PLS in your needed time off think of a way to chose in dogfight online play Detailed clouds only for the server. It seems to me that everyone here is always pushing for the little guy. I'm a teacher in the US and I don't make much and this is my release so alot of my fun income goes into my PC and internet connection speed. I would like to set up a server that has the difficulty of Detailed Clouds. This should not be hard. Objective give the server the choice to create the environment that will give the high end users the best enjoyment. When I'm pushing high frame rates in the 50s with detailed clouds and it looks so much better. However online I wont fly in that setting because it puts me at a disadvantage.

If it is not to hard PLS consider it for us high end users setting there server netspeed to 25000.

I second this request.

It is very annoying when you attempt to use clouds for cover or tactics only to find yourself being shot at. I use full detailed clouds but online when people use medium clouds the get a big advantage. Please allow clouds to be set by the server only, that way if clouds are set to medium on the server I get medium clouds.

Annoying?...yes. But I still leave "Detailed Clouds' on my machine all the time. It really suXorz to think I'm all but invisible in a cloud bank attempting to slink away to safety only to be shot right in the middle of it.

A server-side control on this option would be nice.

BUmp!Made it a server option, medium clouds was developed for 4 years old machines, really only a few ones need that. Its not a fps killer.
I think it will be specially important with the overcast patch.

Knight explain about the 25000 speed?

And i agreed i play always with detailed clouds.
The map In "PROWAR" are setup to have detailed Clouds and they play a very imporatant roll in any battles and strategy.

For me playing with medium clouds is considerate as a cheat. period and it would be nice to have on a server side the ability to leave them ON and overwrite the client setting connecting to the server.

S!,
Bump. I'm in full agreement for server side dictating cloud settings. It's very annoying knowing that you just shook a bandit by twisting and turning in a cloud only to be mistaken and have your tail shot off.

Just an observation from an offliner here...

Simple Clouds need to be Patched out of the sim. Nobody needs them anymore even with Trident Integrated motherboard grafix which I first used for FB and it ran Detail Clouds just fine.

This is what we have now. This has been debated hottly in the past, however I believe it has been proven definitevely (about 5 times) that 'medium' clouds and 'detailed' clouds are the same at close ranges (under 5km, possibly 10km, if memory serves possibly increased with PF).

The clouds are a feature of the Map, and thus the same clouds are on everyone's machines, 'detailed' settings merely draw clouds out to a longer range.

There is NO advantage to flying 'medium' clouds, in fact it is normally a disadvantage, due to the inability to see clouds to hide/position in at longer distances. It is not possible to turn clouds off on your machine, when a server has clouds set to on. I'm unfamiliar with the MP_Dotrange command, however this could possibly allow long distance dots to be seen by some players, and not by others, however this has not been recently tested, that I know of.

Agreed, server should control cloud detail for EVERYONE -- Anything less is a cheat --

Sorry, but that's totally wrong.
Check for yourself: Two captures, first one with medium clouds and the other with detailed

Lignite,

There really is a big difference between medium and detailed clouds on my rig. At medium the clouds largly dissapear at all ranges, I think I'm in cloud cover but the guy who uses medium clouds is able to see me totally. Now I will stop short of calling anyone who uses medium clouds a cheat but there is not a single system out there that cannot display detailed clouds at good FPS. The only reason people use medium clouds online is because it gives a big advantage in cloudy servers.

There is a big difference. I used to always fly with medium clouds and assumed it was server side controlled. Only recently with the great optimisation of FB/PF have I gone fully clouds - and as the above pics show, it`s a BIG difference.

It`s stupid that this cannot be server-controlled.

I don't fly online but had always assumed that clouds were set by the server.

Seems silly to me. Needs to be fixed.

I second the request of RAF238thKnight - it would be great, to have a server side option, to force detailed clouds on all clients.

This is interesting...I always thought the server set the cloud detail.

Just last night I chased a Mustang into the clouds, that I assumed he was going to use for cover. I stayed on the edge of cloud and was able to see him thru most of the fight. After shooting him down he basicly suggested I had gamed the game. I've always use detailed clouds but wonder if the cloud position is exactly the same for both of us. I hardly lost contact with him during the fight and he seemed to be more on the edge of clouds than in them.

detailed clouds are very cool - I use detailed.

I'd like the server to enforce it as well.

thing is - imo, if you turn off the detail you get penalized:

1. you can't see the dot as well cause you don't have the white backdrop

2. you realize why you can't see something. With no detail, the clouds just poof into existence. With detailed, you know they are there.

So - although some could say it's bad to have them non detailed - I think it's more advantageous to use detailed anyway.

Is clouds such a frame hit that this even needs to be an option? Forget server option - make it no option - make it detailed all the time!!!

Apologies, as I had the distances wrong for cloud drawing (IMHO, I believe they have changed, maybe with PF). The new medium cloud draw distance may be about 3km (I'm reasonably sure it used to be 5km).

Inside 3km, the clouds are drawn the same regardless of 'detailed' or 'medium' clouds. Meyer's screenshot shows clouds much further away than that (note the clouds shadows on the ground from 'perfect' mode, even though you can't see the clouds the game knows they are their, because they are a feature of the map). I have some screen shots illustrating this range, but don't have time to upload them today, will try later.

I agree that it would be a nice option to enforce 'detailed' clouds now with our more modern machines, to ensure an even more equal play field than we already have in regards to 'setting up' a realistic aerial combat. But rest assured that at close dogfight ranges the clouds are there for everybody (when enabled by the server).
