View Full Version : Hats off to full real servers

I just wanted to thank all of the guys running full real servers on HL. I really get a kick out of scanning the skies looking for other aircraft...and then having to identify them as friendly or enemy. With realistic settings, somehow it is more satisfying to shoot down another pilot or avoid being shot down. I feel like I've accomplished something when I complete a bombing run and return to base. Same goes for the guys running scripted servers...those are great.

Just a random question for the forum: does anyone taxi anymore? I must be the only guy online that bothers to taxi to the end of the runway before taking off. I was on a scripted server the other night and had another guy fly right into the side of my IL2 because he was trying to take off ACROSS the runway. I laughed, but it seems to be getting more common.

It's impatience. That and the fact that it's so weird trying to taxi in FB. Wish we had separate brakes. Didn't the planes we fly have a brake setup like that? I can't imagine they push both brake pedals AND turned the rudder (which also used the foot pedals). It would make it much easier to be able to brake just the left or right. It's bad enough that we can't steer that tailwheel!

well technicly there are left and right brakes, if you hold in the brake button and do right rudder, it applys the brake to the right wheel even more, when you go full right rudder the right wheel brake is fully enguaged and the left is fully released

I too want to thank you FR servers or almost FR.
I ejoy it most when u see teammates tags but not the enemies.(when u have small screen) Its to demanding to "investegate"
all planes near by to discover theyre all friendlies.(since most also fly undiciplined to target)
I think the one who is running the server can decide at what range the icons(tags) will be visible?

I wholeheartedly agree. This has to be one of the most pleasurable experiences that one can do in a sim. Here's to the patch providing more nourishment to my full real senses.

OMG could we be cosmic twins? Whenever I play I always taxi real slow (to be sure not to hit anybody) to the tip of the runway. (after letting the engine warm up of course) then, I send a message to my teamates asking if the runway is clear, and up, up and away I go!

I always taxi too, but I'M used to be alone when I take off. Yesterday I taxied towards the runway and at the same time, another plane was landing... Hope the guy was not that angry... I'm more carefull now but should do like you do and tell everyone I'm taxiing....

In the old days of IL2 there was an "unofficial" rule of take off on taxi ways and land on the runway. It sorta worked as a de facto air traffic control but doesnt seem so common anymore.

if you like FR, come try VOW

the relief of seeing the base after stressful fight, and stressful navigation, the satisfaction of having fulfilled your mission goals, or having survived in spite of having failed, the tension while trying to identify that contact flying toward you...

Wunderbar!!!

Yes, but unfortunately, you have to hold the brake. The airplane doesn't even really start to turn until almost stopped.. and if you're really cooking you can swing that tail around quick! What I would like is just some way of steering with out the brakes. You know what I mean? Turn the rudder on the ground, it turns the nose wheel. I'm just spoiled by MSFS2002, is all

I always taxi.

And if you think turning your fighter's difficult, try a fugging TB3. Differential power seems to be the only way in that beast. At least Heinkels respond to rudder on the ground.

Gimme more bombers in the addon, I love those things.

The other day I was flying full real (with the speedbar off of course) After I let my engine warm up for 5 minutes I was about to begin my journey to the far end of the runway in order to orient myself to the proper takeoff position. Just as I was about to engage my throttle I nocided that I could not see my compass! It was hidden behind my gunsight apparatus and there was nothing I could do to make it visible. Seeing as how no full real pilot would ever take off without the ability to navigate properly, I did the only thing any full real pilot should do. I taxied back to my starting location and selected a different plane. When I noticed that some pilots were still using this plane where one could not see the compass, I warned them but they didn't listen. *Sigh* Looks like I can't escape the arcade no matter where I go.

Not only do I like proper taxiing, I like to use nav and landing lights when landing, and when I land I like to park my plane near the fuel depot/truck to help out the ground crew with getting me back in the air quickly /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

But, I've gotta say, I like to see my plane on the map. I was playing in a server last night that was a HUGE map and no map icons. I navigated fine but it was trickier than I'd prefer I suppose.

