I bought the BoB DVD about a month ago (just came out)...And all I have to say is WOW what a great movie if you love WWII planes (oh course you all do!)

Funny I am 36 yrs old and never seen this movie until now. I would highly recommend all of you buying/renting it.

I thought I'd post some screenies to wet your appetite. This is a 2 hr and 12 min movie FULL of air combat and WWII planes.

Here is a just a smidge of what you'll see:

Enjoy!

Get a pic of when that Bf110 with contrail (I think) passes in front of the gunsight. That was smooth.

Also, lots of contrails in this movie. You don't hear much about this, but the English sky full of twisted contrails is one of the most vivid memories of people who lived then.

I have seen that movie.
Indeed, it's great, except some things...the aircrafts.
Why? Because there you can see 109E's with some atleast strange engines( those for sure don't even look like DB601),the same 109's, but fightning with Spitfire Mk IX !, and some others "bugs" like that(He111), there is no Me 110 in that movie!!!
Anyway it's really nice to see the fights.

Well I imagine there it was hard for them to get the correct (flying) versions of the planes for the movie.

Not like you can go pick up a flying version of a 110 or the correct version of a 109 just anywhere.. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

It's been a very long time since I've seen it... I think we didn't even have a colour TV at the time.... and I can't remember much...

Two questions:

1. How is the image quality and is it widescreen? (From what I've seen from the shots, it looks really good).

2. Sound quality: does it have a Dolby 5.1 surround track?

I'd like to buy it, but since I can't find it anywhere to rent around here I'm curious about the above items.

its been said here a few times

.... the reason the 109's look odd in BOB is they are Spanish post war Merlin powered ones ..

if you look at the pics in the post above you can see the exhaust are at the top of the cowl like a merlin "V" configuration rather than the bottom like a DB "inverted V" engine.

compare the 109's in the original post with this pic

Thanks, I love your sigs as well!

As for where I got it, I ordered online from DVD Empire (buy all my movies there)

http://www.dvdempire.com

They have always given me great service and ship times.

Paid like $9 (US) for it! It is in widescreen 16:9 and the image quality is very good especially since it was filmed in 1969

I don't think it is in surround sound but it is in Dolby Digital. Extra features are spartan, but hey it's $9!

Okay, I don't know what was suppoesed to pass in front of the gunsight, but it surely was a model anyway. It *looked* like a 110, judging from memory. I don't have a tape, so somebody check it out. I think it happened in the last big battle scene.

If you liked BOB, a must-see is Czech film, Dark Blue World, released last year on DVD [with czech/english audio and english subtitles]. It tells the story of two Czech pilots who flew for the RAF.
Portions of the aerial combat footage were unseen BOB film that was lost for years and found in a vault by the makers of the film. That footage was digitally remastered, with numbers and lettering changed on the Spitfires.

Hope to see more than a few Spitfires and other warbirds July 12th and 13th, when will be travelling to Duxford [from Syracuse, NY] for the Flying Legends Airshow. [Latest count had appr. 42 flyable aircraft, with 10 Spits'] If purchase digital camera by then, shall try to put some photos on this site.

Saw both BoB and Tora, Tora, Tora in the theater as kid thanks to my dad and they were films that really did make me interested in WW2.

My dad said was BoB the Spanish airforce vs the Confederate/collector airforce, as a reference to where a good deal of the planes were gotten from to make the film.

Hi all ,The Spainish airforce loaned out the Buchons [Me 109's] & the He 111's & aircrew for a donation i believe.
The Spits & Hurricanes were restored & large scale models used for the rarer aircraft.
http://dspace.dial.pipex.com/town/place/gdg18/battleofbritain.shtml

Battle of Britain
1968 *v
RAF/Luftwaffe- Micheal Caine and many others; Detailed story of the battle, with the most painstaking accuracy possible.

Huelva Beach in Spain played Dunkirk. El Corporo AB near Seville was also used. San Sebastion played Berlin. Tablada AB was the He 111 base in the big base/inspection scene. Over 25 of the 32 flying Spanish CASA 2.111D's there appeared in the scene.

These were Spanish built He 111H-16's (re-engined with Merlin 500-50's). Only 8 Hispano HA.1112M-1L Buchon ("Bf 109E") were still airworthy in Spain, but a lot of work got 18 in the air, and 10 more were able to be used in the ground scenes. These were Spanish built Bf 109 with Merlins. 2 CASA 352L also appeared. (Ju 52/3m built in Spain with ENMASA Beta engines).

After the Spanish filming, 1 CASA 2.111 and 17 HA.1112 (along with the sole Spit sent to Spain) went to the UK. One Buchon was a rare dual HA.1110K-1L.

In England the main shooting took place at RAF Duxford- the hangar that got blown up in the bombing scene quite upset the RAF who apparently still wanted it. RAF Debden was also used as a flying base. Katherine docks and Dragon Road in London were used as blitz sites.

The Spitfire air fleet used 12 flying Spitfires, 7 more taxiable, and 7 more static. (Mks. 1A, IIa, 3 Vb, Vc, 2 IXb, 2 IXc, 2 TrIX, XIV, 8 XVIe, 4 XIX, 1 F.21) 6 more Spitfires were used for spares. (Serials are too numerous to list. The IIa was an actual veteran of the Battle).

