While flying escort i sometimes run in to a hostile bombgroup heading the opposite direction. My question is...

What's the right thing to do? Go for the enemy bombers or stick to my assignment?

In game my flight instantly goes for any enemies spotted but i'm not sure it's the right thing to do, leaving my objective unprotected.

Stick to your escort assignment, and vector in friendlies to the area. In most cases....if I were homeward bound from a milk run bombing mission with no enemy interference...then I might have a go at the target of opportunity.

you should stick with your escort those guys need you. Think of all the poor bomber crew guys that can't live without you.

I agree that you should stay with your bombers. Same goes for chasing faster enemy planes that may attack. Its a tactic to lure you away. Once away from the formation they can beat you back and get the bombers. Never stray to far away from the bombers. Regardless of the fact they are armed, they desperately need the escorting fighters. Stay close and chase the attacking planes away each time. Pay attention to tactics employed in the game. A few fighters come in and engage you so the others can come in for the kill is very popular. Bomb runs are a lot of fun if flown correctly. Much more so than furballs. At least everyone has an objective.

...and once you have tasted flight, you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward,
for there you have been and there you long to return.

You should stay with the bombers.
Now, if you(and your wingman or group) aren't the only escorts, for example in the hungarian campaign, you are sent to escort some LW bombers, but they are also, acompanied by some fighters of the LW, you may go and attack them, but be sure you don't get too far from your mission objective.
When I played that campaign, In most of the misions, I had a schwarm of Bf109(3 109+ me) and must of the escorting mision i was flying togheter with german 190's or 109's.
In that situation, I left the LW fightes to stay with the bombers, while I was sweeping ahead.
Most of the time, when the bombers reached the target, there was no fighter oposition(aldough, my engine was sweating, and my fuel tanks were almost empty.
If you are the only escort, stay with them, the can't do anything withouth having you to protect them.

A 'good' landing is one from which you can walk away. A 'great'
landing is one after which they can use the plane again<center>
