You spot a huge plume of smoke on the horizon during the day but its too far away to identify. So you decide to risk surfacing the boat to run flank speed to intercept what looks like should be a huge target.......

just to find it is a small fishing boat? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/53.gif http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_mad.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/compsmash.gif

What are some of the things that happen in-game that drive you bonkers?

Better that than a destroyer...

Heard a medium-speed merchant in the channel. Surfaced and closed in at flank speed. It turned out to be a tug boat that relayed my position to two destroyers that promptly blew me out of the water http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

When in a convoys situation, too busy making up a sulution that will hit 3 ships in the column ahead, that you forget that you are in the middle of another column. And then you get sunk by a small merchant http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

Well, getting into mid-late `41 I find it a bit of a stinker when I'm reloading externals and get jumped by the RAF. One dual flak isn't cutting it anymore.

http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-mad.gif What I hate the most is when I'm at the end of a patrol, have just fired my last torpedo or torpedoes and only manage to damage the merchant that I was shooting at. So I surface to finish of the merchant with the deckgun and lo and behold the weather is too rought to man the deck gun. I've left alot of tonnage just floating in the Atlantic for someone else to sink or for the Allies to tow the damaged ship into port so it can be repaired. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/bigtears.gif

Or in my case, just not have enough ammo to finish the job. Yep, been there done that too. I agree, very frustrating!

Here's my all time greatest stupid commander moment:

I am attacking a nice fat, slow convoy, I've got a full load of fish, the weather is clear and flat calm. My plan is to fire one fish at each target, cripple them at a minimum, wait for the convoy to move on and then finish them off.

Fire off all 5 fish, get five good hits, and have a pool of juicy targets making no speed. An escort moves in, dumps a bunch of depth charges, rocks my world, but eventually moves off. My hull intergrity is down to about 55% (the guy was good), but what the hell, the convoy is moving away, I'll just go down to about 50 meters, set the rudder to make a nice lazy circle, reload my tubes in case I can't use the deck gun and finish these guys off before I head home.

Seems like a good time to visit the head and grab a cup of coffee. When I get back I find out that I have sunk and my career is over.

Guess what happened? I walked away, the boat dove past what the hull would take because of the damage, and I flooded and sank. Got to learn to pause the game if I'm not sitting in front of the screen.

I've been out in foggy weather for seemingly weeks on end and finally get a sound contact. After spending many hours tracking it and catching up to it after numerous dives for more sound bearings, I finally get in close enough for an attack and find it is a lousy trawler, or worse, a big fat neutral.

http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif Oh yes, let's not forget the neutrals!

@ Texan5224
True that.

@ Foehammer-1
Ouch! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/1072.gif

@ danurve
I hear a warning in that. Thanks! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

@ vietvettwo
Yeah, stupid stuff waiting to happen while you're away & not paused. Its like the game is clairvoyant & has a personal vendetta against us.

Very frustrating is my own stupidity. I spotted a C3 (base + 1.4b - been playing 4 weeks), I've just upgraded from a IIA to a VIIC for 3000 renown, so I track the bugger for 5 kays and turn to get a nice 90 off port shot then lie in wait for my unsuspecting victim. Suddenly he's zigging and zagging all over the place and my solution was shot to hell. I was checking all around for possible signs of a destroyer that had given away my position when I realised I'd forgotten to submerge! Idiot! Idiot! Idiot! One more point on the checklist...

This happened to me last night:
On my 8th patrol BdU sends me to AM51. Because I had hard time passing through the English Channel on my last patrol, this time I opt to go up & around Scapa Flow to & from AM51. Around 23:30 on September 11, 1940 just as I'm finishing up the patrol & entering the harbor @ Wilhelmshaven, BdU redirects me to Lorient. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_redface.gif Lorient was operational before I started this patrol! BdU could've just told us from the start to return to Lorient. But no, they have to wait until we're almost docked to say, "Oh yeah, btw, you can't dock here. You have to go to Lorient." Just imagine a crew ready to go ashore within an hour to blow off steam & having to tell them, "Sorry lads, we have to turn around & go to Lorient." http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_mad.gif

Hahahahahahaha, poor Stingray's crew http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif I just remembered my first experience with the original GW when I still had it. As you know, all contacts there are grey. So I get a mechant contact in the middle of the North Sea. I set up a perfect shot, torpedo away. As I follow the steam trail with the free cam, something about the flag isn't right. It has a bloody SWASTIKA on it!!! Kaboom http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/1072.gif

Well, what made it so bad, as you know, is that it would've saved a ton of time (& fuel) to go directly to Lorient from AM51. As it ended up, we were so low on fuel upon returning to Wilhelmshaven that we had no choice but to go through the English Channel anyway! We made it, but it wasn't exactly a leisure cruise. Especially since we were virtually defenseless at that point (out of torps). You'd think they'd at least let us resupply @ Wilhelmshaven 1st! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/51.gif

Foehammer-1

But you could have done so anyway. Re-supply at Wilhelmshaven, then your orders will be to go straight to L'Orient. However, you can always detour to AM52 and hunt one of those near-defenseless convoys... And THEN head to L'Orient

Don't you just hate it when..."

You're playing SH3 late at night, and when you wake up after dozing off you see a "YOU IDIOT...YOU'RE DEAD" screen right in front of you?

How about some off topic ones?

"Don't you just hate it when..."

You're doing the dishes and you smash your shin on the dishwasher door?

You're in the middle of a big yawn and a seagull scores a direct hit in your mouth? (didn't happen to me, it happened to a senior officer on my boat)

You wake up, put your feet on the floor and feel something cold and mushy. You're quick to find out that your dog has found a new favorite place to go in the middle of the night?

Your kids didn't pick up all their toys out of the yard like you told them to? Now you have a 190mph G.I. Joe figure nailing you in the junk as you mow your lawn.

http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif Awesome ones, AO1!!

Okay, OT it is...

*When you rake dead leaves off your lawn, get distracted, walk away, but step on the rake? Then you jump around and swear, decide to go into the house for some ice for your forehead, and step on the same rake?? -This happened to my neighbor 2 doors down

*When you are biking, you wait for the light to turn green to cross the road. This truck turns and passes near you, and a sheet of ice falls of the roof and breaks up on the pavament right in front of you (happened to me eysterday)

*When you are about to cross a street, and a car comes up. You stop and wave for it to go, and the driver is waving at you to go, then you both move at the same time

*When you are biking on a sidewalk along the road, and a car pulls up to the road from a perpendicular street. The driver looks left, but forgets to look right, thats where you are. And then she hits the gas when you'r in front of the car.... I survived that one with only a bruise, thankfully http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

*When you are playing counter-strike source, and a phone rings upstairs. you bolt up, and it turns out it's your girlfriend. So after you spend at least half an hour talkin to her, you go back into the basement, and find out that you've been banned from your favorite server for being idle for 15 rounds.

*When your cat wants attention and you are being depth charged. You want to press Backspace, but press + instead. You come back and you are dead, obviously didn't save

* You are on the range, and lign up a perfect shot. Someone sneezes right when you pull the trigger, sending your shot into the neighbor's target http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
