Last weekend I had a blast in Pivka.

Beer, grill and "the band played Westerwald". http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

First the allies:

Including Dad's Army:

Brits:

All of them:

At dusk the allies launched a fearsome attack.
Kampfgruppe Webber, allready decimated by their long retreat into the Reich's territory, fought back with determination.

Initial surprise:

That German Staff Officer chick was cute. Nice, strong chin. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Just what I need when I get back from my patrols. Anybody get her number? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/inlove.gif

What type of toy weapons were they? Blank firing ones?

There was an advert on a community site in my area for re-enacters for WW2 stuff. They were going to use Airsoft weapons though.

They were originals (firing blanks ofcourse) and they managed to get the MG-42 into a working order only after the battle.
When drinking started a whole belt went through.
Needless to say I imediately had to order another beer to compose myself from over enjoyment.

Beer, grill and "the band played Westerwald".

Westerwald with subtitles and rare color footages (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ky-zdHMNFNM&feature=rec-fresh) http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Some smaller translation errors in it but nothing serious. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

The music is from the 6th Musikkorps der Bundeswehr from Hamburg

The choir is from the training battalion of the 2nd officers academy in Hamburg.

(They dont know anything about the beauty of the Westerwald, only about the sea .. and ships...and fishes http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif )

Its from the same japanese guy who made the great colorized "U-boot Lied" video somebody posted in a thread here long ago.

What ? My stuff ? Original , except certain smaller parts of the rifle (ironsights, forward barrel rings are replicas as i couldn't find any original parts in decent condition )

The bayonet attachment was installed by me, with original spare parts. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

The bolt is also original from A to Z including all small inner parts.

Its not fire ready as it was modified for deco purposes.

K98k rifles have a bent bolt handle, the early K98 variants have a straight one, as well as many (most) of the foreign Mausers.

But if I understand you correctly, this is a Frankenstein rifle you assembled using different parts from different sources?
That's a neat idea, only too bad you didn't get a bolt with a bent handle and the furniture is in really bad condition and looks horrible.

Have you considered refinishing it? It's not too difficult and the result is well worth it.

These are my two Mauser rifles, a 1954 FR-8 and a 100th anniversary K98k.

You should see what it looked like before http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Ive already worked on the wood and this is all you can do on it without sanding too much on it.

Ive sanded it and conserved it with two layers of "Schaftöl"

The rifle is a S/239 Berlin Borsigwalde from 1939.

Parabellum9x19

You mean it looked worse?! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

Well, actually it's no surprise. Only God knows how those rifles were treated and the conditions under which they were stored, in a big pile, coated in a fat layer of grease in some Russian warehouse... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/bigtears.gif

The wood soaked up much oil, grease and grime over that time. Before sanding, wash the stock down with acetone, let it dry, repeat several times. That will remove much of the dirt the wood has absorbed. Then sand, using only very fine sandpaper, then apply oil.

To what caliber was the FR-8 reworked ?

Parabellum9x19
07-01-2008, 12:49 AM
Originally it was in 7.62 NATO caliber, but at some point in its life it was rebarreled in .308 Winchester, probably shortly after being phased-out of service in the Guardia Civil when Spain sold the rifles to the civilian market.

The barrel on mine is in pretty good condition. Due to the short barrel accuracy is only satisfactorily, but I bought it just for casual plinking, not for competing in tournaments.

I'm left-handed, which makes shooting most bolt action rifles difficult. It's a bit easier with a straight bolt. I got used to the FR-8 very quickly and I'm very comfortable with it now.

The action is smooth, I really like the aperture sight, it is much better than the notch sight on the K98k, and overall this thing is a fun little shooter.

What's with the gratuitous display of photos containing images of the swastika? My father dropped bombs on the evil b......s who fought under that symbol, and you think it's fit to post it?

Messervy's images had an artistic quality and resonance, yours don't have that quality.

so we just delete images you would likely see in a german ocupied town because there politicaly incorrect....? oh my grandfathers both fought to, and my great uncle gave his life so please dont wave the bloody shirt, i dont see what that has to do with the flags. its fit to post it because it was part of the reenactment and im sorry i dont have the camera skills as Messervy i just thought it would be cool to post the photos of the skermish we reenacted, part of the reenactment is when the americans liberated the camp they went up there ripped the swastikas down and then put up the american flag i dont see anything wrong with that.

oh but the ones the photo company took for purchase i thought were very nice i am sorry there not up to your standards. but if you look you will see the GIs liberating the building. i wasnt awar we were supposed to leave parts of history out.

Oh, get off your horse! No, I know you "don't see anything wrong with that" otherwise you might have thought before you posted the images. Read the sticky at the head of this page about posting.

Don't dismiss my comments as being politically correct, you know nothing about me. I find the swastika symbol personally REVOLTING.

