Give me the number of the type IX that, in 1944, changed her conning tower for another one quite unusual to see on that type of sub. Give me what kind of new conning tower it was too.
It was for a design sea test.

good luck http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Nonono, I had that one first and he did not even say "comes closer". So I asume its the wrong way and the aktual number is somewhat higher than the one ark posted because his guess was already close (in millions) http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

By process of elimination my dear watson it has to be U-38 or U-39 http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif Though what they did to it i dont know... did i get half the question?

Interesting question.

Maybe you're refering to the subs
U-861, U-874, U-875 and U-883, that had their conning-towers removed completely as they were transformed into transport-subs?

But actually this was early 1945...

Ah, I think I know what you want to see - Focke-Achgelis Fa 330 ‚ĽBachstelze‚ę ?

Dom you are SERIOUSLY very close!!!
Capt, no and no. But nice tries.

Next try to find what is this mysterious conning tower that replaced the good old IX one.

A giant gun for shelling england? That sounds like one of the crazy type things they would do in deperate 1944.

u2336
03-10-2005, 07:02 AM
nope dom. As I wrote, it was for a design validation test.

you are on the good way though. How did you do your elimination ? Because U38 or U39 are so close from the right number...

Dominicrigg

Are they not the right subs?

I looked at the list of type 9s. And saw those two were the only ones who survived past the date you said. Though i couldnt find any details about them http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif im at a dead end!! We need someone cleverer to figure this one out!

u2336
03-10-2005, 07:48 AM
keep searching, the U38 and U39 are not the only ones that survived 1944.....check with www.uboat.net (http://www.uboat.net)

u2336
03-10-2005, 07:53 AM
but I told you.....with the U38 and U39 you were close....and it is about only ONE sub.

U-37? Type IX that scuttled on 8 May, 1945 in Sonderburg Bay. Quite a famous boat, sunk 53 ships in 11 patrols.

u2336
03-10-2005, 08:00 AM
but ??? we have a funny guy among us !!
It is not possible as the U-38.5 sank in 1943 in my grandpa tub !...silly !!! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif

I‚¬īve searched U-Boot net but couldn`t find anything related to the conning tower test.
Then again I am at work and not properly concentrated!

Is it the U-37 ?

u2336
03-10-2005, 10:13 AM
yes. the type IXA U-37, served as a test boat from 1944 to the end of war. But what was this conning tower test ? For what new uboot ? Hey guys....I would normally call that a CLUE !

Yes you did help!!! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
But from the look of it I think it was some sort of a hybrid, I mean it is not entirely enclosed at the top.
I was wandering if there is some cutout of type XXl conning tower. I was allways interesting how they operated those flaks.

u2336
03-10-2005, 10:53 AM
they were operated remotly (like a B29 turret) with the hydraulic fluid (that operated the rudders, planes...)
It seems that the turrets were not completly watertight and caused many problems in the hydraulic circuit (that caused rudder and planes failures...)

COuld you pleaste tell me which book it is? It will be in my list of summer readings!

u2336
03-10-2005, 12:52 PM
If you can read german :

U-Boottyp XXI by E.R√¬∂ssler ISBN 3-7637-5806-2
U2540 by E.Wetzel ISBN 3-86070-556-3

In english :

The U-boat "the evolution and technical history of german submarines" by E.R√¬∂ssler ISBN 0-304-36120-8

Anyway in all these books you will find precious plans, drawings and pictures too beside the incredible work of research the authors did.

I am currently building a 1/40 type XXI model and these books are a perfect source.
