I can 'smell' that grass under the vehicles.. HEYYY.. Get off the grass.. you're ruining my 'crops'..
Looks great.. I reckon to make the 3D environ look like the what you make on the map... is probably what's taking up a lot of dev time

I have been meaning to say since the trains update that the soft edge, real time shadows are magnificent and will be the standard by which other shadows are measured. It sounds silly, but it will be so, just wait and see...like so many other things in this sim that other games and sims will be compared to for years to come.
There will be no equal for a very long time.
When it does get bested by anther sim/game, Oleg will have created it.

First, let me say:

It's nice to see an update that addresses something other than graphics or 3D modeling.
http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

VERY COOL map tools! I'm actually very surprised and pleased that Oleg is going to allow the terrain itself to be modified. This could be awesomely cool if we can add our own tga's to the game. I'm thinking with ground textures like we've seen at AAA, we could have Malta or desert maps without waiting for a future add-on.

What happened to the 3D grass, I wonder? This grass looks very nice from above, although it is less so from a shallow angle (which shouldn't be noticeable except during TO and landings). Ditto the variable markings on the vehicles; I wonder if we'll be able to add our own markings.

Whole new map campaigns are going to be as easy as building missions in the current IL-2. This freaking Sim is going to be AMAZING!!! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

A computer to fully use the game on all but low to med/low settings has to be top end now or not procurable yet
very interesting and a benchmark for future sims
waiting with baited breath and saving up thousands for a rig to run it
Is Oleg going to post specifications for hardware to use this amazing program

I am looking forward to SOW. Not the B.o.B part so much because it has been done to death.

But get realistic, I for one could care less if the bloody grass is 3d or what we have in IL2. But as for the updates, phhhh looks more like a lawnmower sim than an upcoming flight sim.

Wow...even Gibbage is complaining.
I expect that with the complexity of this new sim, and the many things that are involved with the ground units, we will get an update with only ground units in it, don't you think?
We have seen some nice AC shots recently. I am glad that Oleg is showing us many different aspects of the sim and not just the planes.
Who thinks that Oleg is giving more attention to other parts of the sim than to the AC? I don't, and seeing how much Oleg is putting into the ground stuff, the planes are going to be something very special when they are done.

Think about it !!
- The planes were done long ago with original IL2 series - the've just improved upon them and tweaked the FMs
- This Ground stuff is probably a precursor for a 'Total War' game where players can play either Army/Navy/Airforce... this will be a total blast.

Wonder what the depth and scope of Naval vessel modeling will be.

If this had been anywhere near release we would have seen ingame pictures of the planes not just in some 3d program WIP shots or video's of a map editor. We'd be seeing video's of actual in game planes flying about and blowing stuff up.

VERY COOL map tools! ....

I agree. It is nice to see another aspect of the game's development, one we haven't seen before.
I presume what we are seeing are the user-tools that will be available soon after the game has been released.

I'm amazed that different town types can be mixed ('painted on') in that way!!!! It will allow for very varied types town to be easily made within minutes, instead of having to use repetitive town types. The same goes for the ability to modify terrain.
Shame only that the town roads are placed differently on the different map types. Transitions aren't smooth between them.

Thanks Oleg for showing something new.

I think you are right. Oleg has alredy mentioned that we will be able to drive subs in SoW. Many have been waiting for an all out WWII sim with the quality of IL-2 for a long time, instead of the crap planes like in Battlefield 1942 and such.

Pretty sure we are in for a much more realistic WWII online with SoW, you just wait and see.

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that you could 'jump' into ground AA posistions to defend friendly ground installations.
So if SOW really is going to envelop the whole aspects of WW2 by which I mean land and air (not too sure about sea though) and we do get the full war experience then I'll be glad to wait until its finished (just as long as its this decade http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/34.gif).

