Hmmmmmm,

Having a tough time trying to decide on this one?

Apparently the larger IX subs were regulated to the open Atlantic while the smaller VII series were sent to the Med. Something about the size of the IX series not being condusive to the Med due to Allied Air cover.

Is this reflected in the Campaign patrol areas you are sent to by BdU, when choosing to transfer to a differnt Flotilla, or moving up to a different class of sub?

If so I have a serius decision to make??? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

In my first campaign I operated in a IX and I can say that yes, the patrol zones are much further away. I participated in Operation Drumbeat and it was great fun, but I understand that the IXs have a tough time of it later in the war following increased Allied ASW capability.

The patrol zone you are assigned is mostly dependant on the Flotilla you belong to. The type IX flotillas (2nd, 10th, 12th) tend to have the BFE assignments. You won't be assigned a patrol inside the Med unless you belong to the 29th. The rest tend to be confined to the mid/north Atlantic. I'm pretty sure that if you took and IX and transferred to, say, the 7th Flotilla, you'd start finding your assignments to be much closer. The farthest I've ever been assigned in 7th was AD79, just southwest of Iceland. I'm also fairly sure that you could take a IX, and transfer into the 29th at La Spezia with it, but I don't know how well that would work out.

Yeah, I'm guessing that it'll be hard, staying hidden, under the surface, in that big a boat, in the shallow coastal areas of the Med!

Grab the IX and head to the Carribean and hunt down those unescorted tankers!

Good luck with the med thing. Gilbralter is such a fine cruise.

Of course if you find a 17 Mile wide opening to the med, swarming with Aircraft and DD's fun.. Go for it.
