Last week I took a trip to RAF Cosford to try out my new digital camera. I took 400+ photos but some did not come out very well and I did not film every thing I wanted to, so the day after I went again and took 400 more! This is more photos than I have taken in my life up to this point, so bear with the low quality.

I will try and post as many as possible, I did not photograph every aircaft they have but by the end it will seem like it.

Cosford is a great place, I recommend a visit .
Any way down to bussiness.
Beside the carpark is a Bristol Britannia, in rather poor condition but it is under restoration.

I can not take much credit for how well the photos came out, the cameras automatic functions are very good. I am glad I bought it, but thanks any way.

"did you manage to snap any of the German exhibits?"
There are not many German planes at Cosford. I remember only seeing the Me163, Me410, Storch and a Ju52. I took photos of all of them so check back later and I will eventually post them all.

Iam sorry the pictures are too large. I have resized them already and don't want to do it again as it takes ages. Some Internet Browsers allow you to resize what is on you screen, perhaps you could check your settings? Sorry but that is all I can think of. As to WW2 planes there are plenty at Cosford. I will finish posting experimental & prototype aircraft first then post the photos I took in the War Planes hanger.

Thanks for your posts and I hope you enjoy the rest of mine.

Great Pictures One13! Thanks a lot for sharing.

As stated before, your Meteor shots could be useful for the SOW Korea project. Do you have any other pictures of the Meteor? If yes it would be great if you could post them as well.

I took the liberty and posted your pics here:

I don't live too far from Cosford. It's a superb museum and the new Cold War exhibit is excellent.

The two aircraft that are of particular note in your photo's for me are the TSR2, which was a technological marvel at the time and would have put the British aerospace industry years ahead of its foreign competitors,. It was killed off by the Labour government who decided to adopt the F-111, which never happened!!! It sounded the death knell of the British Aerospace industry. (Whereas todays Labour has killed off British industry in general!!!)

And the SR53, which was seriously in line for adoption by NATO but rejected in favour of the Lockheed F-104 Starfighter. The F-104 was adopted by the Luftwaffe as a result of bribes paid by Lockheed to corrupt German politicians! Lockheed were later sanctioned as a result but by then it was too late for the SR53.

Cosford is an excellent museum and best of all it's free to get in! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Especially like the Gloster Meteor prototype!

About the F-104 bribes...it was pretty much the same thing in Holland, even involving royalty!

Yes the Starfighter was a desaster, many pilots had to pay with their lives for this decision.

"Do you have any other pictures of the Meteor? If yes it would be great if you could post them as well."
The pictures of the prototype Meteor would not be very good for Korea as by then they were using the F8, which had a different cockpit canopy, tail, engines and a longer fuselage. There is one at Cosford and I was going to post them yesterday but the forum was acting up and I lost several posts. So you will enjoy what I post today.

Bo_Nidle
"The two aircraft that are of particular note in your photo's for me are the TSR2....And the SR53..."
Yes both are very interesting aircraft. If the TSR2 had been built I'm sure it would have had a long life and might still be in use like the F-111. The SR53 would not have gone into production. There was too have been an improved larger version called the SR177.

woofiedog
"Really like those photos of the Fairey FD2! What a Beauty"
Yes, it's a great looking aircraft. It looks like they tried to fit the pilot, engine and fuel in the smallest and most slippery design they could. You can't help thinking though that the cockpit would have been very cramped with terrible visibility.

Next I move onto the War Planes hanger. I will start with two objects which need no introduction, the Messerschmitt Me163 and the Rheinmetall-Borsig MK108.

The Me163 looked in rather poor condtion or it was in the middle of restoration as the wings were held up by jacks.
The thing I noticed about the Mk108's was how firmly bolted down they were.

Meserschmitt Me410. The first time I went the engine covers were shut. The next time I went there had been an oil leak and they were open so I took some shots of the engine and oil cooler.

Molins 6pdr or 57mm quick firing gun. Originally designed for the Army for use in a fast wheeled tank destroyer it was used by the Navy on MBTs and MGBs to counter German S-boote. Also used by the RAF. Originally intended as an anti-tank weapon it was used instead by Costal Command for anti-submarine and anti-shipping strikes. Mounted in the Mosquito Mk.XVIII or 'Tesetses'.
It fired 3.17Kg AP shot at 790m/s with a rate of fire of 60rpm.

One13... Some Extremely Mint Work on these photos especially being in such tight quarters.

What a collection of aircraft under one roof.

Thank You for taking the time and work into posting these Mint photos.

Also was reading a bit of info on that Fairey FD2...

Both French Air Force and Dassault personnel were at the airfield along with the Fairey team. Forty-seven low-level supersonic flights took place over a period of two months. It was no coincidence that Dassault had their engineers at Cazaux as they, like Fairey, were interested in delta wing fighters and during the FD.2s tests they learnt a lot about the characteristics of supersonic delta wings. Two days after the FD.2 had returned home the first Mirage III prototype was rolled out. Both in size and appearance it was almost a carbon copy of the FD.2.

The next series of overseas low-level research flights took place in Norway with observers from the United States in attendance. Remember the Convair Delta Dagger? The FD.2 was never allowed to be developed into a fighter. The Dassault Mirage went on to become the best-selling fighter aircraft range of all time.

By the time of the FD.2's first flight the F-102
"Delta Dagger" was already entering squadron service.
By the time of the first flight of the FD.2 the
follow up to the F-102, the Convair F-106 "Delta Dart"
had already flown it's first test flight.

Sorry, can't blame us yanks for sponging up
any Brit tech on this one.
Maybe the reverse. I bet we sent the Brits
some F-102 data..........

http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/784.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/784.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/784.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/784.gif
I could suggest that the Brits stole F-104 data
and reverse engineered it to build the Saunders Roe SR53. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif

The similarities are striking.

Thanks for your kind words. As to the FD2 I always thought it was a pure research aircraft, too small to be turned into a fighter. But then again many promising designs were scrapped due to the 1957 White Paper.

English Electric Lightning.
Prime mover behind this project was W.E'Teddy'Petter who also designed the Canberra and the Whirlwind. It entered sevice in 1960 and was the RAFs first supersonic fighter. It was retired from service in 1988.

The first version the F.1 had an armament of two ADEN cannon in the nose infront of the cockpit and two Firestreak AAMs.
Later versions had the guns in a ventral pack, plus two Firesteak or Redtop AAMs. Or 44 2-inch spin-stabilised rockets or five Vinten 70-mm cameras, or other reconnaissence cameras. Underwing hardpoints could carry up to 144 rockets or six 1,000lb bombs.

F.6
Max speed Mach2.3 or 2415km/h, 1,500mph at 12190m, 40,000ft.
Inital rate of climb 15240m, 50,000ft per minute.
Time to operatinal height 12190m/40,000ft and speed of Mach0.9 is 2 minutes 30 seconds.

It was diffacult taking picture of this one because the best place was a suspended walkway which swayed every time you moved or someone walked by. But you could get views you don't normally see. I like the ones where the skin is lit by natural light from the skylight above it.

Short S.C.5 Belfast. It was hard to get a good photo of this as its a large aircraft tucked into a small corner of the Cold War Hanger.

When it entered service with the RAF in 1966 it was the largest aircraft to have served with them. It was the heart of the RAF's long range heavy transport commitment until the late 1970s.

When they left RAF service they were converted to commercial and proved effective, not least during the Falklands campaign. They were taken out of service in 1983. This is the only one left, the rest were scrapped.