For all its ancient origins (indian art for example) it is now an unacceptable symbol of tyrrany and mass-murder, and, amongst educated people, inappropriate to display it in a casual context. You should have thought of that before uploading the images

Here is the relevent line from the sticky:

The presence of the swastika symbol in off-topic subjects, unrelated to the game or to WW2 history/technology, is not allowed because such discussions do not provide a relevant historical context. Therefore, swastika symbols can no longer be displayed in a member's signature or avatar.

comanderFritz
07-14-2008, 06:54 PM
you get off your high horse and relize it was used in historical context and not simply casualy displayed,

i personaly find the casual use of the soviet symbol REVOLTING but you dont see me insulting other peoples pictures when ever i see it. and yes i took personal offense to your post and frankly if the images were against UBI policy in a ww2 section of the forum and extreamly offensive they would have already been deleted,

i refer you to
WW2 history and technology subjects are - and always will be - popular and valuable topics of discussion in our forum. Therefore, the incidental display of swastikas in historical WW2 images will continue to be acceptable in such discussions.

this would fall under this rule as historical context

people like you need to chill out and realize the difference between historical portrayal and a bunch of neo-nazis marching around singing horst wessel.

KH and comanderFritz - Please stop flaming each other. You are going to have to agree to disagree I'm afraid and leave it at that.

The Swastika is, as we all know, an extremely contentious issue on these forums and I can see where you both stand on this particular use of it.

In this context, as distasteful as you may find them KH, these images are within the Ubisoft guidelines.

Perhaps next time commanderFritz you could select some images where the Swastika is a little less 'blatant' shall we say?. There are some excellent photo's here of yours that don't feature the Swastika after all.

This in a forum for a game in which you assume the role of a Kriegsmarine U-Boat commander, who sends ships and their crews to their watery grave, airmen to their fiery death, graphical effects of people blown sky-high into the sea from torpedo impacts, we even got mods for adding shipwrecked survivors, waving and crying out for help and left to a miserable fate of death through starvation, dehydration and despair. And all of this for entertainment purposes, of course.

People pat each other on the back for 100K and 200K patrols without batting an eye, but as soon as the evil swastika (booo!) appears, there's always someone quick to label it 'disturbing and offensive'.

The irony is almost painful. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/53.gif

I had the exact thought when I saw him.
At first he appeared a little young to me, then I said to myself: "Well you aren't exactly youngster yourself".
So it all made sense and came with a bit of a dual shock.
Yes, they were that young and yes again, I'm getting old.

Last weekend we had another re-enactment.

This time the German transport got ambushed by local partisans in scenic countryside.

Somewhere high in Slovenian hills:

German truck on it's routine daily trip

While a small group of partisans took cover, pioneer detachment got to work:

On the way back the innevitable thing happened

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v675/Messervy/Vojsko/Vojsko-19.jpg

Germans were quick to respond and took cover

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v675/Messervy/Vojsko/Vojsko-2-6.jpg

After a stalemate they decided to launch an attack.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v675/Messervy/Vojsko/Vojsko-8780.jpg

Encouraged by failed German assault the partisans took the initiative and launched an attack of their own

Ach...you see...the primary goal for me was to take pictures and as it is for now, you need to see and I forgot the contact lenses....

It was our gunsmith that created some home made explosives.

@Goose
The action shots of the explosions are actualy stills captured from movies made by EOS 5 Mark ll (with HD resolution 1920x1200 they are good enough for the internet) http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Ahh, I see! Messervy has a new toy, the Mark II http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif I think my father mentioned about upgrading not long ago http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

I really should get out more with my 450D, the last time I used it was for the snow fall in the UK recently including the shot I posted the other day, in fact I have enjoyed the excuse for night snow shots - a real challenge http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Obviously made far more easier with my monopod, but I admit it does have it's limitations and a tripod would be better http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Those were really nice pictures. Thanks for sharing. That looked like one hell of a hike up the mountainside, in full kit.

And....everything looked so....Cold. Bet those wool uniforms came in handy. Lots of fun to read and see.

Some of them look like stills from a war film.

Are you part of the re-enactment group? Official photographer? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/winky.gif

Some of the the pyrotechnics look like they exploded quite close to the re-enactors... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif Was that intended to happen like that? Looks very realistic anyway.

@VG
Yes, a member of the group and official photographer with two uniforms, U.S. 101st Airborn and German 139th Gebirgsjaeger (kriegsberichter/war correspondent).

Gebirgsjeager uniform is chosen due to tha fact that two thirds of our country was anexed by the third reich and some Gebirgsjaeger regiments contained up to 50% of Slovenians, who automaticaly became "Germans" and were forced to serve in Wehrmacht.

All in all some 120.000 of our boys served in Wehrmacht, from Finnland to Normandy.
Quite a "feat" for a country that ended the war in Victorious camp. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

The explosions were ment to be that close. Maybe more of stupidity than bravery.
