Mmm good question. I first saw it many months ago when someone here posted it. Last night I was trawling through WW2 sites, just looking for information on The Hamburg and Dresden firestorms when one of my searches came up with this little gem. It was too good a pic to let disapear again but where I got it from?

Wow!! Thats an truly awsome pic dude!!

I saw a documentary on the History channel of something like this with the Hellcats.. Those Birds would literally always make it back home, even with out parts of wings and rudders....
Ive seen this in Forgotten Battles and it was truly awsome.

As a matter of fact, during a coop...I forgot who flew in it,
I was litterally flying like that. I couldnt even make the plane go down since everything was blown up....Other guys were already at the runway and they literally saw how I had to land three times. The good thing is that on the Third attempt, I was able to bring down my plane in one piece..
It was so unreal, it totally rocked !!!

The guys said, they saw how bad my plane was shot up and couldnt believe I had made it down in one piece...
This is the immersion of Forgotten Battles..
Is this Sim awsome or what?

Best,

Clear Skies and Tailwinds....

Yep FB is da bomb. I have taken a massive break from the online scene to focus more on the single player (3rd party campaigns) and general gunnery practice.

I was a dedicated P39 pilot but I burnt myself out flying that babe online. I have started being drawn more and more into the modmovers like the Stuka G and He-111 with 2 second bomb delay in the fuse. I can fly a couple of 500 pounders more or less through the hatch of a targeted tank now and that took a lot of work to learn. Its beautifull/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Then there is the Fw190. They are deadly in the BnZ and I love em now. I read a lot of bad press in the Olegs ready room that more or less said the plane was screwed.

Now that is a red rag to a bull for me and suddenly I was flying the Fw190 in the QMB, practicing like a wack job. its a difficult plane of that there is no doubt but flown correctly she can be a very satisfying plane to fly. Online? Not tried it yet. I am learning her at the moment. I cannot learn the characteristics of a plane online as I am always too busy chatting, dying or killing and paniking to get away from the scene where tracers will have drawn enemy eyes from afar.

The FMB allows me to practice without all that baggage but when I am ready I will no longer be flying the P39/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

The game rocks me/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

NeroMoura sent me a PM link to this picture that shows lightning can strike twice.

The pilot of this AC hit a factory smokestack while straffing a truck parked in an industrial center in northern Italy. He lost a couple of cylinders in his engine and 1,28 meters of his right wing. He was able to land in his airbase at Pizza and the ground crew took that photo.

Hi SmokeJaguar

Just awesome pictures you have to post them somewhere else, these jewels deserve to be shared, take a look at the Piranha squadron website (the complete url is at the bottom of my signature !)

Once in a while this forum unveils treasures like this one, glad to be here today !

Good flight to you !

Nonsense, I verified the joints twice!: This was the answer given by chief Mechanic Klaus Stoeffel to Oberst Lotar Von M├╝llenbrock when he complained about some strange vibrations in the wings of his Me-262 during take off. This picture show that Oberst Von M├╝llenbrock's fears were in fact quite real.

That did'nt take guts. What would take guts is to bail out. That aircraft was used mostly south Pacific, and leaving it would have meant shaking hands with the oceans more ravenous creatures, who seem to have had quite an appetite for US servicemen. I'd have stayed with it until it more resembled the classic aviators description of an airplane-an assortment of parts flying in close formation/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

"What would take guts is to bail out"

Damn right there, radkiller. Plus, the pilot would never have been able to bail out. The gunners would have been okay, but the moment the pilot let go of the stick and pedals that bird would have flipped right over and they would have hit the water at the same speed. A real 'damned if you do, damned if you don't' situation.

XyZspineZyX
06-19-2003, 12:17 AM
He didn't hit anything. The wing was lost due to a direct flak hit over Chichi Jima island. The fuselage was damaged as well. He flew back to his carrier and apparently on approach the tail fell off. All the crewmen survived.

ive seen actual pics of jugs in books with less wing left than that. about a couple feet. looked like a stub. i think the jug hit a pole of some sort....flew all the way back and landed fine. true story ... wish i could find the pic. it makes that plane look easy to land

Just as an FYI, and not to disagree with your general assessment...

The plane in question looks like a TBM, mainly due to the all dark blue paint job. TBM-3s were actually built by General Motors, not Grumman.

Okay, you saw the wing off of an airplane and fly it level then tell me it didn't take some willpower.

Whats a smokestack? What? it couldnt been posible to keep that in the sky? Anyhow, when i have got such and damage in IL2 i had no chance to keep it in the air.. even full rudder and right aileron would help.. it onl would slowly steep into a dive and chrash.. i think

XyZspineZyX

in relation to pic opening this thread. The pilot has the torque of the engine to help as well, if you notice the prop will turn to the right which will pull of the wrecked wing and take off some of the wheight so to speak

other than that he is one lucky bugger or a tallanted one at that to keep that thing airbourne

The more impressive counts are where the pilots are all shot up as well.

Yeah, there are some things that can be done well in CFS2, though most of them are done by 3rd party: http://people.ee.ethz.ch/~chapman/flightsims/p40.html

Everytime I see a picture or hear a story like this I wonder..Why is it that if I lose as much as 6" off of a wing, I tend to tumble into the ground. Oh sure, sometimes I can glide for a few hundred meters, but beyond that, nothing...Just asking.

You mean in FB? It isn't necessarily so everytime. You probably have to manage to stabilize the plane relatively quickly and keep it there. Don't expect FB to model reality THAT closely though.

My best story is the time in IL-2 when my P-39 was missing a rear left elevator after a collision with a FW and I brought it back to base. Set her down and broke the tail section off, but she was sitting on her gear. /i/smilies/16x16_robot-happy.gif

Having lots of altitude helps a lot, and don't even think of landing at normal speed. You need the extra speed to keep stability up.

These kinds of incidents is where modeling things like hydraulics damage and emergency procedures would make things really interesting. Doesn't belong to the genre unfortunately.
