On December 16th of last year I posted in the Community Help Forum about some pics I had seen a while back showing a modified X-45 stick (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/49310655/m/7211046783/r/7211046783#7211046783). I couldn't remember who posted it... but when I asked, as usual around here in no time I got the answers I was seeking. Sokol_1 posted and showed me the pics I was looking for. As many of you know I use the X-45 stick in combination with a MSFFB2 joystick and CH pedals. I primarily use the X-45 stick as a button bay. For a while now I have been thinking of doing this. Since I dont use the stick as a stick it just takes up space on my desk.. and the fact that there were two pots in it that I couldnt use was really annoying since the SST software is top notch. I attempted it on a broken spare I had to see if I could do it. The results were so so.. but it taught me what I needed to know. On my second attempt I achieved something a lot closer to my desired results. Here are pics of my just finsihed, fully functional ready to fly with "Franken45". I want to thank shotdownski and Sokol_1 for the inspiration some years ago, before I even got an X-45 I think...... and 531 Ghost who rekindled the flame with his Franken Potato (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/531Ghost/100_0109.jpg).
The thing works great.... The knob on the right of the throttle is the X pot.. I use it for prop pitch... and the one on the box is the Y pot.. I use that for rudder trim. The red button is the pinkie switch.... I am working on some new profiles.... using the pinkie switch... one for bombers.... the two black buttons are the trigger switches and the front fire button. The top is basically transplanted. I cut the base of the stick in half.... cut out the bottom side of the throttle and epoxied the bottom half of the stick to it. I used my Dremel tool to do the cutting. The throttle is bgasically intact save for the bottom right side cutout where the left half of the stick bottom is epoxied to it. I cut the cord going from the throttle to the stick to shorten it and plugged it into the board from the stick. I got a 15 pin male & female connector from an old assembly on one of the machines I fix so that I could just connect and disconnect the shortened throttle to stick cord easier since I wasnt quite sure how I would work it in. I bought two bags of switches and two packs of knobs from radio shack. I could have used smaller switches.. but I wanted them to be bigger. I also decided to use two knob sizes since I wanted the one on the throttle to be bigger.. I use my pinkie to adjust it in flight.

That's pretty cool.. but isn't it required to have the IL2 game box on the keyboard or next to the monitor for pictures? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

Another thread that should belong to the "DIY IL2 hardware" superthread.

Very nice pictures, showing me a tidy construction. Congratulations. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Bearcat, you said what you use the knobs you added for, but what do you use the standard knobs for? Just curious

Elevator & aileron trim.

Nice job BC. Here's to many hours of enjoyment with it. Thanks for the pics.

Side note: That's the same tower case I have on my rig I built 3 years ago last January. Plenty of room in there eh? Gonna use it on my next upgrade this summer.

And what is the white portion on the base to the left of your throttle on the FFB?

Nosey bunch ain't we? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

Nope.. and it helps immensely with trying to get my heading right or pointing out bogies.. there is another one out that is even better.... it has a B-25 on it.. but it also has the degrees in reverse.... so you can calculate vectors easier.

I dont use pirated versions of FB and I dont appreciate the insinuation, smiley face or not. If I were using pirated software I wouldnt be stupid enough to post pictures of it.. so either way your post is insulting.

It wasn't a smiley...it was a wink indicating irony or, if you prefer, a joke.

Must have got out of bed on the wrong side or something...

Very nice BC your an insperation to all of us http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

But I suspect that this is not the final? you could remove the old face plate from that unit and replace it with a nice new perspex one with out a big ol hole in it couldn't yah? Now that would be the dee's bee's

P.S I am armed also, so if you try and throttle (no pun intended) me I can defend my self

Rgr that Boosh.. before I go any farther I want to use it for a spell... but I do intend to cover that.
and Yeah Rocky.. The plastic cover sounds good. Looking at what Orhiem has do e with his is a good idea. I will keep the top part intact though... I like the compactness of having all those switches in one small space like that.

I is too much to go into for now.. but let it suffice to say that I have room for every command in the sim on my throttle... all weps and flight controls are on the MS stick... but I do have the bomber commands also programed into the throttle.. Ill try to make a map of it all. The top of the modified stick base can screw off... so all I have to do is just unscrew it.. take off the pots and switches... re cover it.. drill new holes and put it back on.

@Balrog..
The lid is not just plate.. The plate is actually very very thin and underneath is you will find some heavy duty things space stealing plastic... u need a big saw for that http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Bear, remember to leave a rim around where you can fit the new lid on,, well you saw on my thread..

Rgr that I did dismantle mine a while back but not the stick portion. Still last day at work today so I should have some time to poke around with it a bit over the next couple of days.

No big deal with the key mapping Bear I was realy just curious what the dial on the side of your throttle lever was connected to.

Great work !
