View Full Version : The Engine/Flight Sounds - Generic or Realistic ?

I have often wondered how realistic the engine sounds are in FB, but have never seen a thread with any accurate info. on how the engine/flight sounds were developed and implemented in FB, or the original IL-2 for that matter. Having been to many airshows in the UK I have a good idea of what a WWII piston engined fighter should sound like and it is nothing like what I hear in FB. I can think of only one plane, the I-16, where the sound file seems to reflect the kind of guttural tractor lie noise of the original engine turning over (I heard the original thing on a Warbirds over Wanaka airshow video). The rest of the aircraft seem to have a very generic 'angry wasp' sort of sound in flight which changes little in flyby mode. There seems to be another slightly more guttural engine noise for bombers, but again it seems generic to all bombers. The B-17 sound was very disappointing.

Has anyone else noticed this ? have comments ? Or maybe my Audigy soundcard is just making a mockery of the wonderful Maddox sound engineering that I have obviously been missing for two years ? http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Generic with a capital G. On the plus side I'm able to save $$ by sticking with onboard AC97 sound and set the FB sound settings to "dumbed down" and not miss anything, regrettably, in the case of MG firing 5 Km away. I also hear Me-109s trying to sneak up from behind me, from inside the cockpit of Hurri, before CrazyIvan has a chance to shoot me http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

I think the one disappointment most of us have w/ FB is the sound. IMO IL2 sounds much better. I don't know how accurate the engine sounds are, but I suspect they're not very.

They are quite generic, but pretty good generic ones, compared to OTHER sims...install space / dev. time / etc

Btw, a sound issue I have, perhaps it's a known issue: Some AAA guns play at max volume no matter how far away I am from them. Scares the crap out of me when there is an unfamiliar gun sounds rattling just as loud as my own, when I thought I was alone! Anybody?

Yes, the loud AA fire from some units is a known issue. I saw it today when testing the UQMG, but I don't know much about it.

Generic, totally.

Ever listened to a .wav of a Merlin? Huge difference than what is in the game, though the IL2 and HE111 sound pretty good externally. In fact, they sound more like fighters than the fighters do.

olaleier, there is a fix for that, though I apologize that I do not recall the link. It has something to do with specific DLL files I believe.

Hopefully someone will point you in the right direction.

There are things that the FB sound engine does amazingly that using pre-recorded sounds would not be able to do. I sincerely hope that in BoB they work on how they do things so that Merlin engines actually sound like Merlin engines (or much closer to it).

For now, I can more than live with it...it does a good job most days. That said - sound can always be improved and sound quality/artistry aside there are bugs that are in need of an urgent fix.

worst engine sounds out of any flight sim out there, best definatly have to go to janes wwii fighters and cfs2's actual dat recordings.

Im all for a new sound engine for bob, the synth maybe the most advanced sound system ever made for a flight sim but damn does it sound like crap even on my 200w with dolby 5.1 which its supposable made for

loud flak sounds, hearing gunfire from miles away, hearing planes on your tail.

Thanks for the comments guys - sounds like we are all in agreement then on the generic nature of the sounds. If they could accurately imitate the I-16 sound I don't see why this cannot be transferred to other aircraft, maybe something to do with file size and the complexity of chamging sounds in differnet flying scenarios. Here's hoping they sort something out for BoB

I wonder why they couldnt keep the IL2 sounds and just add the FB sounds for the new planes? Why did they have to change the entire sound engine?

True. What's more, I have wondered why, since they did rebuild to sound engine anyway, that they didn't rebuild it to accomodate better sounds for each plane?

I realize that if every plane in the mission was running very detailed sound recordings (my DC3 in FS2004 has nearly 20MB worth of sounds) that you'd have some problems with performance. But still, it would have been better to have the AI sound generic, and hear your own engine in better quality, where it would matter most.

Maybe in BoB.

I think that although generic, the sounds are pretty darn good and they are a far cry above what MS did for CFS3. Instead of going and gettin ghte actual sounds, MS just took sounds from their FS sieres and mixed them in there, thus, their Sptifire sounds EXACLTY like a C-182 and nowhere near like a merlin
