I remember sailing into Scapa Flow and then Loch Ewe, and not finding a single ship moored... that was disappointing enough to still remember http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Ghost ships in tutorial (torps passing through)
Crew staying on the bridge when submerged.
Dissapearing crewmembers if left in (don't know which compartment when docking).
Some countries had wrong dates regarding Allied-Enemy status.
Escorts accidentaly shooting each other to bits (I don't know if that has ever been fixed)

Saving a game with ships nearby and after reloading that game the ships lost their AI and continued at their present course stubbornly until they ran ashore or crashed into each other. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

That was never fixed. The bug made it straight into SH-IV and i never checked if its still in SH-V aswell.

I bet it is http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/shady.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

I was unaware of this game when it was first released. My DVD has version 1.3 but the 1.4b patch was out. I always make a habit of checking a company's website for the latest patch when I buy software and for drivers when I buy hardware. Most of the time, the disc released for a product is already out of date.

Because I was late to the game I missed out on some of the spectacular bugs. Some things still annoy me, but fortunately we can work around them to the point that the remaining ones are not real deal breakers. It is a shame that Ubi stopped support for the game. The fact that five years later it still retains a fanatical core of supporters and is still drawing new players should tell Ubi that they have a gem on their hands, if only they'd do the work to give it a final polishing.

If I were very wealthy I would buy the source code from Ubi, release it to a team of dedicated modders and have them finish it as it should have been. Some of the remaining bugs or features that grind my stern are the crew management model [five officers but only four berths] having to manually shuffle men around instead of allowing an automatic shift rotation as they would in real life. However, you could still incorporate real life concepts such as long term patrol fatigue, battle stress and so forth, so that in spite of remaining fuel, armaments and stores, at some point the Kaleun will be faced with the decision to return to base. I do not like that when you surface, everybody goes up top except for the watch commander. I do not like that I still have to toggle through the flak gunners to wake them up, but on the other hand since I dive upon sighting aircraft I don't very often have to defend the boat.

The swastika issue was a fiasco right from the start. What kind of idiot buys a game that depicts a part of the military of the Third Reich then complains about offensive imagery? I don't like Commies, so I don't buy a Commie themed game and then complain about the hammer and sickle as the symbol of the Gulag and state oppression. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot was that all about? Such folks should cut their cable subscriptions and then rent Mr. Rogers videos and live in La La Land while they hold their Barney doll.

I dislike the predictability of certain A.I. routines, such as automatic zigzagging of convoys for exactly one hour, whereas in real life it was very difficult to get a convoy to zigzag in unison. On the other hand, it is too easy in the game to intercept convoys, especially since they so rarely make a real course change, such as at nightfall or when a U-boat was known to be nearby. This frustrated even the most elite of U-boat commmanders and was one reason why they only managed 100K to 200K per career, if fortunate.

I do not like the swarming effect of aircraft at periods of the war when they were very scarce. If Coastal Command sent a squadron of Sunderlands after one U-boat, many thousands of square miles of ocean would go unpatrolled. And what's with using Hurricane fighters on ASW patrol while other historical ASW aircraft are omitted?

I could go on and on, but I prefer to focus on the positive aspects of the game. Much of what was broken has been addressed by such addons and mods as SH3 Commander and supermods. I have been told that I do seem to cheer for one supermod particularly, so I will not mention it by name at the present, but they are all positive contributions. Even though I make mention of my favourite supermod when a new member asks which mod they should get, I also mention the major alternatives, so on the whole I do think I am fair, though biased.

To top it all off, the SH3 fan community is a haven on the internet. There is very little rancour or bickering and belittling of "newbs." For the most part it is an older community, but welcomes Kaleuns of all ages. I liken my friends here to my church community. We have an assortment of folks, from all walks of life but united in a fellowship of common interest, which facilitates an easy going atmosphere though we do from time to time get into it. In the end, we are usually still friends.

P.S. Did I mention Star Force? Ubi should adopt a program whereby people with a SF disc could redeem it for a new disc.

brings back some memories...i forgot about the watchcrew on deck @300 fsw. i agree this is a pretty laid back place to talk and discuss issues of all kinds. the thing i find interesting is that almost all of us are former or current military. that would be a site to see all of us serving together as a "squad" or "crew"

No one seems to have remembered to mention the CTD bug which is around the Black Sea in the navigation map screen.
That was and is the most annoying bug of SH3. One of the reasons I mostly play SH4, if I play at all. I don't really have the time anymore unfortunately. And if then I want a good game.

EDIT:
And I'm one of the real old kaleuns here. Registered before the release of SH3, which was March 18th 2005.

This, also not fixed. Note the axis of rotation

1000+m deep piers are still around. I forget where that is, probably Curacao

Crew on deck still appears there, with their new water-lungs

My favorite, when flags wave behind the ship, regardless the ship's orientation... I can't find a better one

I had another one somewhere, where a DD sailed through a dock and got stuck midway...

And the rare bug where my torpedoes would pass through a moored ship, through a dock behind, and into the beach... Only happened 3 times, thankfully

I bought SH3 without the 1.4 and with you guys help, showed me the way. Like, Das Boote and the book is our "Bible" and so on. Plus, I remember Vikinggrandad and his patience to help me out. For me, he is missed.
I whole heartedly agree that this Forum is rather laid back and very helpful for the newbies with very few exceptions. And those who do not want to play nicely, well, that's taken care of swiftly.

Anyone remember the 'bouncing trawler'? If an asw trawler dropped dc's in shallow water it was blown high into the air and bounced all over the ocean - still in one piece!

I rember the bouncing trawler. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif How about the "Chaos ports" where you pull into a port(frendly or enemny)and ships are on fire stuck half inside the docks. Or(this got fixed in the 1st patch) the nav map with no dock facilitys on it. I dont know how many times I ramed into a wall because of that! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/51.gif