I can see now why Oleg are saying this sim will make a revolution in the world of combat flight sims.
The paradox is: because it will not be ONLY a flight sim. Please don´t compare with battlefield, because that it´s not really a simulation.

are you sure that's not just the difference between a design time renderer and an in-game real time renderer?

the reason i ask is because in a moving game scene, you often have to artificially limit the sharpness of textures in order to avoid flickering, depending on the level of filtering your you can afford while still getting acceptable fps.

in a development environment otoh you'd always work at maximum texture resolution and tolerate any flickering (which you won't see on stills or on youtube) the live filtering does not manage to prevent.

Those tanks sure do look detailed. I'd like to see more of the terrain, because if they are sitting on flat, plain textures in game they will look like models, albeit very detailed ones. The terrain is 100 times more important than the tanks in my opinion.

I highly doubt that Oleg will give us an "unbalanced" looking sim.
Since the tanks and ground objects are highly detailed, then so will be ground textures when they are completed.

Salute All

I just wanted to point out some of the level of detail we are going to get in STORM OF WAR Battle of Britain.

Compared to IL-2, the graphics models are very detailed. There are up to 35.000 polys for a single engine fighter, and up to 50,000 for dual engined.

This is the external model.

That is approx. 10 times the number of polys that we are currently seeing for the IL-2 models.

So far we have just seen screenshots, with a few early low res videos, they do not give the effect we will be seeing in the game.
A single frame screenshot, seen by itself, is not nearly as impressive to the eye as 30 of them per second.
The depth and resolution we should see, especially at the close and middle distances should really start to approach photo-realism.

When we get up really close to an aircraft, then we will see rips in the sheet aluminum from cannon shells,
dents in the metal, the larger areas of damage will shot the torn edges of metal or fabric.
Small individual elements such as aerials, the pilot's features, his personal markings.
In IL-2 you can place those on your aircraft, but the resolution is never enough to see them clearly in flight. BoB will cross that gap.

The effect of gunfire on an aircraft will be dramatic, with identifiable parts like control surfaces, being knocked away by the impact of gunfire.

Most of you have seen the picture of the weathering on the Spit I

http://files.games.1c.ru/il2pict/Spitfire%20Mk.I_02.jpg

When this type of resolution is coming at us at 30 frames a second, the eye will be saturated with the detail.

As you close on a Ju-88, lining up your shot, or pass under one of those evil dark Stukas,
the image will resolve itself into this level of detail:

http://files.games.1c.ru/il2pict/Ju-88A-1_03.jpg

http://files.games.1c.ru/il2pict/ju-87-02.jpg

And of course, the flight model will be much more realistic, with stalls, spins, yawing, trim, engine torque,
and all those elements which make up real flight being incorporated in much more detail.

I seem to remember for example, Oleg mentioning slipstreams...

Imagine the look on a furballer's face when playing his usual tactic of 'daisy chaining', he hits the slipstream of the aircraft he is chasing at ground level, and spins into the dirt... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Many of you will remember the first time they flew the IL-2 demo, and that mission with the P-39 in the rain.

For me it was a revelation, and amazing.

BoB will be the same. Mark my works, Oleg has real dynamite in store for us. I am expecting to get my socks blown off...

Most of you guys have seen the new RISE OF FLIGHT videos.

They look pretty good compared to IL-2, but compared to what BoB will give us, they will seem fairly crude.

The downside of course, is that we'll ALL need super computers to get the detail onto our monitors. (and high quality monitors)
Probably we'll need a really high end dual core, or maybe even a quad core, along with the very best graphics card and a BUNCH of RAM.

Such is the lot of us Simmers... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

After seeing the Birds of Prey videos I'm sure we wil get a decent look from Sow:BoB without having to have the best of computers. Granted, we will have to lower a number of settings, but I have to do that on my present comp' with FB.

I think the variables available to the user will allow for us to tailor the game according to computer limitations.

Just turn down the fine detail if it isn't working too well, and I'm sure it will still look ten times better than the sim we have today.

Remember that that FB uses an old engine. A game tailored for modern computers will surely work so much better on them.

WHy do you think he has big problems?

As far as I know its just a complex next generation sim which is time consuming to produce. He has such experince with flight sims that I very much doubt he has big problems.

It will be done when its done, he will not rush out a substandard sim.
