do not try to think of ways to make the monks communicate and see their own selves. The way to think is pure logic, and bear in mind that all the monks think in the same logical way.

Hmm let's see,

If there is only one monk infected, he will commit suicide the first day. He will see others' faces, who are not infected, and he knows that somebody must be.
The others won't be sure if they are infected or not, but won't commit suicide, because the only one they can see is infected will do it.

If there are two monks infected, nobody will commit suicide the first day. The second day they will see that everybody is still there, so they two will commit suicide.

If there are three, they will commit suicide the third day and so on.

Each monk waits the same number of days as infected monks he sees. The infected monks commit suicide one day before the uninfected would have, and the uninfected give a sigh of relief.

And my head hurts now.

Just imagine a horde of monks with a red dot going round in circles going "Pie Iesu Domine" *Bang* "Dona eis requiem" *Bang*!

Ha ha that was a good one Popeye! You reminded me of Monty Pythons and the Grail!

hrm, so, if there is one very very stupid monk with a red dot, who doesnt kill himself on the second day - then everyone else will think that they are the second monk with a red dot, and all kill themselves http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif. And the stupid (and sinful and diseased) monk will live to become the next archbishop. That must be how survival and progress of the stupidest works http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
I think there's more to this riddle that first meets the eye http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Yes, there is SO much, that can go wrong with this scenario. The monks are only human after all. And what about all the hindus...

"Dona eis requiem..." Ploff

None of the monks would commit suicide...they would not believe the letter writer that all is lost (this is indicated by the wording in the letter '...for it [the sickness] we know the following...')...hence wisely not trusting to the incomplete knowledge of others in charge of them they would go and find a doctor that can cure it (without saying a word or indicating it to anyone)...that is pure logic...

That does not even have to take the length of one day (back in those days of course)...

But if they are not allowed to communicate in any way, how would they know about the disease....

Absolutely my thinking Maverick. The Monks would never have read the notice because of their "rules". http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

Are conveyor belts allowed?

Ok, since we started the game of funny and meaningless contracidtion, here are some more rules: The moks cannot leave the monastery, you are not allowed to enter the monastery unless you are a monk, once you've become a monk you cannot break your oath to God and become civilian again.

I know that I didnt have to say these rules because the initial post was sufficient, but just for the sake of having another "conveyor belt" fun, there you go.

Try and find more inaccuracies, the more you find, the better, since I will come up with more rules, making the puzzle complete!

Oh, by the by, what is the speed of an African and a European swallow? I always had this question... can they carry a coconut between them? Hehe

"We are the Knights who say 'Ni'!"

I think they cannot communicate with each other. But their boss, the archbishop can communicate with them, nothing forbids that.

Which makes me think practical: why noone from the monks sent a reply to the archbishop, and asked for his help to point out the ones with red TrackIR dots on their foreheads? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif
