View Full Version : Flying the SM.79

Though the debate about the SM.79 damage model is interesting, and will no doubt continue, it seems to me that we need another thread on actually flying this beauty/beast (delete as appropriate). I haven't done a great deal with it as I'm a hopeless level bomber, though the torpedo option looks promising. It is an unusual aircraft though, so I'd be interested to see what others to say about getting the best out of it.

In particular, what do people think of the automatic flaps? I was flying one online the other day (on a server on my own - I was just checking 4.09m online, and spotted the SM.79 as an option). The auto-flaps seem to make climbing awkward, as I'd got trimmed for level flight, changed prop pitch for cruise, and then decided I needed to climb a little higher to avoid terrain. I fed in a little up elevator trim, but soon found I was decelerating as the flaps started to deploy - throwing the plane well off trim in the process. Though I managed to get back into stable flight without too much difficulty, I can imagine that this can catch you out if you do not pay attention. It is also possible to run into problems on landing approach, with the flaps starting to raise if you push the nose down - this is much more dangerous, though if you increase power and pull the nose up (gently!), you can get the flaps back down - at this point it might be safer to go around and try again.

Are there any other points about this aircraft that need special consideration? I will do a bit more experimentation in the next few days and see what else becomes apparent.

(Can I ask people NOT to get into discussions about the DM in this thread, but stay with the existing one for this)

I've found that I really love the auto flaps. I seem to have far smoother landings and approaches in the Sm79 compared to other large aircraft. On the other hand, I also don't climb at the 'best climb' speed, since I find I have way too little control. I generally climb at ~250kmh IAS. Or, once I'm high enough (~3000), I generally climb at an even faster IAS, sticking on coarse pitch for that.

Someone said something about 3 speeds backwards and 1 forward?

Whats that all about? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

Just climb at faster speed than 200kph IAS, which is roughly the speed at which flaps deploy. Also, don't forget to "shift into a lower gear" (i.e. raise prop pitch above 50%) during climbing, or your speed will fall.

PanzerAce, I've found the same thing - accelerating to well above 'flaps up' speed (220Km/h it think it was) and then climbing is safer.

I've just tried to torpedo a carrier. Even with ROF set at 10 (i.e 1/10th realistic rate of fire), I still got peppered with holes, and also missed by a mile - I need to figure out aiming properly. The SM.79 is certainly tough, I had holes in the wings, number 3 engine smoking (later cut out), and number 2 engine on reduced power - couldn't climb much, but made it back to base ok. Forgot to save the track, but I'll have another try.

It was bad joke about Italians. They had a reputation for not being keen on fighting during WW2. There tanks were supposed to have 3 reverse gears, and one forward gear just in case we attacked from behind. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/disagree.gif

Actually, it is quite unfair, the Italians were capable fighters when they had decent equipment, and were motivated to fight. They were often poorly equipped though, and many had little commitment to the war anyway.

What do you think of flying the SM.79, Owl?

EDIT

TinyTim: right about the prop pitch - it's easy to forget this.

I'v only flown it once. I will fly it some more later, then I will tell you what I think. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Right now I am greatly obsessed with the B-534, followed by the CR-42.

I've noticed one thing with the SM.79:

Take a good look around the interior - you can see most of it from the bomb aimer's position. There are some nice details. However, the bomb aimer's pencil does not roll around on the map - this is clearly a bug. Should I report this to TD? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

I would, thats a major flaw in the PM (pencil modeling) of the SM79. But I'm afraid they might pork its physics if too many people complain http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif

Becuase the pencil is magnetic!

Does the pencil really exist, or is it just part of our personal imaginations. We expect it to be there so it is. But we accept the fact that it isn't rolling in game, so it wont. Its all relative to the beholder... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

We had a LOT of fun in the other pencil thread http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

The pencil in the TB3 works.

Anyways. It can take a massive amount of damadge.

And is fun-to-fly.

Its a beautiful plane! Its good that you have to think a bit when flying it.

I had much fun with her online yesterday, against Hurricanes and Avias ... a blast ! Fast, sturdy and well armed.

As other people pointed out, the crews loved the SM.79, and the many books written about her use as torpedo bomber are full with praises. I remember only critics for the lack of crew protection and the tendency to burn, as you would expect from a wooden plane.

Wood in IL-2 comes from a different tree.

I rather like it, as I tend to do best in anti-shipping attacks online, but for some reason I can't get the pitch change to show up onscreen, and I really don't know if they are happening.

I used both my add/decrease and a 40% and 60% key command that I added, but I still can't tell. Is the pitch rate supposed to show onscreen like the other AC, or am I missing something.....again?

I like the auto flaps from what I've experienced so far.

If I recall, that would be the rare Lorica Lignea tree that Oleg created the infamous DeltaWoodŽ from? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/winky.gif

If the plane is not modeled to have manual prop pitch or rpm then it won't show. If you have not set for manual when the plane
does have automatic or manual then it will not show. Lastly if you have CEM off it will not. Those are the ways I know to not
have it work by keys/buttons/rotary/slider.

Enforcer, look at the center console of the cockpit in the SM79,just under the throttles. When you change the 'pitch',you will see 3 levers move either all the way up or down.Coarse is up.

This plane is great. I totally love the brake lever! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

The 3D model and the cockpit are just excellent! Could spend hours just flying around with it.

Only drawback is that the bombs don't skip, will have to get used to that.

Any particular reason why the bombs don't skip ?

They are dropped vertically. For them to be horizontal (though only momentarily before pointing nose down), you have to be high enough, which by then means that they won't skip anyway.

I hear AAA is working on a fountain pen mod for the bomb aimer's position, the fps hit is a bit high right now http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