6 Hurricanes- 3 flying, 2 taxing, 1 static. Junkers Ju 88R-1, He 111H-23, Bf 109G-2, and Junkers Ju 87D-3 Stuka were supplied from RAF collections but in the end they were not used. For the numerous blowups mock-up Spitfires, Hurricanes, and even one He 111 were made. B-25J Mitchell (N6578D-Chapter IX) was used as a camera plane, as well as a Sa. 318B Alouette II helicopter.

3 Percival Proctors were converted to flying Ju-87 replicas but they were not used because they couldn't handle dive pull-outs. Models replaced them.

Lawrence Olivier and Ralph Richardson both flew Royal Navy gunnery trainers at 757 squadron, at Worthy Down, (Blackburn Sharks). Both were reassigned after too many w/o's. Olivier did in 5 planes in 7 weeks!

Driving force behind this movie was the producer, Benjamin Fisz. He had joined 303 Squad on Spits in late 1940, a few weeks after the Battle and later flew Mustangs then Meteors. He used the book "Narrow Margin" as his "bible" for story reference. Galland, Dowding, Bader, Lacey, Ostercamp, Gleve, Townsend, Tuck and Deere all visited the various sets during filming. Dowdings friends felt it gave him another year of life to see the movie.

Try and get hold of the book The Battle of Britain ,making of the film by Leonard Moseley,i believe Robert Rudnall has also published a couple of books.
Just as a side note my wifes uncle helped dig the holes in the ground for the explosives that blew up the hangar at Duxford, bloody heathen LOL,hope this helps Trumper

i believe the hurris were loaned from the portugese government,as every time i watch that film, i always stay to the end with the credits aswell.

which is imho disgusting that the uk couldnt provide enough hurris to do the job.

but its the same malaise as driving down the A1 last sunday i passed a lightning jet sitting by the roadside with graffiti all over it with just a shell left, according to a local who happens to be in my squadron it was owned by a company that went bust ,now no one wants to claim responsibility for it,what a waste of a fantastic peice of history!

Mothyp,i drove past that same lightning last weekend. It used to be in the middle of a transport depot or something like that but seems to have disappeared over the years but the aircraft has just been left to rot.
Many years ago whilst the depot [or whatever it was] was still there my mate & i managed to get right up to the aircraft & take some video tape of it,it was in better condition then.
Sad to see,bit like watching the Phantoms & lightnings being towed away for srap at R A F Wattisham a few years ago.

Just to add a footnote to this: I was present at RAF Manston when the '109's and '111's flew in from Spain. It was early evening and the sky was clouding over very quickly and getting quite dark. Against this backdrop it was very hard to see anything but suddenly someone spotted them - an amazing sight, all bunched together and looking for all the world as if they were coming in on a raid. They did one circuit before the weather got any worse then landed. Several of the 109s were having problems taxiing (visibility?), and at least one appeared to break down.
Unfortunately they were quickly parked and roped off, so we only got a close look when they taxiied across the road where we standing. Great experience though, very memorable.

As a footnote to my footnote, the following year we were gliding at RAF West Malling and 'discovered' one of the 111s in a hangar. The elevators were off and it appeared to be undergoing restoration, but being nosy little gits and there being no-one about we climbed in. In through the ventral gondola, I fell into the bomb bay and made our way forward. I sat in the pilot's seat and was amazed that the pedals appeared to be very much straight out in front of me. Like sitting on the floor. I believe the seat was adjustable, if not then the guys that flew those planes must have got numb bums by the end of a flight.

Wish I'd had a camera with me, but alas no.

Cheers!

If I had one my sig would be here.

Sadly ... I must say u cant.at least not trough the normal channels.
In sweden we have a "commity"? that consists of 4-5 people who decides what movies swedish people like.
A few years ago there was a program on swe TV about this matter. After watching it I understood why we get only the crap over here.
As i understood it, there was a set of rules wich ruled out
the category "historical movies". The exeption was
"love story historical movies" like the modern
"Pearl harbor"
and "lesser known actor" films was never considered.

Perhaps u can try this place:

Stenwalls(flyg & militaria)
BOX 17111 , 200 10 Malm√¬∂

Tel:040-12 77 03

they usually sell aviaition books(at least a few years ago)

and send by post.

If It Doesnt work there are only the obscure dealers.
(welcome to sweden)

I visited Kissimmee airport which is in Florida, USA 3 yrs ago while looking for a place to live. Well not only do they restore vintage air planes but, they have a fw-190, corsair, and more all being restored to flying condition.

Anyway, they have a mach spitfire that was used in the movie Battle of Britan. It is made of wood and painted to reproduce the look of the full-scale spit. I was very surprised when the owner of the musium pointed it out to me. I told him I knew exactly what it was! I've seen the movie many times. They used these wooden replicas to blow-up for the special effects etc... I think, I am not completely positive but, I belive the owner said it was the only surviving one.

You can look up kissimmee airport on a search engine. they have a really good web-site with all the aircraft they are refurbashing to flying condition.

Keep your wings level!
