Grat pics! Any info on how the Germans came by those machines in such good condition? Ive seen a pic of a force-landed Stirling that went to Reichlin (sp?) for testing, but that was heavily patched up.

How about the bloke in the first colour pic, I wonder what he was thinking? - 'Why do I always have to paint these bloody crosses on everything we find?'

While the other two are saying - 'You can see he's no painter...He's put that cross upside down?'

I suppose most planes were belly landed ones with minor damage. Spare parts were supplied by the enemy (parts of shot down aircraft). Belly landed planes are often easy to repair, provided they land in your territory.
Also, I think there were a number of chases were british or US aircraft simply landed on the wrong side of the channel. I know of at least one B-26 that changed ownership because it landed it Amsterdam.
The P-38 is maybe the recon F-5 that was flown over by a defector in 1944 (how stupid to you have to be to defect to Germany in late 1944 http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif) or the P-38 the italians used to shoot down a B-17.
The Luftwaffe had the 1./Versuchsverband OBdL (nicknamed "Circus Rosarius" after its commander), a unit comprised of captured western planes which toured the fields of fighter units to familiarize the pilots with the enemy designs and especially to train attacking 4-engined bombers and to take away the fear of them by getting a close look. Unit leaders mostly had the opportunity of flying them as well. Julius Meimberg of II./JG 53 describes in his book how he flew a captured Thunderbolt ("terribly large, but trememdous firepower, but now I had an idea how to beat these things"). Strangely enough, soviet planes were mostly only test flown at E-Stelle Rechlin and then scrapped, while western planes, especially Spitfires, were tested much more extensively. Operational use of captured planes was limited to I./KG 200, which used B-17s and B-24s as transports for special operations. Ironically these aircraft were not used as cover, but because they were about the only long range aircraft available, apart from a few Ju 290s.

Btw, all you Spitfire fans, do you know the DB 605 Spitfire?
http://www.airwar.ru/image/i/xplane/spitdb605-i.jpg
I dont know why they fitted a Spit with a DB 605, but they did it. The plane reportedly flew well, but was destroyed in a bombing raid.

Those are wicked pics.

I love the B-17. Nazis may finally learn how to make a 4 engined bomber that doesnt burn after 20 min of flight.

Not good pics, resolution too small, and you can see jaggies on the aircraft. Also too grainy. You should program pic resolution to a slider to correct this before Oleg ruins it like trim. :P

Thanks for the pictures. Very interesting.

I think in Steven Ambrose's book on U.S. Sen. George McGovern's tour of duty as a B-25 pilot it's mentioned that they heard rumors of a captured B-17 piloted by a German crew that would slip into formation and then direct German fighters towards the formation. IIRC, McGovern heard that some bomber gunners shot at an approaching single B-17 that didn't respond to radio calls because they thought it might be piloted by an enemy crew.

Don't know if it was documented elsewhere. But it seems that U.S. pilots were aware of and on the look out for German pilots in captured aircraft.

Interesting: That B-17 is only one serial number digit different from the Memphis Belle.

The Belle was 124485
The one above (Wulf Hound, wasn't it?) is 124585.

Just an interesting coincidence.