RBJ! Only the other week you were extolling the virtues of cockpit off and demeaning those that liked full real. Have you seen the light?

You'll be getting a TrackIR next!

And using smileys.

I bet we don't see you using Indicating Backward Tailwheel Lights though.

Cheers.

Let's start a taxi campaign, yes? We just need to encourage it ! I loved watching those WWII planes take off in Aces High. People just need to find the fun in it.

Now if I'm under attack, I will take off like a maniac though, lol!

I like Full-Real too and thankfully survived a couple of VOW missions. The only annoyance for me is having no waypoint icon on the map, it means I usually spend longer getting back to base than the rest of the flight!
I reckon you need to go in with good wingman on RW to navigate back to base quickly (if they survive).

Yes yes. Always play full real on password protected servers with close friends that you can trust on Rodger Wilco. Anything else is just arcade if you think about it.

You can get rudder authority when moving slowly by using the prop wash. Just apply rudder in the direction you want to turn and give a burst of full throttle for half a second or so.

Sorry that I am regurgitating an old post, but how the heck do you fight full real with 1024X768 (my max res with acceptable FPS)? When flyin 109 that opaque glass and those crossbars just kills my manual (MOUSE-IR) track on the other planes, Do all of you full real people have 21 inch monitors and high res settings? I can almost never tell plane types until they start firing on me. I can see how track IR would help somewhat though.

About taxiing I agree to a point. Last time in HL I also got sidswiped by my teammate while I was slowly taxiing and then I kept getting vulched on my way to the end of the runway which made it essential to gun it immendiately after respawning. That taxiing thing only works on the right servers

full real = highest difficulty.

For those challenged at the highest level of difficulty find satisfaction in full real.

Simple as that http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

You want easier - then you can turn on settings to help out, like padlock.

I don't think anyone is saying it's 'real' - just hard http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

No taxi = Auto kick

At least it should be. Or your plane should become a propeller plow. It's annoying seeing folks in FR servers not bother to taxi. In DF, well, it's just arcade fun anyway so go right ahead.

I only run 1024x768 and have problems identifying enemy too AND I have TIR so it's not just you. But then again, I'm not an ace yet and still learning.

Also, I prefer friendly icons (ranged) but maybe that's a bit of the arcade in me hanging on. It kind of makes up for your lack of depth perception./i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

I'd love to get into a game of VOW, sounds like a blast and right up my alley. But waitaminute...doesn't VOW have padlock radar detector enabled? Ah, nevermind then. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

Not really. Without any icons no a/c hardly ever gets shot down. So staying is really more simple than scoring a kill. It generally bores me.

XyZspineZyX
07-11-2003, 05:44 AM
I wish that the developers would make the darkened glass an option , though it would be nice if reflections stayed on , this would increase FPS and make it easier to see outside overly darkened cockpit. Need more contrast looking outside in cockpit - the view is far more obscured than reality.

XyZspineZyX
07-11-2003, 08:33 AM
Full realism is the way to go! That's why it's called a sim! I love looking out sideways from my 262 and seeing the flaps drop as the turbulence rocks the wole wing. It's so damed realistic! Then I stat thinking about what it'd be like to have actually flown one until I find myself flying across the aerodrome in five little pieces!

XyZspineZyX
07-11-2003, 08:54 AM
Only on FR servers you can employ the same historical tactics as the real WWII pilots did. In FR settings this GAME is turning itself into real SIM.

XyZspineZyX
07-11-2003, 09:26 AM
I agree with the initial post, in full real you get the most challenge, especially if you go into combat as a team, but with no icons the TrackIR really shows it's worth and you have to get really close before opening fire to identify the enemy.
The only thing I absolutely don't find realistic is the "head shake"-thing, what did they think off when they implemented this... that it was a headbanging rockconcert/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif
If my head was shaking like that every time I go flying I would end up with a cronical headache in a mental institution/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif
The thing about starting across the runway? Try that in real life and see some pi$$ed off air traffic controllers /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif
