When I was a wee lad back in the Dark Ages, I used to watch one crop dust our farm in Colorado (no, I was not a farm boy, my uncle rented the farm out). Early Saturday morning. Absolute rural quiet but for the ripping and snorting of the radial. Was quite an air show to watch the pilot evading the power lines and bomb the fields at nought feet with wheels right above the furrows---talk about flying. All this with clouds of whatever it was he was spraying obscuring the area. Naturally, I was in a fog of WWI flying aces watching him in action. Better seat than in any air show. No rules. So close I could read his maintenance stencils. Great stuff.

GREAT PHOTS!

They're nice aeroplanes to fly. They do almost everything important at about 70 like a Cessna 150/152, and climb at about the same rate (~500 fpm). Much nicer control harmonisation though. Visibility forward isn't that great, but in all other directions it's amazing. In fact you can look round to the left and see the tip of the right hand horizontal stabiliser if the fancy takes you.

The 2nd strangest thing about them is that you have to change hands to work the carb heat. The strangest is that the one I flew had a CD player!

Had a flight in one a few years ago. Pilot even let me take the stick and do some mild banks and climbs/dives. Had to keep my feet off the rudder pedals though.

Now whether the pilot still had his hand on the stick or not I don't know, but the feel was nothing like the loose feel one has with a js. There was positive feedbackbut not intantanious and one had to 'work' (ie muscle) to make the stick move.

I was recently told when asking the same question, anywhere from 50 to 80 thousand US would get you a flying machine.

Here are some more in the Navy scheme
and a rare N25-3 These were actaully built by the Navy I'm told and not subconracted.

For anyone who will be near Quad Cities on Labour Day weekend, there will be the annual Steerman Fly In in Galesburg, IL

See here for more info http://www.stearmanflyin.com/

I have some in-laws there and the Fly In is quite a site.

I just spent the bulk of today flying around the hills in a Stearman. . .with a nice farmer tan to show for it. There's certainly something fun about open cockpit flying, low and slow, with a throaty radial roar to accompany the wind.

As far as pricing goes, 80-120K is typical for decent shape Stearmans. The 450 horse SuperStearman adds 20-40K to the cost. Much less than 80K and there is usually a crate or some recovering involved in getting the thing airworthy.

Type Stearman into the search field here to see what's listed right now: http://www.barnstormers.com/cat.php?mode=search

We still have one that does some dusting at the neighboring farms. I don't think it's a Steerman...too modern looking...but it's a bi-plane.

Sometimes I'll catch him coming home from work not a mile from the house. Everybody pulls over to watch him hit the fields on either side of the road. Everytime he goes over the road I swear he's going to hit the power lines or trees. Amazing to watch.
