I'm having trouble understanding convoy reports - the attached show's a convoy as reported to me in a recent session, however I have little idea as to it's whereabouts. I was playing with map icon's on but it didn't show on the map and gives an grid ref which I cannot decipher!

Can you guys help me plz?
Regards
Gary
PS am using the GWX3 expansion.

Gazpode -
I have been here a long time but until recently haven't been able to immerse myself into this sim deeply. With that said I'll toss in my thoughts...the message is an "immersion" detail, and other than reading it if you wish, it has little if any bearing on anything you can do. At least this is my experience with these messages.
I promise you that if this is in any way incorrect other members will jump in with their thoughts. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

I'm currently running SH3 stock, except for the default SH3 Commander mods, and the 'Convoy' messages seem to make more sense - Two letters and a number, to indicate the map location. I've got 'map contact update' selected(or whatever the option is called), and the convoy is shown in the same position as the message indicates. I still manage to lose convoys sometimes, but that is probably down to them changing course on the western approaches. Still, it is summer of '42, and I'll get better radar soon - unfortunately, so will the horrible s*ds in their gravity-defying monstrosity aeroplanes. !Alaaaaarm!

I should have stayed at home in Düsseldorf...

AL 0353 is AL03 plus two additional location indicators.

Imagine a TicTacToe pattern in AL03 - and you divide the sector into 9 identical areas. 5 indicates the fifth sector - the one in the middle.

Now imagine the middle sector is again cut into 9 equal parts. 3 indicates the third field - the upper right one.

It's a way to define the location of a contact more precisely.

Now where is that ******* milkcow ...

All radio reports reading four location indicators are just for "ear candy" implemented by GWX. The game reports "real" convoys only as sailing in AL 03 and it shows a convoy icon on the map for your convenience.

About halway down it mentions this convoy as an actual convoy/position...

Still dunno why it didn't show on my map as I wasn't too far from AL grid references....

Because it is not really there in the game. The radio message is for immersion only. As Mittelwaechter said...

@HW3: thanks for your reply - I didn't really ready the comment from "Mittelwaechter" properly at all. Now that I just have it all makes perfect sense. Thanks for pointing out his comment.. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/inlove.gif
