Has anyone else looked through the config files and seen references to helicopters?

Where?

AFAIK the few helicopters of that time weren't really useful for ASW.

Americans had navy helicopters... my guess would be they just left them in so they can reuse the engine for the pacific game.

I don't think the Americans had operative helicopters before the end of WW2. The Bell model 30 and Sikorsky R-4/6 remained at an experimental stage, much like many german projects of the time. Actually Sikorsy helicopters may have flown in combat zones during late 1944 but they retained the "Y" designation typical of prototypes

While Japanese developed submarines that could launch float-planes, the German thought that helicopters would have been better suited to the role.

AFAIK they developed only some pocked sized gyrocopters to be carried onboard the larger type IXD/42

There actually were a limited number of German helicopters that flew during WWII. They were used used in a very limited ASW and Naval recon role. This same helicopter was proposed as a one possible way for the German cammandos to rescue Musalini during WWII but the idea was turned down in favor of more conventional methods.
