I just received Dean's book on the 1944 JFC, and
thought this quick summary might be of interest
with regards to combat qualities. The top two
are the F8F and P51 (although given the low
number of responses for the F8F in total, hard
to say which would be rated best of the two).
The P47-D and P-38L seem to be rated
controversially poorly.

just to explain the first figure is the number that rated the combat quality as good.

What were the criteria for these ratings? Just the pilot's opinion, only air to air or also gound attack capabilites?

His book 'America's Hundred-Thousand' is very good.

Is this one up to the same standard, and how much of it is Dean's work as opposed to historical documents?

I have always wanted to get this book.

It seems that they are very harsh on all the planes in the conference.

Also remember that they are comparing 1945 planes like the Bearcat and P47M with earlier models like the Seafire III which is basically a Spitfire V and the P47D.

It would seem common sense than the P47M is going to get most votes over the P47D for example, even tho the P47D is still a good plane

It's pretty much a straight transcript of the meetings.

Do you live in the US Xio? You can borrow my copy.

I think the pilots were being critical for the purpose of identifying problems for future improvements.

No mate, I live in England, I am going to buy it in the future I think, but its pretty expensive I think (about 30=$60)and I dont have the money to spend that much on a book right now.

I will buy it in the future tho.

I haven't delved into the detailed text to determine what the criteria for evaluations were, but it seems to be pilot opinion, so that does make it hard to compare any two planes that have similar scores. Some of the pilot comments are interesting as on some aircraft (e.g. P-63) the controls can be rated as light by one pilot and heavy by another. So it is fairly subjective.

Most of the book is, as noted, meeting transcripts.
